Just out of curiosity, how are your operating costs (hosting, bandwidth, etc) getting funded?
One thing I should also mention is that we're not owned by anyone so there's no threat of being shut down on somebody's whim like DVDSpot was, which is nice. |

That's why you're going to get a lot of suspicions and questions along this line. People have been burned once before in this regard and aren't interested in letting it happen again. |

Neither was DVDSpot, until later down the line, after many people had invested their collections and time into the site, he then decided to sell out to c|Net.

I'm liking the look of Glyde. I'm sending you a PM Salo, I'd love an invite if it's not too late.

Why not? I'd rather use the sites to get info on Japanese DVDs than enter all that myself on another cataloging site. I'm assuming that people who are watching hundreds of Asian DVDs have some familiarity with the relevant languages.
Most Americans get their share of Asian cinema from English-languaged retailers, so familiarity with the languages are not even required there. And back to the "why not?". Perhaps I should have been more clear, that I meant, that they wouldn't be usable to most of us, because they are written in Asian alphabets. So while perhaps being better sources, they might for us be difficult to find or use. |
Today is 2 months to the day that "the spot" shut down. I just tried the url and of course it wasn't there. It will be a long time before I ever fully forget how pissed off I was when I saw they were closing the site.

Well, I just tried out Glyde. I noticed they have an import feature for UPCS. I cut and pasted my UPCs from my last file export from DVDSpot into a new Excel spread sheet. Glyde imported 673 out of 709, pretty good in my mind.
I haven't checked anything else out, including what was not accepted but I figured I'd report some good news. |
For me it as 173 of 179. I noticed it didn't inform me of what UPCs didn't import, which would've been handy ;) but I'm sure this minor bug will be resolved.
|
Apparently, this is taking off pretty well.
I got this when I tried to PM Salo. :D Salo has exceeded their stored private messages quota and cannot accept further messages until they clear some space |

I found the following site: http://www.listal.com/ and it looks promising. Have any of you been using this site or are familiar with it?
Edit - Some of the images on the front page might be NSFW. I tried it out and like it for the most part. It's pretty cool that you can put other things like games and books in there too. I threw a few things in there if anyone wants to look: http://nthpower.listal.com/ You can customize your display appearance which looks pretty nice: http://nthpower.listal.com/owned/dvds I'm probably not going to add too much yet. I'll wait awhile and see which site comes out on top, but Listal seems like a good candidate. |
I was politely asked by the site admin, X, to cease talking about Glyde. I certainly understand and I never meant to do anything inappropriate. Although I can no longer publicly discuss the website, I really do dig this board, so look for me, I'll be around.
|
Polite? Couldn't have been X. Did you at least detect any condescension?

would have been nice if the people who owned DVDspot had sold it or otherwise turned it over to someone else instead of giving a insufficient lame excuse to delete it and giving 2 weeks notice.
|
Wait, is "X" the Glyde site admin, or the DVDTalk site admin?
Any relation to "Q"? |

I haven't really used it since my big import attempt. I think they know of their current "to-do" list and so I'm sort of waiting until they've reached the next phase of usability. Some of those missing features make it hard to use seriously in its current form, but the interface is extremely-polished and it shows a lot of potential. The creators obviously have taken this task very seriously. I just hope they're willing to incorporate the missing features necessary to make it a suitable haven for DVDSpot refugees, even if that wasn't their initial intention. |
Once I managed to locate my collection file from DVD Spot, it imported 520 out of 553. Not too bad. I'm noticing that several covers are different than what the actual cover is, so maybe in the near future they'll incorporate a contribution system much like Spot had.

I tried Glyde and it looks pretty good. Some of the newer titles are missing...KFP, Wall-E, and as mentioned, that little movie about a guy in a bat suit.
It clearly is in its "alpha" stage, but the interface is slick, and I am sure it will evolve into something more robust. Cheers to Salo & Co. |
Im loving it also. Plus, the buying and selling of it seems to be pretty basic and easy to use.
I hope the pictures and stuff get updated and that store exclusives could also added. A search function as to what there is to buy instead of just the slow scrolling along the bottom would also be nice, as well as a search for names of other peoples collections. |
When viewing just my CDs, I'd like to be able to sort them by artist, instead of seeing everything in alphabetical order. Seeing your movies like that is fine, but not your music collection.
|
I am curious how long it took you guys to upload your collections. I am only trying to add about 800 titles and it appears to be uploading for about 20-25 minutes already. Is this normal? Seems like an awfully long time to me...
