Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
http://www.criterionforum.org/forum/...php?f=2&t=9359
Someone posted the item about subUrbia (excellent news!), but here's the deal: Tonight, Criterion Collection exec. producer Kim Hendrickson spoke at the Wexner Center in Columbus, OH, as part of a "DVD release party" for Simon of the Desert. Hendrickson confirmed several releases for the coming year (none of which are really surprising, but still cool to hear straight from someone inside CC)... ...Furthermore, she said they’d love to do more Linklater and more Malick since they’ve established relationships with them and their studios, and that Paul Schrader was “fun and easy to work with." New deals have apparently been made with Warner Brothers and Fox. She didn't elaborate on what's being picked up, but when asked if it could include “classics from the 30’s,” she said yes (whatever that means). I'll start by nominating Barfly, Pretty Maids All in a Row, and Cobra for the royal treatment. Well, maybe not Cobra... |
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
I'd love to see them do The Thin Red Line/ Badlands
|
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
I'd like to see them get to some movies that have never been released on DVD first.
|
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
lol at Cobra....
I agree with Barfly.... |
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
But still no Viacomm. Oh well, Good Burger is going to have to wait for the Criterion treatment.
This is actually great news all around. |
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
As far as films that aren't available on DVD in R1 yet, Party Girl would be utterly fabulous, along with The Wind and The Rain People. I believe somewhere in the above-mentioned thread is an official no on The Devils. I'd love to see Greed get the Criterion treatment, since WB seem to have abandoned silents completely. Then again, Criterion's track record in that department is pretty lackluster. Worthy double dips:

Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
I want a Criterion Snow Angels asap.
|
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
Since Aronofsky had been pushing Warner to give The Fountain Criterion treatment, I wouldn't be surprised to see that one pop up.
|
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
The Fountain and The Thin Red Line....god, I want to see as much of the cut footage from TTRL as possible.

Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
Yes, I know that..but someone mentioned that and those 2 are my modern film picks to would be greatly appreciated on Criterion..besides any and all Kurosawa remaining films
|
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
There are a number of older titles that have slipped into the public domain over the years that the big studios still hold the film elements for. Typically, they hate to invest money into these films due to the low budget competition. Perhaps Criterion will make the effort, ala My Man Godfrey.

From page 3 of the Criterion Forum thread:

He also told me that when he met with them to discuss what he would like done for that they asked if he could contribute to their versions of Badlands and Zabriskie Point. Linklater is a good friend of fellow Austin resident Malick (there are collectible Malick posters littering his office). I can also tell you that Linklater informed me that Steven Soderbergh has recorded a commentary track for Zabriskie Point. a friend interviewed Soderbergh for an article on Che and the filmmaker confirmed this with him. As for the Before Sunrise/ Before Sunset is also on the way. I am not sure who is releasing it. I saw proofs by designer Marc English (Austin based graphic artist who did the DVD art for both Dazed and Confused and Slacker). Based on the proofs (though no criterion logo on the set), it would seem that they are also being released by Criterion. I asked if any of his other films would get the CC treatment and he said the after BS/BS and Suburbia, Newton Boys and Tape would be a possibility but that release is still a ways down the road. |
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
I really hope this means some of their silents were licensed out. Criterion apparently licensed The Wedding March from Paramount, so it would be neat to have another Von Stroheim film out - Greed. They'd be able to justify the high price for including both cuts and extras.
But they need to work on films that have not had releases yet before films like Blowup that already have DVDs with commentaries. Come on, Blowup has a commentary, music-only track, A+ remaster, and trailers. How about unreleased stuff like The Crowd or the Valentino film Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? |

Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
As soon as I saw Linklater and Malick mentioned, the first ones that came to mind were Before Sunrise/Sunset, and Badlands. I'd love for Criterion to do SEs of those.
Especially Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, which are, in my opinion, two of the best romantic movies of all time. |

But...it's a snapper! As far as unreleased silents, The Crowd would be ideal, as would Vidor's other 1920's masterpiece, The Big Parade, which MGM owns the rights to.

Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
This is good news.
I saw that they mentioned Paul Schrader. It made me think: who owns the rights to Blue Collar? If that movie were to be released by CC it would make me all sorts of happy. |
Re: Criterion and WB are in cahoots!
Wonder if we'll finally get The Devils this way...
And Zabriskie Point. |
