Guillermo del Toro talks about 'Hellboy II' DVD...

'Golden' DVD Plans for 'Hellboy II'

Hellboy II: The Golden Army hits theaters July 11, but director Guillermo del Toro is ahead of the game with his home video plans.

“We start the DVD the day the screenplay gets approved,” del Toro said. “Javier Soto and I, we’ve been working on the DVD since day zero. He was there the first day we opened the offices. He has been documenting every step of the movie.”

Fans of del Toro’s previous extensive DVDs can look forward to the same wealth of material for Hellboy II.

“I like to let a very generous landscape come out for fans because I know the casual fan will never dwell into the DVD extras, really,” del Toro said. “But the kid who has no money to go to film school who wants to do short films, and do effects and do this and do that, can browse that the way I browsed Forry Ackerman’s Famous Monsters of Filmland or Starlog or Fangoria and listen and learn some of the craft.”

The model for del Toro was his director’s cut of the first Hellboy film.

“We have more content than we can shake a large stick at,” he said. “We we’re very proud of the Hellboy special-edition director’s cut, which was three discs, and we want to top it.”

However, fans shouldn’t expect a longer cut of the sequel.

“It’s the same as what I said in Blade II. All the deleted scenes are deleted because they were crappy. If you want to see them, that’s your problem. I think scenes that don’t work sometimes are good scenes or bad scenes, but they are taken out, and learning why they were taken out is very useful. As you direct and as you work, sometimes the most beautiful shot is the one that gets in the way of the storytelling, so you end up taking it out. I think it’s good schooling to know that. That crane that you spent half a day choreographing and beautiful Hitchcockian push-in, that’s the one you have to cut out. It’s nice for kids to learn that.”

The only problem may be for collectors. Since Hellboy was a Sony Pictures release and Hellboy II comes from Universal Studios, a DVD set of the two films is unlikely.

“I know, isn’t that a bitch to figure out?” he said. “I have the same concern, and I think the answer is we won’t unless someone strikes a deal that no one wants to make. I think that if at all possible I think the second and [eventual] third movie would get a package, but the first one won’t be there.”

I love Guillermo. He tells it like it is.

bring on the blu-ray.

Can't wait for this DVD set. Love the Hellboy!

DVD Polizei 07-17-08 12:26 AM

I was hoping Hellboy II would be around 140mins. But that's just me.

I'm also a huge fan of Del Toro, and it will be sad if he is not going to be able to create a ultimate boxed set for Hellboy when the 3rd movie is made. I'm looking forward to seeing how Golden Army is going to look on dvd. They have the potential to really make a great boxed set.

Movie was only slightly above average, looking forward to del Toro apologizing in the DVD supplements.

A-aron 07-17-08 08:53 AM

I'm looking forward to the eventual director's cut of the film.

Wolf359 07-17-08 09:54 AM

I can't wait to buy this dvd!

I really liked HB II, moreso than HBI, so I'm looking forward to picking up what should be the definitive edition for this film. I do wish the film was a little longer, but if Guillermo says it's not then I'll buy it.

I'm not sure though if a longer movie would have helped, but I for one wasn't all that impressed with the film's rather abrupt ending.

<i>Mod note: I've cut out all the non Hellboy related posts. I recommend people don't add any more...

Thanks

Glad to see a 3 disc but that cover art is really boring.

islandclaws 08-25-08 02:47 PM

Agreed. Weak cover art for the 3-disc, but that deluxe set with the Golden Army figure is VERY tempting.

undrwrldangel24 08-25-08 04:06 PM

I'm hoping for an actor's commentary to go along with del Toro's.

'Hellboy II: The Golden Army'
DVD Release Set for November 18th
September 8, 2008
The usually reliable DVD File Website is reporting that Hellboy II: The Golden Army will be released on DVD on November 18th. Reportedly the DVD will be available in several editions including a stand-alone disc, a Blu-ray edition, and a Collector’s Set that will include a Golden Army Statue and an excerpt from director Guillermo del Toro’s journals. Details concerning the pricing and the extras included on the DVD are not available at this time.

In spite of having its box office reign cut short by the debut of The Dark Knight, Universal’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army earned over $75 million at the domestic box office, a considerable improvement over the $59 million brought in by Sony’s first Hellboy film. Even in a crowded fourth quarter the DVD of Hellboy II should do all right as many who didn’t have the opportunity to catch the film in theaters will be able to check it out on DVD.

Sweet. Looking forward to this one!

Was a little let down by the movie as well, but I'm all over the 3-disk just for the extras. Especially since it sounds like its safe from an eventual Directors Cut.

MTRodaba2468 10-02-08 01:20 AM

I'm in for the 3-Disc.

EDIT: Scratch that, I'm in for the Blu-Ray.

Paul1957 11-10-08 05:38 PM

Got it in the mail today. The 3D lenticular cover changes from Ron Perlman's Hellboy to Mike Mignola's comic book Hellboy. Plenty of extras Hellboy: In Service of the Demon runs 153 min.

Sanjuro37 11-10-08 05:45 PM

I do wish we'd get a DC for this. I mean, I could barely tell what was added and cut for HBI, but HBII was really rushed in the second act and could have used some more exposition. But hell, the 3-Disc looks like it's up to Del Toro's usual standard for DVDs, and HBII is some of the most fun I've had in a theater, glaring warts 'n all.

mh4268 11-11-08 12:40 PM

I just got the 3 disc in the mail. I hate that when you hit the menu button they more or less spoil a scene in the movie before you can make a selection. The morphing of the 3-d cover is pretty well done.

Rammsteinfan 11-11-08 02:09 PM

I love the lenticular cover. Didnt think the morph would be so smooth.
