Walking thru Ken Cranes LD store with an arm full of LDs and walked up to two TVs. One playing the a DVD and the other playing a LD. The movie was "Mars Attacks." I remember turning to another customer and saying, "It'll never catch on, it's only a couple of clicks up in clearity!!!"

"Mars Attacks and Contact", both released in early 1997. These I'm eagerly awaiting on BD!!!

Magnolia. I picked it out at Borders because I loved it so much in theaters, and didn't own any version at that point. I also really liked the packaging.

Yup. I was a store manager with Suncoast at the time. If I recall, there were 21 titles on launch day, all WB/New Line/HBO. Most were catalog titles - Blade Runner, Seven, etc... Twister was the one big current title.

Starship Troopers purchased 5/19/1998 at Best Buy for 24.99 + tax
Bought before getting a player - laserdisc was primary at the time

My Other Self 12-31-08 06:06 AM

The Ghostbusters/Ghostbusters 2 Double Feature in April 2000 at Media Play. $49.99+ tax at the time. Just got my player the day before.

Gimme Shelter - the title that inspired me to buy a DVD player.

Star Wars Guy 12-31-08 06:42 AM

The first one I bought was Caddyshack. I bought it about a week before I even owned a DVD player. It was a way to get the ok from the Mrs. to buy the Sony I had my eye on.

Jumanji

12/23/98 Bought original releases of Tomorrow Never Dies and Mask Of Zorro. On 12/26 went to Best buy with gift cards I received and picked up the old snapcase versions of Goldeneye, Goldfinger and From Russia With Love.

Dmacsg1 12-31-08 06:56 AM

I don't remember which one was bought first but I do remember all of these were bought in the space of a couple of weeks:

Men In Black (Black case edition)
Independance Day
Terminator 2
Stargate
Stargate SG1 Vol 1

These were purchased before my first dvd player. It has been so long I can't remember the year!!

Take care all!!

Tomorrow Never Dies SE (silver label edition). I bought it before I had a DVD player because I heard it was only going to be available for a short time. Next three titles were the first three single disc volumes of South Park. I've sold off the SP discs, but still have TND.

Over 8 years ago or something like that, I bought a new Sumsung player and The Negotiator. I still have that DVD (but not the player).

joltman 12-31-08 07:17 AM

Pretty sure it was Mallrats, and it was before I even had a DVD player, though I think I did have a DVD-ROM in my computer.

Brian Shannon 12-31-08 07:27 AM

Blade Runner

Jnuke 12-31-08 08:25 AM

A week or two before I bought my player, I picked up used copies of Deep Blue Sea, The 13th Warrior, and The World Is Not Enough.

macnorton 12-31-08 08:49 AM

I don't recall if it was O Brother Where Art Thou? or Stripes (the old flipper disc)...I know I bought both before I went off to school and they were both at Costco.

meshershark 12-31-08 10:13 AM

The Matrix

I bought it from a friend who decided he'd rather have the FS. That then prompted me to buy my first DVD player.

chrisbluedevil 12-31-08 10:41 AM

The Green Mile and The Matrix back in 00...got them used at Blockbuster for 9.99 each....I still have them..i've since replaced the packaging from snapper to keep cases thanks to my company's really great laser color printers....

bought them the same day i bought an RCA open boxed dvd from Circuit City for 168...(my memory astounds me).....it turned out to be a total dud and returned it and bought a 99.00 (which was crazy cheap in 00) Orpheon (do they even still exist)....and i've been a dvd kid ever since.....

on a side note....

Im sure you've all seen site displaying old tvs and vcrs and record player for nostalgia's sake....we need one for old dvd players...
