Here's the relevant wording in the announcement:It is rather vague - which I why I'm hoping we get a more definite announcement soon, so we can know exactly what to expect.
Damn you and your logic.

Mulvaney just responded via email to a poster at Criterionforum.org about the status of the forthcoming Criterion Blu-rays.

Mulvaney wrote, "Thanks for your email! We have no plans to discontinue standard DVD releases. Though it now looks like our first Blu-Ray discs will not come out until November, we will be releasing standard DVD editions of "Bottle Rocket," "Chungking Express," etc, as well. I hope this helps, and please feel free to write in again if you have any other questions!"

November is gonna be a great month if we get those titles.

As for October's releases Missing sounds really good so I'll at least give that one a rent.
Don't think I'm interested in the Melville titles now but maybe that'll change.

Now that Salo actually has an official release date, we only have one film that people can ask about every month.

Great month and all, but where are the Blu-rays?

Color me surprised as well that the BDs and simultaneous SD releases of previously unavailable titles didn't appear for October.

But delays are no problem; I've got a boatload of material to watch in the meantime. Will be watching for the re-release of Walkabout as well as El Norte. Those are the two I have my eye on.

I'll probably blind-buy both of the Melville titles during DD's 20% off sale.
I never blind-buy CC's, but for Melville I think I'll make the exception.

Melville is usually a pretty safe pick, though I was pretty underwhelmed by Un Flic. Now all we need is Two Men in Manhattan, Magnet of Doom and When You Read This Letter, and his filmography on dvd will be virtually complete.

This article mentions that Lisa Dombrowski, author of The Films of Samuel Fuller: If You Die, I'll Kill You!, will be doing the commentary track.

so are we to assume discs (catalog and "new") coming out December+ will be released on both standard AND blu-ray?

I read on the criterion forum that December will be Fuller month, with the release of "White Dog" and re-releases of "Shock Corridor and "The Naked Kiss".

But take it as just a rumor.

An email from Criterion's Jon Mulvaney confirms that they will release Luchino Visconti's Senso in 2009..

DVDBeaver on Le Doulos. The image looks sharper than the BFI.

Looking good. I expect it to look better than BFI.

DVDBeaver on Le Deuxième Souffle. Glad to see a full commentary from Vincendeau this time around.

DVDBeaver on the Mizoguchi set. The average-looking transfers seem par for the Eclipse course. I'm just glad to get more Mizoguchi on DVD.

Speaking of political cinema, is there any hope for Louis Verneuil's "I comme Icare" to be released by Criterion? Sorry, but somehow I don't dig Costa Gavras.
