Where did you read about V3 discs? I have the V2 discs but I didn't realize they had "minor flaws."
Also, where did you buy the new discs? I hear Best Buy has exclusive film cells. As for the "film cells", it's actually spelled "cel" (nothing personal, I just had to point that out), and although they're often called that, they aren't actually "cels", they're film frames mounted in a piece of cardboard, for lack of a better description. I haven't seen the ones for the BTTF films, but I have had similar items from STAR WARS Episode I and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. A true cel is larger than a standard sheet of paper, and it's either painted or a lithographic reproduction. Those are just for animation, so what collectors call a "film cel" is just a mounted frame of film, usually from a 35mm (or sometimes 70mm) print, often a recently-printed or defective one that has been specifically cut up into individual frames. Depending on how many "film cels" are to be made, they don't even need to make a complete print of the film, since every second of film will yield 24 frames to be mounted on cardboard and distributed. To be fair, the material that actual animation "cels" are painted on is a similar celluloid material to film stock, so I guess "film cel" isn't completely wrong, just a little misleading. Anyway, I didn't make it to BEST BUY in time Monday night, and I'm not even sure if my local store had them early. I decided to go to Walmart after midnight, and the first one I went to (a Supercenter, but apparently not big enough to get the DVDs) didn't have them. I finally got them at the next Walmart I went to, and I noticed they only got ONE copy of BTTF2. I'd like to see pictures of the mounted film frames BEST BUY was supposedly giving out, but whoever promised photos the other day hasn't delivered on that yet. |

I don't remember exactly where I read this, but I definitely recall reading on some website that not all corrected BTTF3 discs had "V2" on them. Not sure about the "V3" part, but looking at the creation dates, it seems that the III disc may have been done again. I say that because the errors in II and III were discovered at the same time, and the replacement discs were sent out together. That leads me to believe that there could be "V2" discs of BTTF3 with a creation date much closer to the one for BTTF2, not two weeks later like the one I have. I guess it's possible that they corrected II first and then III two weeks later, but having to redo III again not only explains the two-week difference, but the fact that there are V2 and non-V2 discs of III that are both corrected. You'd have to do some Google searching to get the whole story on this... that's what I did, although I admit I may not be remembering everything correctly.

All the slipcovers were pretty mangled so I didn't buy it. I'll try a different Best Buy tomorrow. |

They're the same DVDs. All three movie discs are identical. The only new content is the second disc of Back to the Future 1.

Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
i did in store pickup and got the film cel with part 1 but not 2&3--would i still be able to take the open dvds back and trade them for ones that have the film cels?
|
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Possibly, I don't see a problem with that.
|
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Do they still have the film cells? I was going to hold off on getting these, but now that I know they have something like that I am really interested in picking them up. Do they come individually, like the lithographs and you get them free or are they attached to the package themselves?
EDIT: Abe, do they have them still at Dadeland or Tropicana is probably the more pertinent question? |
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
my BTTF part 1 had the film cel inside the packaging so i'm assuming 2 & 3 do as well--i just wasn't aware 2 & 3 came with cels until seeing Abe.'s post

Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Thanks for the info guys, I guess I'll just rent the bonus disk from Netflix.
|
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
That sucks I didn't get a film cell!
|
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
why doesn't BttF 1 have ""To Be Continued..." end title card on the DVD?
|
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Because "To Be Continued..." wasn't on the original theatrical release; it was added by Universal for the VHS release to raise interest in the forthcoming sequels.

Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Picked up the new 2-disc Part 1 at Walmart tonight for $13. Yes, I already own the previous trilogy box set, but the expansive 9-part documentary and the BTTF The Ride featurette had me way too intrigued to pass on it.
Yeah, I know this will probably drop in price to under $10 in 6 months or so, but I love the 1st film and $13 seems worth it to me. |
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Abe, thanks for the pics... no need to apologize for the delay, it just means you actually have a life outside this forum. ;)
ABCs, I seriously doubt Netflix even offers the bonus disc, nor would any brick-and-mortar video stores. The movies have been available for several years... rental business rarely (if ever) waste money on redundant releases solely on the basis of extra bonus material. Oh, and can a moderator think about getting him to change his screen name??? I don't visit often enough to care, but it's a bit tasteless (pardon the pun). I'm sure some female members might take offense. Scott, you can see the "To Be Continued" title card on the TV version of the final scene, which is played during the "BTTF Night" footage. |

Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
I was a little underwhelmed by the doc, but for ten bucks it's still nice. I think I'm going to skip out on the other two though and hold out for a BD release (hopefully with Looking Back at the Future presented in its entirety.

Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
I bought the two disc edition of Back to the Future at Target today. I did not get the other two films as the features are the same as the ones in my trilogy box set. I have not watched any of the features yet, but I will get around to doing so eventually.

Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Where were these $10? They were $14.99 at Best Buy.
|
Re: Back to the Future Special Edition ---> 2/10/09
Finally got to Best Buy today, and amazingly, with very few copies left with the film cells, I was able to find good ones of all three. I'm surprised there was no mention of the re-releases in the ad this week, especially given that they were offering these exclusives. But maybe that's why a few were still available.
