You're right, it's tough to make a fair comparison. The electronics industry has changed so much in the last ten or twelve years, especially prices.

Sure, a DVD player was $300 in 2000, a VCR was probably $150. Comparativly speaking, the DVD player price at that time was not considered outrageous.

That was one of the problems Blu-ray had for several years. Blu-ray was $300+ and a brand-name comparable DVD player could be had for $40-$50. Add to that, buying an HDTV and the fact Blu-ray doesn't have that added apeal of being seen as "revolutionary" technology the way DVD was over the clunky VHS tape.
