Navarre shuts down BCI Eclipse

Another one bite the dust. Loved their animation titles (He-Man, Dungeons and Dragons), Drive-In Classics, Naschy. Guess the Shaw Bros films are cancelled. I wonder if this will affect Code Red? This sucks.

No!!!!!

riotinmyskull 12-18-08 12:15 PM

fuck.

Quatermass 12-18-08 12:40 PM

As part of this decision, Navarre will be reducing its workforce and writing down assets. Going forward, BCI’s exclusively distributed disc business will be folded into the corporation’s distribution unit. Its BCI brand is not expected to be stamped on future releases
It doesn't sound like they are going out of business completely just yet. They seem to just be consolidating.

Disc-Flipper 12-18-08 03:29 PM

That's sad news indeed. I have a lot of their releases. They were awesome and offered stuff nobody else would think of releasing.

SPRBD 12-18-08 03:33 PM

So, what's the impact on pre-orders like February's "Crazy Lips / Gore From Outer Space"?

JJE-187 12-18-08 03:46 PM

They way I read it is that they are just getting rid of the BCI name, the releases will go on under another name kinda like Artisan did when Lionsgate bought them out

That's what I was trying to say above. The fact that they mentioned "future releases" in the bit I quoted bodes well.

zombeaner 12-18-08 08:42 PM

Didn't BCI recently pick up a bunch of Asian titles as well?

God I hope so.

Albert71292 12-18-08 11:28 PM

I just bought the first BCI set in my massive collection of DVDs just last week... the "Celebrity Family Feud" collection. Was hoping to see more game show collections... need to get the "Match Game" and "Price is Right" collections soon!

tonymontana313 12-19-08 03:18 AM

This is really sad news since I loved all the work they did with the He-Man property.

starman9000 12-19-08 08:01 AM

Dang, I love BCI. They do things right. Who else would put that much care into shows like Prince Valiant?

dx23 12-22-08 12:36 PM

Should we expect all their releases to go OOP? If so, I'll have to pick up the remaining He-Man sets to complete my collection.

visitor Q 12-23-08 06:49 PM

I really hope the consolidating theory is the one that flies on Navarre/BCI's next chapter. I've loved the treatment they've done for the old Sonny Chiba films ..and the cost! When Adness had control they were going for $10-20 a piece. When Navarre took over I could get 3-4 films for that price range of the same quality.

There's quite a few more that I'd like to see. Street Fighter if anyone is listening!!!!

visitor Q 12-23-08 10:40 PM

Here's an interesting (excellent blog site) blog posting on the matter .... http://outcastcinema.blogspot.com/20...i-eclipse.html

LorenzoL 12-24-08 02:19 AM

I was looking forward to their Shaw releases and the Golden Harvest acquisitions. Now it seems that we are never going to see a proper release in R1.

Matthew Ackerly 12-24-08 10:44 AM

I wonder how this will affect Navare's Code Red distribution.

Brian T 12-24-08 12:29 PM

In regards to the Shaw titles, this is just one more (inevitable, really) reason to grab such titles when they're released in their original territory, and get a region-free player to boot (they're not that hard to find folks). Here we are in 2008 lamenting the potential unavailability of, what, maybe 20 titles, when around 700 have been released in perfectly acceptable versions since 2003+/- in Hong Kong and other parts of Asia, and often for less money. If the films are the thing, and they very well should be, then truly interested souls shouldn't have been waiting around for these U.S. companies to risk losing money on them to release them to you in dribs and drabs, noble though the effort might have been. There's SO much you'll miss that way. :(

I feel worse for the loss of the "domestic" fare BCI released (grindhouse et. al.), even though I rarely missed grabbing anything to date . The foreign acquisitions are largely still available in other markets, and if you really wanna see what you've been missing, instead of waiting who-knows-how-many more years to see them in Region 1, I'd strongly suggest shopping outside borders. Or at least visiting your nearest big-city Chinatown if you have access to one . . . ;)

Code Red is a distribution deal and not reliant on the (now laid off) BCI acquisitions, product development or art teams. It sounds like Navarre is going to keep that deal alive for now.

Don't Forget "The Best of Password" with Host Allen Ludden.
And a Great mix of Movie/TV Stars.
:)

JerryKILL 12-26-08 11:25 PM

I completed my Rarescope collection, just in case, while they are available. I can't imagine there is much of an audience for those films, but I love em. All of the Rarescope titles are listed as "BCI Eclipse" in the studio tag at the Navarre site.

Here in Canada, they were selling all volumes of the He-Man and She-Ra sets for $9.99 at Future Shop.

You will be seeing a lot more shutdowns in the future as the goldenage of dvd sales are over as mainstream starts to switch to downloadinng thier movies as the main way to watch movies. Fios age is dawning upon us. give or take it 5 years.

Re: Navarre shuts down BCI Eclipse

Anyone know if BCI Eclipse's 20 films Exploitation Cinema Collection is a new release? Can't seem to find any information on it.

20 films (some of which are on the "Drive-In's" Collections) on 10 discs, with artwork matching their current line of Double-Feature discs. Saw it at Best Buy tonight and it came packaged in two Multi-Disc cases, housed in a slipcase.

Re: Navarre shuts down BCI Eclipse

The Exploitation Cinema Collection was a Best Buy exclusive that came out around Christmas. Drive In Classics 4 is out this week too.

See rareoopdvds web site for more info on Exploitation Cinema Collection.

Thanks for the info.

I still have to pick up Vol. 1-3 of the "Drive-In Classics"

Not really. People like having tangible stuff in their hands, such as DVDs and BDs. Downloading may take some consumers away from the DVD market but they aren't going to have a huge impact in the near futre. Remember that most people prefer losing one DVD instead a of a hard drive full of films. BCI is just another casualty of the sad economic state we are all in.

You won't have to worry about losing a hard drive full of films because they'll either be streamed or just expire after a few days :)

Thanks to elsanto for giving me the heads up on the "Exploitation Cinema Collection". Picked up the last (maybe their only one) copy at my local Best Buy.

Have to order Drive-In Classics Vol. 4 soon, as I just picked up Vol. 1-3.

EDIT: Wow, I didn't realize the set I bought contained all of the "Welcome To The Grindhouse" Double Features BCI originally released (prior to changing the moniker to "Exploitation Cinema"). Great deal :)

NoirFan 01-11-09 09:07 PM

Re: Navarre shuts down BCI Eclipse

I ordered BCI's disc of Kurosawa's Quiet Duel from DVD Planet, and it's currently listed as out of stock. Hopefully it's not going to go out of print just yet.

Seriously, do I need to stock up on titles I put off on buying here? Are they going to go out of print?

I would like to know about the OOP status too. I wanna get the rest of there Grindhouse/Explotation double features and Savage Streets if they are going OOP soon

Wow. That is a cool deal. I've bought them all individually. How are they packaged in this set? Are they in their 10 original keepcases? Slimcases? One big custom case?

They come packaged in 2 custom cases that hold 5 DVD's a piece. Problem is a durability, as both of my cases came with shattered spindles. Luckily for me one of them is fine, the other will not hold a 5th disc :(

SPRBD 01-12-09 02:53 AM

Re: Navarre shuts down BCI Eclipse

Hmmm. I guess I don't regret buying the individual releases then. And I got 9 of them for less then $4 each.

Big question: will the 2 scheduled for 1/27 still come out? The Galaxina release is probably a lost cause.

I hope Navarre stick with their shaw titles. I already picked up opium and the kung - fu master on BD. Looking to get Life Gamble when released o the 27th of this month. I hope that more shaw titles follow from the celestial remasters on blu.

Re: Navarre shuts down BCI Eclipse

For those He-Man fans, Best Buy has a new exclusive box set of the 2002 series. It contains all 3 volumes, as well as a exclusive forth volume that contains some new artwork cards, and a Skeletor key chain. Its a nice set, but it has its own spine with He-man on it, and does not connect with the mural. I picked it up, and I can provide some pics if anyone wants to see.

Not to derail here, but can you list the films...I wanted to get these, but I think I have them all already.
