Someone posted the item about subUrbia (excellent news!), but here's the deal: Tonight, Criterion Collection exec. producer Kim Hendrickson spoke at the Wexner Center in Columbus, OH, as part of a "DVD release party" for Simon of the Desert. Hendrickson confirmed several releases for the coming year (none of which are really surprising, but still cool to hear straight from someone inside CC)... ...Furthermore, she said they’d love to do more Linklater and more Malick since they’ve established relationships with them and their studios, and that Paul Schrader was “fun and easy to work with." New deals have apparently been made with Warner Brothers and Fox. She didn't elaborate on what's being picked up, but when asked if it could include “classics from the 30’s,” she said yes (whatever that means). I'll start by nominating Barfly, Pretty Maids All in a Row, and Cobra for the royal treatment. Well, maybe not Cobra... |

As far as films that aren't available on DVD in R1 yet, Party Girl would be utterly fabulous, along with The Wind and The Rain People. I believe somewhere in the above-mentioned thread is an official no on The Devils. I'd love to see Greed get the Criterion treatment, since WB seem to have abandoned silents completely. Then again, Criterion's track record in that department is pretty lackluster. Worthy double dips:

Since Aronofsky had been pushing Warner to give The Fountain Criterion treatment, I wouldn't be surprised to see that one pop up.

Yes, I know that..but someone mentioned that and those 2 are my modern film picks to would be greatly appreciated on Criterion..besides any and all Kurosawa remaining films

There are a number of older titles that have slipped into the public domain over the years that the big studios still hold the film elements for. Typically, they hate to invest money into these films due to the low budget competition. Perhaps Criterion will make the effort, ala My Man Godfrey.

I really hope this means some of their silents were licensed out. Criterion apparently licensed The Wedding March from Paramount, so it would be neat to have another Von Stroheim film out - Greed. They'd be able to justify the high price for including both cuts and extras.
But they need to work on films that have not had releases yet before films like Blowup that already have DVDs with commentaries. Come on, Blowup has a commentary, music-only track, A+ remaster, and trailers. How about unreleased stuff like The Crowd or the Valentino film Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? |

As soon as I saw Linklater and Malick mentioned, the first ones that came to mind were Before Sunrise/Sunset, and Badlands. I'd love for Criterion to do SEs of those.
Especially Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, which are, in my opinion, two of the best romantic movies of all time. |

This is good news.
I saw that they mentioned Paul Schrader. It made me think: who owns the rights to Blue Collar? If that movie were to be released by CC it would make me all sorts of happy. |
