What happens to your DVDs after you die?
 

Do you have anyone set to inherit them? Are they just going to end up being sold at an estate sale or Goodwill?

Unlike tape, which withers away, our DVDs will outlive us. Maybe they'll end up in good hands. Maybe the recipient will use our most valued titles as ash trays & cup holders, leaving our box sets to rot in the corner of some musty basement or garage.

One thing is for certain: one day we will all be gone, and no one will give a fuck about the bargains we found.

(I'd apologize for being morbid, but I think about things like this all the time.)

I believe there might have been a similar thread on this in the past, but it's a somewhat difficult subject to do a keyword search on. I plan on donating my collection to medical science.

yes i do remember a thread of a similar question. i think it became segmented into slightly heated debates about life and liberty, possibly even materialism and posterity.

i dont have an answer myself.

The ancient Egyptians believed you could take them with you into the afterlife and continue to never get around to actually watching them.

I don't care what happens to any of my stuff after I'm dead. Or anything else for that matter. I won't be here anyway

Mine have been instructed to sell on EBAY currently with money from them paying for any final cost I might have.

If I die unexpectedly, probably someone in my family will decide what to do with all my stuff. If I know when I'm going to die and have time to prepare, I'll probably just donate them to some charity.

Excuse me if this question sounds rude, but how old are you? I ask because I think that you'll probably care as little about what happens to your DVDs when you die, as your grandparents (or great-grandparents, as appropriate) cared about what happened to their books and 78s (that's vinyl records to you) when they died.

Much more likely your thoughts in a few years will have turned to what happens to your wife and kids when you die, and then you'll buy life insurance and put your will in order and maybe even consider a charitable legacy donation or endowment if your finances allow. Far, far down on the list will be who disposes of your stuff and how.

Mine are to be loaded onto the boat, along with my body, and then set fire, as the boat drifts lazily off into the sunset.

That’s a great question. We don’t really possess anything while we are alive. We are simply custodians of material things until we die. It’s ironic that some people actually serve their possessions. For example, the car owner who spends too much time caring for the automobile that is actually there to serve him. I hope I will have some foreknowledge of my death and I will give my DVDs to someone who doesn’t have a lot of “stuff” and would appreciate (watch) them.

For me, I am guessing that my wife will keep what her and the kids want and give the rest away to whoever wants them within our circle of family and friends. Whatever is left over will probably go on e-bay.

Sorry dude but if this is true, you're wasting your life. Live it and stop worrying about what's going to happen to your shit once your done. If it continues to disturb you, make a will and dictate what you want done.

To me, charity should get what I still got. At the beginning of this month I donated 150+ DVDs to the VA Hospital for wounded soldiers to enjoy while recuperating. I sure as heck wasn't watching them with enough regularity to justify hoarding them anymore. I figure if I want to see 9 to 5 again, I'll just rent it.

I will donate my dvds to third world countries. They can use them as mirrors.

My wife gets the chick flicks and drama, my son gets the horror, snd my daughter gets the disney. The Porn? I'm taking it with me.

1. Who's to say DVD's will out live us, no one can say for sure they will even last over 40 years. While there is no so called "wear" they can still decompose over time.

2. Who's to say you will even be able to play a DVD in 40 years. The players may not be made anymore and may be hard to find, who knows for sure. Blue-ray players can play them now but whatever comes next may not. VHS players have been commonly accessable for what about 25 year, but will they last another 15 years. Have you ever tried to find an old Super "8" projector for home movies?

3. Who is to say anyone would want to play a DVD in 40 years. Most today couldn't force themselves to play a VHS. Some have diffculty watching DVD now that Blue-ray's are out.

My belief is that these collections are for us only and no one would even want them once we are gone.

My DVDs will not outlive me, if the DVDs with disc rot I had to throw away are any indication.

Did you see any consistency with the ones that ended up with disc rot? I know I have some that play fine now but when looking at the pressed side there is an uneveness or cloudyness visible. I don't know if this has to do with the glueing process? or whether it is a non-factor. While it is not difficult to return damaged DVD's as a result of scratches from shifting in the container during shipping it is another thing to complain about something that may not occur for many years.
