Most Underrated/Unknown TV on DVD
 

Sometimes while surfing Amazon, I come across a show I didnt even know about and take a gamble on it. Sometimes this has paid off, and sometimes it hasn't. Most of the shows I like tend to be dark humor, sitcoms and shows with tight writing, and I typically like 80s and pre 80s shows (and I love one-liners that are memorable, like Sophia Petrillo's from the Golden Girls)

With that in mind, could someone recommend their favorite underrated/unknown TV on DVD that deserves a wider audience? This would be a great help especially considering all the sales goin on at various vendors

Slings and Arrows, although admittedly not to to everyone's tastes

Sounds like you need to check out Wonderfalls.

Twitch City is amazing. Really twisted, hilarious dark sitcom from Canada. It's a bit like the show "Spaced' sort of.... Spaced incidentially is also a great TV on DVD show.

Nowhere Man (1995)

Bruce Greenwood stars as documentary photographer Thomas Veil who, in the course of one evening, seemingly has his whole existence erased, in the compelling one-hour drama Nowhere Man. It appears as if some mysterious and powerful entity has coerced Veil's family and friends into cooperating in a clandestine plan to annul every trace of him. Veil is all alone with no option but to begin a desperate, dangerous quest to find out how and why this has happened and most importantly, who is behind this torturous scheme

You might try "Miracles" which I picked up at Dollar General store a couple of years ago for $10. It was similar to Millennium. I watched it when it originally aired in 2003, but I think only about 8 of the 13 episodes were ever shown and there's not a finale to wrap everything up. If you can find it for 10 bucks, though, it's well worth it.

I second Wonderfalls and Spaced.

Also Lucky Louie, Dead Like Me, Kitchen Confidential, and (a huge guilty pleasure of mine) Fastlane.

Spaced definitely, and Sports Night. Just picked up the Sports Night 10 year dvd set.

I almost said Sports Night, but it's like a mainstream hit to the folks on these boards. Of course, we are talking to a new member who wouldn't know that, so I guess Freaks & Geeks, Undeclared & maybe Veronica Mars would fall under the same category despite being huge among the DVDtalkers. :shrug:

A great 80's sitcom with dark humor, try BUFFALO BILL. Dabney Coleman as an obnoxious TV host with Joanna Cassidy, Geena Davis, Max Wright.

I recently picked up the complete Jeeves & Wooster. Not certain how much you enjoy British humour, but if that's your kind of thing I've really been enjoying it.

Well, considering I ABHOR Veronica Mars but love bizarre stuff like GreenAcres and Little Britain, some of the recommendations so far do work for me.

However I am frequently stunned by the wealth of American '50s sitcoms available on DVD.

For example today I saw a show on dvd at amazon called Mr. Peepers, a US 50s sitcom about the mellow and funny life of a mild-mannered high school science teacher who has an idyllic view of the world. Has anyone even heard of this?I've blindly ordered it.

Also, something about The Donna Reed Show sounds really fascinating! Can someone who has the set tell me about it?

Well I don't have the first season set since I didn't know it was out, but I just ordered it.

There are 37 episodes in the first season. The show stars Donna Reed (of course), Shelley Fabares, Carl Betz, and Paul Peterson. Guest stars in various episodes in the first season include Buster Keaton, Richard Deacon, Hans Conreid, Howard McNear, George Hamilton, Jesse White, Ted Knight, and James Darren. If none of those names are familiar to you, then The Donna Reed Show is probably not your cup of tea.

I'll have to add Kitchen Confidential

Only 4 of the 13 filmed episodes were broadcast. The series definitely picked up after the first couple episodes. One my favorites

Britain's The Royale Family. A sitcom that takes place almost entirely in the living room of a working class family as they watch TV and talk. Hilarious, fascinating and heart-warming.

Oh, and if you like dark, then I recommend another British series, The League of Gentlemen.
