why do you keep dvds
I know that this must have been talked about before but I couldn't find any threads on this. I wanted to open a discussion about "your" reason for "owning" DVDS. I ask this not to start trouble but merely to discuss it.
I myself am frustrated by a few things and I hope that I can get them ironed out by this discussion.
My problem with owning dvds is the fact that every major release people run out and buy that release, then two months later they realease a "special extended" edition. Soon after that there is the "buy all of them + bonus" versions. I know that each person has their own reason of buying these(collectors, big fans etc) but what do you end up doing with the non "buy all of them+bonus" dvds? I personally have just started buying the dvds that I want to keep. In the past I have been using netflix, redbox etc to watch my movies. So I really want to know why do you like owning the dvd vs having a service where you pay a monthly fee and you can get the dvd anytime you want? (Excluding hard to find dvds etc)
Anyways I look forward to responses to this.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Buy all of them + bonus version"
Why do I keep DVD's?
1. Because I love movies
2. Because I like having the flexibility of watching something whenever I want.
3. I love bonus material and keep DVD's I like to learn more about the movie and process of making it.
I also rent movies from Netflix and my local Mom and Pop video store, but if your asking me why I want to keep my "Live Free or Die Hard" DVD as opposed to renting it again and again? It ends up being cheaper for the long run to buy and keep a movie you like rather than renting it and then returning it. Doesn't it make sense to you to walk into your entertainment room and pull out the DVD you like and paid your hard earned money for whenever you want?
If I've seen the movie in the theatre and I like it, then chances are I will get the DVD if it's reasonably priced and has good special features.
I will rent a DVD of a film that I missed in theatres and that will usually help me determine if it has any replay value and is worth owning. I would say that maybe 20-30% of DVD's I rent that I actually end up buying. Saves me some money doing that.

Thats true but what about in 5 or 10 years when the technology has changed will you be able to even play those? I mean there is HD, Blue-Ray etc who knows what else is coming down the line. Plus the space to store them all. I guess my real curiosity is it better to own them in a digital format instead of a peice of physical media? It seems like our society has gone "digital" and I just am wondering in 10 years down the road what is going to be better owning the movie in some sort of non-protected digital format, or the physical disk?
Good example is tapes and 8Tracks.

Plus, I would rather have a Disc, then have to go through the hassle of logging onto my computer to load up my AVI or MP4 file of my favorite film. That IMO sucks. Plus I don't think there are many people who hook up their PC's to the DTS surround sound systems.

Why do you keep DVD's?
Why do you keep VHS? Why do you keep CD's? Why do they make porn available for download so you can keep it on your computer?
The answer is pretty much the same for any form of media...
...except you probably don't whack off to your CD's.

why not?
If you have the space and the money and are a fan of movies I don't see what you would not keep them if you like them enough. I only buy movies I like or unless they are dirt cheap so it doesn't feel like wasted money.

I have a library of DVD's. That means I can basically watch whatever I want, whenever I want. Whatever tickles my desired flavor for that day.
It's a known fact that there will most likely always be better versions of movies being released on DVD. I could care less though, as long as the transfer is adequate on a DVD release the first time around, I go for it. Unless the transfer on a new version is heads and shoulders above the old release (such as both 'The Mummy' movies), I don't buy them again. I could care less about the second disc.
And besides, if I waited for all these editions to come out over time and I never bought the movies I liked as a result... I'd be missing out on films I enjoy very much. And what's the point in that?

I keep them because having my favorite films around me to watch whenever I choose makes living in this fucked up ol' world a little more tolerable.

I keep them because I am trying to build a library of titles so that on any given day at any given time...I will be able to find something to watch that I enjoy as I find less and less intriguing shows on TV

Aside from some of the other great reasons already noted I'll add this - the only way I will be able to see some of the films I'm interested in is importing them; thus buying is unavoidable.
And for those few that do eventually make it onshore a year or two after their original release, what am I going to talk about on DVD forum while I'm waiting? Come on now ...

Sound like most of your problems can be fixed byt just waiting a few months or going to sites like I don't know, DVDTalk?, and checking out whether new editions are coming. None of your problems seem to apply to me at lease. I just love movies.
Also you are building at least some amount of equity. My Raw Head Rex is worth $80. And ever since I stopped buying movies the week they come out for $20, I don't loose much per dvd. And then there is always CH where I can get new DVDs the week they come out for about $5 average price.

As others have mentioned: I love movies. I love having my own library of films. I love having something to watch, no matter what my mood may be.
I may have only seen about half of the films in my collection - but I also rather like having a large kevyip.

A lot of the DVD movies that I have are not shown on television anymore , or very rarely. Espescially the older titles. This ensures me that I will be able to keep these titles alive to view for years to come. Whatever the other garbage they throw on regular television instead of movies. ( American Idol, Fear Factor, Survivor, etc.) Even the infomercials that they have on late at night when a movie should be on. I can view any movie in my collection at any time and not have to be bombarded with the crap that is on regular / popular television these days.

Now that I'm moving from DVD to Blu I am curbing my spending some and being more selective. I admit that when I was buying DVDs there was a lot of impulse purchases and stuff I could have rented instead of bought, so now that I have another shot at it, hopefully my collection will be more refined this go-round.
