The Stewardesses 3D: 40th Anniversary Edition--> 1/27/09

From DVD Drive-In:
On January 27, Shout! Factory will release THE STEWARDESSES 3D: 40TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION. It’s 1969 and the skies have never been friendlier. Experience a day in the life of a group of swinging stewardesses where anything goes. After THE STEWARDESSES opened in San Francisco in the summer of ’69, it ignited screens across the country, building a buzz that the Hollywood majors would die for. During the film’s run into the early ’70s, new scenes would be filmed and added to bring more story and “action” to the feature. This 2-DVD set presents the full, UNCUT film in the original 3D color and black-and-white restored editions as well as a color 2D version. So put your tray table down, make sure your seat is in the reclined, relaxed position and enjoy the trip. Bonus Features: * Three mini-documentaries about the film, * Movie stills, ads, trailers and more, * Includes 2 pairs of collectible 3D glasses. The set will retail for $19.98.

I'm glad to see this finally getting released, but it is too bad the 3-D is only red/cyan anaglyphic conversions. (I mean, the movie was released in field sequential on VHS almost 20 years ago!)

I was able to see the digital restoration shown in polarized, clear glasses format at the 2006 World 3-D Expo, Christina Hart was there and didn't seem too ashamed to take a bow.

That DOES suck- they even put in a black and white 3-D version for those who don't like the color screwed up??? Come on people, PLEASE stop putting out DVDs that use this inferior 3-D format! They demoed a new system at CES this month with polarized glasses, so let's wait for THAT to come out before putting out any more 3-D movies- if you do, I'll buy them all!

I have the field-sequential tape and have watched it thousands of times over the years. It appears to be cropped at the top though, was this just bad camerawork or is the framing on the new disc better? There's lots of scenes with people talking and their heads are cut off.

Will there be an extra of Count Floyd introducing the feature?

Sorry, looks like they took down the clip of Count Floyd's Monster Chiller Horror Theater.

Yes, the SCTV sketch "Dr. Tongue's House of Stewardesses" is an extra on the DVD.

As for the cropping, while I haven't seen any previous version of the film, there is another extra that says they went back to the original negative for this version.

When it was in wide release, in order to fit the soundtrack onto the film, it was released in Cinemascope (which could have cropped it) and then the special lens they used for the film made it 3-D. Some of those other transfers could be from that Cinemascope print.
