Great thread, lots of things that I would second.

As for some things that haven't been mentioned yet; Police Squad was a hilarious short lived sitcom. Imagine the Naked Gun movies but with only the good stuff.

And The Venture Brothers is my favorite show ever, after Arrested Development.

Bravo! I just re-watched some of this very disc today, and once again longed for the complete series.

These are all BBC series which any BBC-ophile will know well, but if you are not familiar with them you will not be disappointed with any of the following:

Peep Show - only series 1 released in the US to date
BlackAdder - Complete Series
Black Books - Complete Series
Coupling - Complete Series
Extras - Complete Series
Father Ted - Complete Series
Fawlty Towers - Complete Series
Men Behaving Badly - Complete Series
The Office - Complete Series
Spaced - Complete Series
The Young Ones - Complete Series

I agree on the BBC stuff. My favs that some may not know are BlackAdder, Coupling, Father Ted, Fawlty Towers, Are You Being Served?, Men Behaving Badly, Red Dwarf and Allo Allo.

I know it's on Showtime, but it doesn't get nearly the press that Dexter, Weeds, and Californication get...

Made me appreciate Ewan McGregor on a whole new level. He is the man!

I second The Royle Family, thats one of my all time favorite shows.

Tscott 11-13-08 08:07 PM

I'll concur with Twitch City. I took a chance on it and it's funny and twisted. I found it on Amazon after ordering some other Canadian shows, Corner Gas (very funny sit-com) and Robson Arms (interesting anthology dramedy about various people who live in an apartment complex). All of which I'd recommend, although, I'll warn that Robson Arms episodes can vary greatly in focus and tone.

I'll nominate the BBC production of the House Of Cards trilogy, which traces the career of reptilian Prime Minister Francis Urquhart. Great performances and dark, dark humor...I imagine this is the sort of series Boris Karloff would've made if he'd had the chance.

hasslein 11-14-08 04:54 PM

The live action "Ghost Busters" with Larry Storch & Forrest Tucker.

FrmPeru 11-14-08 05:08 PM

Lucky Louie was a great show...I got the whole series (only 1 season and an extra episode) for 3.99 new at Movie Stop....aside from dodging a nude onscreen dude or two the show was awesome

LickTheABCs 11-14-08 05:49 PM

Action and Lucky Louie are both hilarious shows. Peep Show is one of the few shows that has caused me to pee myself on various occasions.

If you're a fan of Buffy, I kinda liked "Point Pleasant" a little show Marti Noxon and Ben Edlund was a big part of.

On the underrated front, Roswell. I didn't watch it while it was on the air, and only bought the DVD's cause they were dirt cheap at Best Buy. Plus, Katherine Heigl and Emilie de Ravin are both in it. I quickly fell in love with it. Finished all 3 seasons in about 2 weeks.

This isn't at all underrated, but I finally opened my season 1 set of The Shield the other day and watched the show for the first time. Fantastic show.

Back to obscure, loved Fishing with John.

edwardnortonfan 11-15-08 09:37 AM

"Birds of Prey" was a neat little superhero mishmash which was canceled after one season on the WB (not that any of that sounds like a recommendation, but I really like it).

I loved this show. I see there is a special edition coming out soon with this, Long Way Down, and Race to Dakar. I'll probably pick it up, especially since my release of Long Way Round is the shortened US version.

At least mostly unknown in the States... THE TRAILER PARK BOYS.

Great, hilarious show. It's about a couple of schemers that live in a trailer park, and it's filmed in a documentary reality show kind of way, almost like The Office, but we're in a trailer park, of course. These two guys go around trying to find ways to make a lot of money, by selling dope or reselling stolen barbeques, and almost always end up back in jail at the end of every season. They have arch-nemesis in the park, the supervisor and his gay lover assistant. It's a wild, crazy show from Canada... and they had seven seasons up there, and they even had a movie done by Ivan Reitman. The movie is available in the States on retail shelves, but you can order the seasons for this show from online places like Best Buy or Circuit City, or Amazon. If you ordered them even from Canada, Canada is region 1 just like us, so you'd have no problems. Look up some clips on Youtube.

I agree with both. Roswell is fantastic, I've watched the entire series several times. Everyone I've recommended it to has also loved it.

Point Pleasant was also very good. The sad part is the series really picked up after the aired episodes. The show probably would have found an audience it was left just a few weeks longer.

Lastdaysofrain 11-17-08 08:02 AM

I'm about halfway through Point pleasant and it's ok, but a little bit too O.C. for me at this point. I haven't gotten to the unaired episodes yet (maybe tonight).

You can pick that series up cheap though. I got the whole series used for about $4

Clone High: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clone_High

Overpar 11-17-08 10:39 AM

I have to say Ned and Stacey with a pre-Will and Grace Debra Messing and a pre-Sideways Thomas Haden Church.

skacore 11-30-08 08:43 PM

Ulraviolet. It was a 6 part series from the UK about vampires. It starred Idris Elba & Jack Wagner.

Wire In The Blood. Do yourself a favor and look it up.

Came in here to promote Dream On, as others already have. Shame there's only 2 seasons available...
