Is There Really a Market For Canceled Shows?

Well, perhaps the biggest bomb of the 2008-09 tv season has been My Own Worst Enemy with Christian Slater. This show died after just 9 episodes.

Now it is on dvd, billed as the complete series. lol It is in a slim case.

I realize that the networks desperately want to milk some money after losing out from hyping this series, but a show that dies that fast broadcasts suckage to dvd buyers. Plus, the show may end with no real sense of a conclusion.

With so many other great cop shows like The Shield, I can't image why anyone would buy this dvd.

family guy was brought back after being cancelled solely based on dvd sales, so I think every show has some kind of niche market buyer out there that'd be interested in it.

Firefly is one of the best selling TV shows on DVD in the history of the medium. And there are a number of other "one season wonders" that have done very well.

Studios love 1-season canceled shows on DVD. They are usually easy to prep, tend to sell surprisingly well, and the studios don't have to worry about the sale degradation of subsequent seasons.

Every show (and movie) has it's fans. No matter how good or bad, there's a fanbase for everything.

So you can enjoy the show even though it ends on a cliffhanger with no resolution?

I can't speak for MOWE - because I never watched it, but "canceled" doesn't necessarily mean bad, as witnessed by many of the examples already listed.

I'd add Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies to that list, too.

Get A Life was one of my favorite shows in the early 90's and wish they would release all of them. I'd buy it in a second. I'm glad Parker Lewis Can't Lose is finally coming to DVD.

Yes there is.

Studio 60 is my most watched TV show set. Just because something gets cancelled doesn't mean it sucks. It just means they never asked me if I watched it or not.

And you don't have to have a large percentage of the people buy it to sell a lot. With 400 million plus in NA it only takes a couple of percentage points.

Plus, a lot of times the show's creators have a deal in place for a DVD release before the first episode ever even airs.

This is similar to a movie that doesn't do well in theaters but gets a huge reception on DVD, like Shawshank Redemption and Donnie Darko.

Police Squad is one of the greatest comedies ever, and it only lasted 6 episodes. Gained quite a cult following, and fan support/outrage helped lead to the Naked Gun movies being made.

The network and the production company are two different things. The production company gets the DVD revenue. It just so happens that Universal also produced this show.

And on that note, let me voice a vote for Journeyman which DID get to sort of resolve in its final episode... and was also in the same Monday 10pm NBC slot of death.

Also Freaks and Geeks is a prime example of an amazing one season show.

This is the reason I will never own Deadwood. If the network doesn't care enough to wrap up loose ends I won't support it.
OTOH Studio 60 is a favorite.

The Tick
Greg the bunny

Firefly
Harsh Realm
Clerk the animated series

My wife has that one vampire show that was on last year i think it got pulled after a season as well(Moonlight i think).

I also liked Working Stiffs starring James Belushi and Michael Keaton back in 1979. It was cancelled after 9 episodes. It's not available on dvd yet.

I wish there would've been the 4th season, but its still one of my very favorite shows, and I'll happily rewatch the 3 seasons we do have many, many times.
