Finally! An anamorphic release of Lifeforce.

It's included in the triple feature set, They Came From Above, which has Alien, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers and Lifeforce. I got it at Circuit City for $7.99. The UPC number is 024543537335. Does anyone remember the cool trailer Lifeforce had with the eye?

LickTheABCs 10-24-08 12:24 AM

Now all we need is a Blu-ray release. Damn, a naked Mathilda May in 1080p. I just got chills.

basaro 10-24-08 07:40 AM

So, you've watched to confirm it's not just a package labeling mistake? Now it just needs it's own release.

Kevin M. Dean 10-24-08 09:01 AM

I looked at the back cover art on DVD Empire I don't see anything that mentions being enhanced for 16x9. Definitely watch to confirm whether your claim is valid.

Superdaddy 10-24-08 09:04 AM

I seriously doubt they stuck an anamorphic reissue in with two other movies for eight bucks. It is probably the old non-enhanced version.

Based on the cover art I've seen for that set, it appears to contain the old non-anamorphic disc of Kaufman's Body Snatchers as well.

Unlikely I agree, but not completely without precedent. The Steve Martin Box set has the only Anamorphic Lonely Guy right? And doesn't the only Anamorphic 48 Hours come in the 48 Hours Double feature set? And 8 bucks is a low price at Circuit City, but MSRP is $19.99...

ps. I hope jkth67 is right. I love this movie.

islandclaws 10-24-08 10:06 AM

^ The Steve Martin set also has the only anamorphic Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. The John Candy set has the only anamorphic version of The Great Outdoors.

Even if this were true, I'd still rather just wait for a BR release at this point.

JACOB 10-24-08 12:21 PM

universal HD has been showing the theatre version recently.

This would almost be worth eight bucks to get a decent transfer of Lifeforce even though I have have all three movies in the set. The picture on the old DVD is piss-poor in some places.

Or I might just wait for a Blu-ray release at this point. (Yes, Mathilda May would be glorious in 1080p. :))

Pizza 10-24-08 04:05 PM

I would certainly pay the $8 for the anamorphic Lifeforce and throw the other 2 discs away. But, I'm not willing to buy without more confirmation. Has anyone else picked this up?

meritocracy 10-24-08 04:56 PM

More than likely a labeling error, but a hell of a first post if this pans out.

Waiting for confirmation like the rest.

Yes, I watched the film before I posted and it is enhanced. There's no mention on the packaging about that but there are several other things on the DVD's that aren't mentioned on the back of the case.

lanemyer74 10-24-08 08:01 PM

Is this a 3 disc set? If Lifeforce has it's own disc, those of us that own the original edition can buy this one, swap discs & sell the triple feature to a store that buys back used DVDs.

Could you please list what those are?

Thanks.

Pizza 10-24-08 08:58 PM

I checked my local store and they had them in stock but they were not listed on sale. The price on the package is 14.99 and I wasn't going to chance it for 15 bucks. So, JKTH67, was that the price on your set and it rang up as 7.99? I know the website has it for that price but it is not available for in-store pick-up.

hotsexyboi 10-24-08 09:15 PM

Awesome!!!

Shelf tags are meaningless. If you are at all interested in a title go thru the checkout process, you can always change your mind.

Yeah, what Trevor said. "Price check on pork and beans please!!?"

Circuit City is notorious for not pricing shit. If you have no idea what the weekly specials are, don't even bother walking into a B&M and lucking out.

Considering your DVDTalk experience is riding on 2 posts, your reputation is totally on the line here ........... muwwaahhaaaaahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ....

Paul1957 10-24-08 10:39 PM

It's on sale this week at Circuit City, so we have to get it by tomorrow.

Spiderbite 10-25-08 01:11 AM

Can you also let us know if the copy of Body Snatchers is the non-anamorphic or anamorphic version as well?

seashellz2 10-25-08 03:13 AM

I WILL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT-and the time 100 mins or 116?

enhanced as in anamorphic-? or letterbox widescreen.

Actually, put the disc in your PC and open it on the desktop -set it at "column view"
you should see VOB/IFO/BUP_vts.01 etc files
if the date is recent it could be a new transfer-if its 1997-DAMN

Yeah, me too. Post an untouched screenshot. I seem to remember a few years back someone claiming the same thing about a movie. Turned out their tv just read the Zoom flag from the dvd and it was just cropping the black bars like any other letterboxed dvd.

 Now that's funny. Wonder how the dumbass felt after they realized that?

theWitcher 10-25-08 10:02 AM

The copy I just purchased DOES NOT include a 16x9 'Lifeforce.' Presumably it is the same disk that has been available for the last ten years minus a "collectible booklet:" scope transfer letterboxed in a 4x3 frame, with a trailer as the only extra.

The good news (for me) is that I didn't already own 'Lifeforce.'

And I didn't already own a 16x9 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.' I am hopeful that the extras from disk 2 will show up in a future Blu-ray release. This disk is disk 1 from the somewhat recent special edition (and is labelled that way.)

And the 'Alien' disk is the original release featuring isolated score, and what I think is another Scott commentary that does not appear on the Quadrilogy set. I only have the Quadrilogy version, so there's another plus for me.

I'm OK with the $7.99 purchase, but I wish 'Lifeforce' was 16x9.

Ask the guy who started this thread. He might have an idea.

Pizza 10-25-08 10:31 AM

The news from theWitcher pretty much puts an end to my hope for 16x9 Lifeforce bliss.

Still, not to confuse the issue, but looking at the product details for Lifeforce on Amazon, it states that the DVD was issued May 27, 1998 and that is certainly bad news. Then, look at the line above and it states -- Fox/MGM Home Video preorder: Sept 11, 2007. So, I suppose there's a small, small chance that MGM rereleased the title and then made the video an anamorphic one with little fanfare.

But, this is unlilkely. Oh, well.

No need for those comments.

The package clearly said enhanced, he put it in and it looked enhanced. A lot of us get confused by such things.

OP. Thanks for the post, even if it turned out to be wrong. We're here to help each other.

check post #12...packaging doesn't mention enhanced or 16x9

Trevor 10-25-08 12:07 PM

Sorry, I saw the labeling error post, know that we've had many of those in the past, and assumed the same.

Still think there is no need to slam the newbie.

Superdaddy 10-25-08 02:27 PM

Well, this is not that bad a deal if you don't own any of the three movies, or maybe just one of them. That's especially true if Body Snatchers is the recent anamorphic transfer. That leaves you with only one non-enhanced disc.

But since I own all three of these discs separately, the wait for an updated Lifeforce will go on...

Copper Blue 10-25-08 07:40 PM

I think this false alarm calls for some amusing FAIL pictures!

jkth67 10-25-08 09:16 PM

My disc of Lifeforce has a copyright year of 2008 on it. It's the 116 minute version and has a trailer. What copyright year is on your disc, theWitcher? Body Snatchers has a 2007 copyright year & a director commentary that's not mentioned on the package. I'll go through all 3 discs and make a list of features. I'll also scan the discs and post a pic. This is the last day for the sale at Circuit City.

There is a 1998 MGM Home Entertainment copyright on the silkscreen image on the disk itself. It is also exactly 116 mins (and includes the trailer):

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...iousDF/2-2.jpg

However, the *.vob files, etc. are dated 12/11/2006, for some reason, and the disk itself is called LIEFORCE:

Here are a couple other pictures of the package I purchased:

http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...iousDF/2-1.jpg
http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/k...aciousDF/2.jpg

This was purchased in ATL this morning around 10:15 AM at the Buckhead store.

lanemyer74 10-26-08 11:09 AM

That's interesting. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers DVD looks to be from the recent 2 Disc edition & not the older release pictured on the cover.
