I love how one minute guys are loading the trucks with the nitroglycerin practically shitting their pants with every small step..

and the next minute our drivers are bouncing along south american gravel roads in old trucks AT 40 MPH!!! TOTALLY AT EASE!!! LOL.

These guys wouldn't have made it ONE MILE!!

This movie is about 4 men in high stress situations and how they deal with them..

its not "one of the greatest thrillers ever committed to celluloid".

Why do they have to describe it as that?

No, its not my opinion. Its on the back of the dvd case.

That was a possible theme. But the writers in the booklet, if Im not mistaken, say thats irrelevant to the greatness of the movie, i.e. its such a great thriller.

This is a DVD related question. Im bringing attention to what is written on the case and in the booklet which came with the dvd.

I didn't see any mention of the case/booklet in your original post. Looked like you were talking strictly about the movie's merits.

Count me in as one who wasn't the least bit disappointed.

It certainly is one of the great thrillers in cinema.

Criterion has a way of making every movie they release sound like the greatest thing ever put on celluloid on the back covers and booklets. I don't know why you'd hold that against the film itself.

I myself really enjoy this film (and I WAS on the edge of my seat). Can't wait for the upcoming Blu-ray!!

There is also an interestingly depicted undercurrent of homoerotic attraction between the two leads.

Seriously dude, lighten up. You have an opinion. That's great. Accept the fact that there's other people who will disagree with it, and move on with your life.

And second, you aren't expressing your disappointment on a DVD, you're expressing your disappointment on a movie. Therefore, it should go on the movie forum. Logic!

In answer to your question for a scene or two that had me trembling I would submit

1) Blowing up the boulder with the nitro
2) Turning around on the platform

I know there are others, but I have not seen this in a few years. if not a thriller, what would you describe it as; a romantic comedy?

And the more I think about it what is volatile in this movie may not necessarily be the explosives but rather the men themselves. Interesting.

Okay, you gave me some examples of thrilling scenes. To me there was nothing harrowing whatsoever about them.

As I said earlier, these guys are being so delicate and careful one minute, and the next they're barreling down a bumpy road without a care in the world.

So yeah thats my opinion.

I thought it was an ok movie...definitely suspenseful though I don't know that I'd classify it as a "thriller" necessarily...I guess what constitutes a thriller is up for debate too, though.

I don't know that I've ever felt as tense during a film, for as long as I was, than during Wages Of Fear. Of course, I watched it alone and with complete attention towards the film (I watched it for a film class). I imagine if I were watching it with a smartass buddy, during the day, while generally goofing around, I might not think it was suspenseful at all. In what kind of setting did you view it?

I watched it alone without any disturbances. No smartasses present (except myself, maybe).

Maybe I should revisit? Maybe I should watch it expecting nothing and see what happens?

I just couldn't buy into it. Hell, I wouldn't drive that stuff in a Cadillac at 10mph on a newly paved road.

My 2 cents...

I felt that the drawn-out drama of the film is the true merit of it being considered a great movie. I WAS on the edge of my seat when they tried to turn the truck around specifically because it looked realistic and had no cut scenes to shave down the time. A similar movie from that time in terms of drawn-out drama is Le Trou, another fave of mine. You couldn't get away with something like that nowadays due to the micro-attention span of most movie viewers. I was looking forward to the Blu-ray of this movie as it is one of my favorite films, but it looks like they're not putting it out. I hope that changes - I've rebought this DVD once, and I'll do so again!

'Wages Of Fear' is an example of film at it's highest form. One of the best films ever.

There are people who think Opera is boring and lame. Some people think Opera is exciting and thrilling. That has nothing to do with Opera really, just that person.

Some people think Wilhelmj doing the 3rd orchestral suite on the G string is boring and 'elevator music'. Othesr think it is the work of master interpreted by a prodigy and it is very emotional and exciting. That has nothing to do with the music, just that person.

You acknowledge that it's a great movie, that's good stuff because it is, and you show good taste and judgement in acknowledging it as such. The person who wrote a description of the film as a thriller experienced it in a very different way than you did. That has nothing to with the movie, just that person.

I found 'Wages' to be filled with a very palpable tension, and in a way and on a level that few films really attain. I still clearly remember the first time I saw the movie, when the match to light the cigarette was blown out by the other truck. That moment stuck with me till today and it's been a whil e since that first viewing. For me that's one of the better scenes in film history... that one is.
