Count seems like it has promise. I'm going to keep my eye on it.

Yeah, from what I've heard and seen it looks as though most of them moved over to invelos.com and profiler.

I added in a few import Blu's (like Sin City, Neverending Story) and a couple DVD's like the Grindhouse 6-disc. It's fairly easy.

I wouldn't go crazy and add stuff for the hell of it, though. Only stuff I own that I can't find because the search function is weird.

I'm hesitant to fully commit to it I shamefully admit. I don't want to go thru another spot.

I know that many great things have humble origins, and need support to succeed, but I would like more info on count before I commit to only putting my titles in there. Is it really just one guy? What kind of server space/bandwidth does he have? How is he going to pay for it all? What happens if 20000 people join and he can't afford the ISP fees? What are the site's plans?

I don't think he has forums set up yet, so I'll email him.

Sorry to sound pessimistic, I'm just very wary lately. Excel was working fine, and I can always host it on google apps to have the online component.

I completely agree with Trevor. I've uploaded my collection (from the DVD Spot export) and 43 titles didn't import. I have no intention to fix it right away. I'll wait and see how everyting rolls out. I'll probably add new titles though.

Yeah, the only reason I added them was to see if it'd be easy or not, and for the about 10 I added it took probably about 10 minutes. Not too shabby.

I had about 225 that didn't import, but they were probably all exclusives, which I didn't expect to be at such a new database.

But again, I could put a lot of effort into inputting all of my new purchases into count, and creating those 225+ exclusives, but then run of the risk of losing it all again.

Or I could just use my current spreadsheet with everything already there, just add my new stuff as I buy it, and easily have it online with google apps.

The benefit of DVDspot, and why it was worth the risk, was the nice design of the site, the fun interactive community, the pictures, the stats, etc.

Count has no forums, no display pictures, no stats.

Again, it's new and perhaps, with support, it will grow into something as great as DVDspot.

Anyone else having problems with DVDProfiler? I've been using the free version and the last two days when I've tried to add a title I keep receiving an error message, something about compatibility.

Do I need to update to a newer version? If so, is it still free and will my titles transfer over?

You only get to add 50 titles with the free version.

I was able to add all of my titles (350+) with the free version. But many of the features were unavailable after I passed 50. Can I not add more than 50 titles with the new version?

I was having some problems adding titles last night. There is an updated version out -- here's the thread where it was mentioned. I downloaded it and had no problems adding titles just now.

there is a VERY basic thing called DVD count .com (no spaces), which will incorporate your dvdspot exported file quite well (for R1 releases that is)... (for me it recognized 1500+, didn't recognize about 80 discs) but its free, and it's something.

We've been talking about it for the last several days here. Most of the last page or two of posts are about it.

I started using Count yesterday... of my 732 DVDs, there were 30 I had to add to the database, which isn't too bad. I wish the database had more info, but on the bright side, the fact that it doesn't makes the submission process fast and easy. :) For now, I'll maintain my collection there and at DVDAficionado... and hope that something better comes along.

I'm Johnny-come-lately to this thread but what the hell, I'll go ahead and vent.

I was with DVDSpot almost from the beginning. Many of the features were a direct result of suggestions that I (and a few others at the time) made to Croy, the site founder.

I am a huge fan of Asian cinema and made it my dedicated purpose to make the DVDSpot site accurate with regard to Asian stat information. For example, Croy's initial data import to create the site only took R1 and R0 DVDs that had a U.S. import. A lot of Hong Kong DVDs are R0. However, the import automatically assigned language as English 5.1 and constantly butchered the cast names. Plus you had multiple versions of these DVDs (Universe vs. Mega Star vs. Tai Seng import, etc.), each with different UPCs. I fixed up every one I came across. This does not even include the thousands of non-import R0 DVDs that were not in the initial data grab. And of course every single R2 or R3 etc. DVD in the database had to be added by hand, by someone.

I became an editor there from when Croy first offered editing privleges, and was also a forum moderator.

It was my suggestion to have "English (dubbed)" as a separate language option as just "English." I can't even remember all the other improvements I suggested. I think I submitted almost 3000 tickets; and god knows how many I edited.

I own or have watched over 400 Korean DVDs. Every single one had to be entered by hand. Every spec, every cast member, etc. A huge time-consuming effort. But you know what? I enjoyed doing it for the love of the hobby.

And it certainly wasn't just me. The other editors at the time were equally as dedicated and had great suggestions to improve the database. Some editors I think had TENS OF THOUSANDS of tickets they worked on (more than I ever did!). It was quite fun to watch this thing hatch and grow and get better and more accurate as we worked on it.

I even chipped in some $$ to the site founder b/c I figured it was just one guy with a dream and hell, it was a shared passion. I'm still majorly pissed off that he went and sold the site to CNET (filled with the hard work and free labor effort of several editors--some of which put a lot more work into the site than I did). We found about about it about 6 months after the fact with a notice along the lines of "hey, I sold the site to CNET and got a job out of it--thanks for all your input I was able to turn into a profit for myself."

Boy did I fell like a sucker. But I stuck with the site b/c there was no comparison for what it offered. I really liked being able to create filters by country and whether I owned a DVD (and had watched it); owned a DVD (but had not watched it); or watched a DVD on a rental but did not own it. I also really liked being able to track multiple viewings, leaving notes to myself about which bonus features I have watched (and which ones I still need to get to), and stuff like that.

And now that the plug was pulled, I look back at all that effort and feel, well, violated, I guess.

I haven't checked out frog or count or whatever, but my feeling is that they will not be useful for me considering the amount of R3; Korean and Hong Kong DVDs that I have.

I feel for ya, divemaster. You have every right to feel like you do. The founder sounds like a real dick with no appreciation for the members who got him where he was.

I'm toying with the idea of a DVD wiki. It seems silly to have multiple DVD cataloging sites all involved with the same work of adding new titles and updating existing ones. I'd like to see a free central database that individual sites and offline databases/spreadsheets can utilitize. There's no risk of effort being wasted since anyone could download the database and since it could be backed up to a different wiki host.

Myself I submitted like 200 tickets on spot - not as much as others, but I also feel terrible now - was it all just for nothing?
The main question that I'm thinking about lately - is it possible to get your data from spot now? I know it's closed, but maybe there still is some saved copy? OK, I can just sit and write down all the DVDs I have and that will not be a problem, but I just can't remember all the titles I've seen in a last few years, and that's something I wouldn't want to lose.

when i imported my collection over to dvd profiler they all came up foreign with no pictures. it is because i am ususing the free version?

I had switched from DVD Profiler to DVD Spot because I didn't want to pay the $30 to keep DVD Profiler. I am regretting that decision now. I haven't bought any DVDs for a while so I hadn't been aware that DVD Spot was shutting down. Needless to say, I didn't get a chance to back up my file. Fortuneately, I was still entering most of my in my Access database. I just wish I had my collection in something like DVD Spot, now.

Anyone using or tried dvdcorral.com/? just came across it.
