Road House - complete with Mike Nelson commentary; Kevin Smith commentary; and the all-new documentary "Road House: A Tribute to the Worse Movie Ever Created".

I will make the argument that they belong in the Criterion Collection due to the fact that Micheal Bay has a directorial style that is recognizable as his own, just like Kurosawa, Fellini, or Bergman. Bay's style just involves blowing stuff up real good.

Hope springs eternal.
Huh. I've read many good review for The Ice Storm myself. Haven't seen it yet though.
Maybe they'll release something that's impossible to find like Machine Gun McCain or The Important Thing is to Love, or go for something goofy like Attack of the Crab Monsters. I wish that they'd give a few more Hong Kong films their treatment, though that's more difficult with the Weinstein strangehold. I've always hoped that they'd give me the chance to see some sort of rarity like The Passion of Darkly Noon or The Reflecting Skin, but my personal hope has always been for a Criterion disc of Sholay. They could also tackle the superb ghost story, The Uninvited.
My NUMBER ONE hope, however, is that they (or freaking someone) will release a great print of the cult hit Goke, Bodysnatcher from Hell since the German disc is OOP now, and the Janus logo appears before it on TCM. But I somehow doubt it.

Ice Storm is fantastic.
Thin Red Line? I've asked Mulvaney about the film several times, he never denies it and gives evasive answers, I suspect the title is in the pipeline though have no solid info and that's more a hunch than anything.

Lionsgate owns the rights to this in the U.S., so I doubt we'll see it in the near future. There's a R2 from Second Sight with an insightful video essay from Tag Gallagher. Second Sight also released Ophuls' Caught and Reckless Moment, both with commentary tracks.

To go with Last Days of Disco, they need to release a Blu-Ray of my favorite of his movies, Barcelona (with director/actor commentary and some other great features), so they have all the Whit Stillman movies.

Re: What movie will Criterion #500?
If Criterion wants to make a big splash, they'll release a box containing Deep Throat, Behind the Green Door, The Opening of Misty Beethoven, & Debbie Does Dallas...all bonafide cinema classics.
(To increase sales, they could always bundle it with the Beastie Boys set).
In an entirely serious vein, it would be nice to see Criterion take a shot at The Quiet Man, which is only available in atrocious prints.
Or how about The African Queen?

I agree, Barcelona is the one I've been wanting too and I think it's also his best.

From the "unreleased classics" thread, I had forgotten about The Magnificent Ambersons...a fitting 500th selection. "Wuthering Heights" would also be a great choice.
Also would love to see "One-Eyed Jacks", a superbly filmed (and acted, IMHO) film that may never see a really good release with appropriate commentary & features. It's available in crappy prints all over the place (although I did get a fine-looking widescreen print somewhere...still, would be nice to see this get the deluxe treatment. I think it's a very overlooked film with some memorable sequences. I believe it was severely edited; don't know if the excised footage survived & a restored version could be released. Even if it were a "Major Dundee" restoration with as many scenes as possible added, it would be a nice treat if done correctly. Lot of history behind the film with Brando's fights with studio, budget overruns, etc., so I imagine a good backstory feature could be presented.
