I think we have to count both Wings and Sunrise as the best picture winner for that year. They later changed category names and retroactively put Wings in the category that continued on, with the category for Sunrise only being done that once.

I think most consider Sunrise the better picture, and I see it on many top ten of all-time lists (including my own by the way).

They need to BRING BACK this catigory, and put all of these Obscure Movies they keep giving the Awards to in it, leaving BEST PICTURE for the Blockbusters most of us prefer to see!

But how do you define "best"? Sure, Dark Knight and Iron Man and the like might be more entertaining and sell more, but they aren't "better" done films than the five nominees this year.

The Academy Awards aren't meant to celebrate entertainment or money generation, they are meant to celebrate film making.

edit to add here, so as to keep the thread derail at a minimum:

I'll disagree (slightly, those two films were maybe the 8th and 9th best made films of the year). Let's use the Academy to break our tie. Oh snap!

The ones in bold I've actually seen. I haven't had the chance to finish Amadeus and the second disc of Godfather Part II rotted before I got a chance to see it. Oh well. Will wait for a good deal on the Blu-ray.

More than I thought, actually.
