Episode VII?

I think anything from John Hughes. He was arguably the most successful, influential filmmaker of the decade.

To me, the 80's means John Hughes (or John-Hughes-type) comedies, slasher horror, and the rise of the hokey action movie (Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Seagal, Norris).

Top Gun is the first true Bruckheimer film that defined his style through the 90s and into Bad Boys II.

But, at heart, it is still an 80's film.

Savage Steve Holland is memorable with his John Cusack movies: One Crazy Summer and Better off Dead. Cusack also was in Hughes's Sixteen Candles.
