Sam Fuller Collection from Sony: 9/29/09

Amazon pre-order

Films included in the set:

- The Crimson Kimono (1959)
- Underworld U.S.A. (1961)
- Scandal Sheet (1952)

Sony looks like they've really stepped up the pace on their catalog stuff this fall, though the price points are a bit high. $79.95 list for three films? There better be commentaries and featurettes on all three, plus a documentary (The Typewriter, the Rifle & the Movie Camera?) to justify that price. Then again, Sony have always been known for having higher prices than the other studios.

Still waiting on Park Row and Verboten.

Re: Sam Fuller Collection from Sony: 9/29/09

Surprised they are including Scandal Sheet as Fuller didn't direct that.

There must be more to the set, as the price is a bit high for just those three films. Although the documentary, that features Quentin Tarantino among others, is even better than the films.

Yeah, Verboten would be a must have for me. I don't know why it is considered such a minor Fuller effort. As such, I'm guessing there will be a lengthy wait for it. I think it's one of his better lesser known films.

Re: Sam Fuller Collection from Sony: 9/29/09

Either that price tag is wrong, or this is like a Benjamin Button deal, but with Sony is releasing this through Criterion. Or Sony knows just how desperately I want Underworld U.S.A. and that I *will* pay that much in the end.

Sirk's Shockproof, penned by Fuller, is Sony owned, but I doubt that would be included. Either way, its good to see these coming, and Scandal Sheet is a sweet surprise.

Yeah, that list price is rediculous, but I'll be hunting for a deal when it arrives anyway.
The documentary is special, something I would show to friends I wanted to turn on to Fuller.
But I'm still jonesing for Run of the Arrow, Park Row and Verboten!

Re: Sam Fuller Collection from Sony: 9/29/09

Their is actually going to be I believe seven films in this box set. I don't know if they are all Fuller directed works or ones he may have worked on in other ways. Gentleman from Sony just emailed me this information when I asked about the high MSRP and the three films listed.

Now that's more like it! Stones, perhaps Shockproof will be included then, along with Power of the Press, Adventure in Sahara and whichever other Columbia-owned titles Fuller wrote the screenplay or story for.

Perhaps The Crimson Kimono, Underworld U.S.A., It Happened in Hollywood, Adventures in Sahara, Power of the Press, Shockproof, and Scandal Sheet? Those are all the Columbia films that Fuller worked on. That would be an amazing set.

SCANDAL SHEET is based on a Sam Fuller novel.

The documentary is better than actual Sam Fuller films?

Give me a break!

Is this a re-title of The Typewriter, the Rifle and the Movie Camera?

That was my initial thought, but, if that is the case, why wouldn't Sony mention Tarantino's involvement as well?

Re: Sam Fuller Collection from Sony: 9/29/09

You may say ugly, but it is much better than their typical fare. I prefer the simplicity of these Collectrs Choice work than their recent Toho box or their dumb Martini movies line

I thought the artwork on the Michael Powell set was very nice.

Re: Sam Fuller Collection from Sony: 9/29/09

This brings Samuel Fuller to somewhere around the 25 film mark for films released on dvd.

Yet how many Nicholas Ray films have been PROPERLY released? 4? maybe 5?

This is an injustice that needs to be fixed.

Re: Sam Fuller Collection from Sony: 9/29/09

I agree with the disparity and Johnny Guitar needs to be released to Blu-Ray by Criterion. I'd be happy if that happens, but we need more Fuller.

There are, to my knowledge 18 of his films released. We still need Run Of The Arrow, The Madonna & The Dragon, Park Row, China Gate, a halfway decent edition of Shark!, Dead Pigeon On Beethoven Street and Thieves After Dark. This discounts the work on TV shows. There is an import of Verboten!, but a R1 is needed of that too. You can't have enough high quality releases of Fuller!
