would you rather: bonus digital copy or bonus Blu/DVD?

I ask this because I know a lot of movies are coming out with bonus "digital copy" editions of movies. Me? I still have a DVD player and while I'd like to upgrade to Blu, it won't be anytime soon. Two examples that I think work perfectly for me are Sleeping Beauty's BluRay and the new Halloween 30th Anniversary collection which contains a Blu copy of the original movie (which frankly is the only one besides 2 I'd want on the format). Instead of lame "digital copies", the Sleeping Beauty Blu contains a bonus DVD edition and Halloween has a Blu copy of the original movie with the DVD's. I think this is the type of "special edition" I'd rather buy. As someone who doesn't have BluRay, I can still watch and enjoy the movies I have now but have something in my collection that is already upgraded once I make the upgrade.

Would you rather get digital copies or bonus formats of the movie which makes it easier for people who may not yet use both formats and give them something that in a year, they won't need to "upgrade"?

I don't want either one. Both are useless to me. If I HAD to have one, I'd take the DVD.

Giles 12-01-08 01:56 PM

bonus DVD as well.

kstublen 12-01-08 02:02 PM

The obvious answer is a Bonus DVD or Blu-ray Disc, even though it isn't really necessary if you are already purchasing a copy of the movie on DVD or Blu-ray. But in any case, you would likely get more use out of a Bonus DVD or Blu-ray Disc which could be used repeatedly or given away to someone else who could use it repeatedly, than a one-time use, waste of disc space digital copy.

The digital copy is useless to me.

The Bonus DVD would have benefitted me before I got a Blu-ray player, but not so much now. In fact, prior to going Blu, I was hoping this would take off.

The only time I could see a Bonus DVD being useful to me now would be for a movie that my kids would watch on a portable player or on the bedroom TV.

the reason I am for the bonus DVD is because there are a lot of people who still haven't upgraded to BluRay yet, but would like to eventually, but don't want to buy movies I can't watch just yet. With Sleeping Beauty and Halloween, I know those are two movies I don't need to "upgrade" in a year or two when I finally switch formats. There are a lot of movies that have "digital copies" that are pointless and I'd rather just see have a bonus DVD so I can go ahead and buy the BluRay edition and watch the DVD of it now.

They should seriously consider more "dual format" titles because while a lot of people here have made the switch, I think the majority is still waiting for the cost of a BluRay player to come down more (I mean, if you can get a DVD player for under $50, whose to say in three years the same won't happen with Blu?) and a bonus DVD would get more people to invest in the potential of eventually buying BluRay than a stupid digital copy.

I have no use for a Digital Copy. I have too much music on my Ipod, I have to delete shit just add new albums. No room for 700 mb of some crappy movie I shouldn't have bought but did anyway because I shouldn't have a Credit Card..

smashthesymbols 12-01-08 02:37 PM

I actually like the idea of including a DVD version of the movie with the BD, assuming it doesn't raise the price. There are actually scenarios where I could see that being useful with DVD players still being the norm most places (your bedroom, kids room/portable, other people's homes, etc). Digital copies are just completely useless to me. I don't see how anyone could ever watch a movie on an ipod.

slop101 12-01-08 02:37 PM

Every digital copy I have goes in the wastebasket.

Give me a bonus dvd like the Sleeping Beauty blu-ray does!

Maxflier 12-01-08 02:38 PM

As awil1026 said, both are equally useless. But if I had to pick which one to have forced on me I guess I would take the DVD.

darkside 12-01-08 02:43 PM

Now that I have an iPod Touch I'm using the digital copies. The best deal was the one I got at Sam's. I bought Forbidden Kingdom for $20.88 and got the DVD version and a digital copy on the BD. Pretty much covers all my options.

I prefer the digital copies since I may actual use them. I doubt I would need a DVD copy.

Nth Power 12-01-08 05:04 PM

I wouldn't want either, but I'd take the extra DVD if I had to choose one. At least there's no expiration date on watching a DVD.

nodeerforamonth 12-01-08 09:24 PM

bonus DVD. I certainly wouldn't watch a digial copy of a movie that I just watched on my 42" LCD television!

DeanoBKN 12-01-08 09:50 PM

I never have used a Digital Copy before, and I never will. Give me a bonus disc.

gotrice487 12-01-08 10:12 PM

I would easily take the bonus Blu/DVD any day over those blasted digital copies

Michael Corvin 12-01-08 10:31 PM

Bonus DVD. Some of us don't have the luxury of having a BD player in every room, car and/or portable. A bonus DVD is a nice extra that is actually useful.

12cm 12-01-08 10:31 PM

I'd prefer the DVD version as well, but since I don't watch a lot of movies, having it on Blu-ray is sufficient. I typically get rid of my DVD movies once they're released on Blu-ray as long as all the bonus material is ported over.

I'm with the guy who says he throws away those damn Digital Copy discs... I've only bought one DVD that had one so far (Blue Harvest, which I think is the title where Fox started all this mess), and it went into the trash with the shrinkwrap. I do see the usefulness of a DVD copy because Blu-ray isn't common enough to be in the bedroom, mini-van, etc. but DVDs are getting so cheap lately that you could really buy both, at least for catalog titles.

godzilla rules 12-02-08 12:58 AM

i think that blu-rays should come with a dvd version of the movie because not everyone has a blu-ray player in every room. I know that sometimes my wife will be watching a movie on my blu-ray player and if I want to watch a movie that I have only on blu-ray it would be nice to have a dvd copy of the movie so I could go into another room and watch the movie. digital copies are worthless to me.

Drexl 12-02-08 01:40 AM

Obviously people are going to answer a bonus DVD, but it probably won't happen on a widespread basis. For one thing, they don't want people selling or giving away the extra disc to someone who might otherwise buy a copy, and second, they're trying to encourage people not to rip DVDs. Yes, I know it's very easy, but technically we're not supposed to do it.

Personally, I don't want either, but as long as the price doesn't go up, I'm cool with them including it.

Anyway, I don't think they'll keep including DC discs for too much longer. Right now, it's in the introductory phase. They include the disc to make it easier to try out and get people interested. Eventually, they'll switch to codes only.

Digital copies suck.

JPeeples 12-02-08 04:43 AM

Bonus DVD - I see no real point in using digital copy given how many devices actually play DVDs now.

Alan Smithee 12-02-08 05:03 AM

I want an analog copy.

matome 12-02-08 10:28 AM

Bonus DVD so I can play it on a portable or car DVD player. Digital Copies are useless to me.

I agree that the bonus DVD in SB was a great plan, hope Disney and others continue it.

But the trash? Offer them to us here, I'm sure you would get takers.

celmendo 12-02-08 03:11 PM

Bonus DVD!
