2 Versions of Tropic Thunder
 

Okay so there are two versions of the upcoming Tropic Thunder. I have not seen it in theatre's and I really want to see it. So for those who have seen it what version is better the Theatrical or the Unrated Directors Cut. Is both versions on the 2-Disc Version or not. What scenes are different and do you lose much original footage?

I got it free from Columbia House so I went with the 2 disc since it's 13 minutes longer + all the bonus features.

how would most know since either dvd isn't released yet?

Some people do get early releases like a store in my town thats why I want to know because I plan on buying it as soon as possible

I've had the DC a week already... both versions are not on the disc. I don't think there's any footage lost from the theatrical version, only added footage.

thats what i thought as well, since there is lots of added footage. unfortunately one of favorite scenes from the theatrical version, where stiller and one of his capturers are spitting at each other is missing from the directors cut. thats however the only missing scene i noticed.

why would they leave out a scene?

ok my bad... been a while since I saw the theatrical cut, I couldn't recollect anything missing... the DC is a bit too long though, loses comedic momentum

This is pretty annoying, and if studios are disconcerted at low theatrical attendance they have no one but themselves to blame. I forked over the 12 bucks to see the film in the theatre and am now being told by the studio that I didn't see the "real" version of the movie, which of course, never played in theatres.

It's even more pernicious when they release the PG version in the theatres (notably the last Die Hard) and the R "director's" version only on DVD. Why bother seeing a film when it comes out if it's a censored version?

Well, it is subjective. But if what plays in the theatre is a watered down product and the director's cut is only available on DVD, they're seriously discouraging people from attending the film during its run.

This is especially so in the PG-13/R releases, where R is a viable rating for a theatrical run but the studios are increasingly taking an R film, cutting it to PG for theatrical release, and only releasing the original on DVD. Live Free or Die Hard is an R-rated film, trimmed and with profanity dubbed over for the theatrical presentation as if it was a TV or airline version. They're practically begging anyone over 14 not to bother going to the theatre anymore.

Typically you do not know what is coming on the DVD release when a film is released to theaters.

And like you say it's subjective. What if the "watered down product" as you call it is better? :shrug:

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've been looking to buy a blu ray copy of this movie for a friend. The problem is I can't seem to find the original theatrical version from 2008, only the director's cut that came out last year. Anyone know where I might be able to find it? Doesn't have to be new.

The DC is the only way to have bought the film on Blu-ray, and its been that way since 2008. You must be referring to WB's new SKU, since they took over distributing Paramount's catalog. It's the exact same disc, though.

Thanks for the info. I was looking on amazon and I came across this review:

However, as much as I gotta say the movie rocks, I have to say: BUY THE THEATRICAL CUT INSTEAD. The unrated version slows the movie down a bit, and most of the added stuff doesn't seem to fit in. They changed some funny lines, and even took some out as well. In fact some of the added stuff makes the movie feel a lot longer than it really is, and after awhile the movie seems repetitive, which is one of the few things that killed the movie for me.

After reading that I started looking unsuccessfully for the theatrical cut...which apparently doesn't exist. lol

They should put both cuts on the same Blu-Ray like they did with "40-Year-Old Virgin."
I prefer the theatrical version of that one to the Unrated version also.
