The Wire - The Complete Series coming later this year!

Well, I'm sure glad I held off on buying the individual season sets (I had rented them instead) because now they made an announcement that an entire series box set is coming!

The Wire is one of those shows that I can probably watch again and again, unlike something like NYPD Blue, where I can't stand the unrealistic style of dialogue used.

wish it would be released on Blu-ray also, but most likely not.

I don't understand why people keep saying that about The Wire. The show was made to look gritty and raw...SD captures that. And due to the recent wave of "fixing" Blu-Ray releases there is huge potential for this show to get ruined. On top of that, I bet a good percentage of the people who ask for it in Blu get it home and says it looks like crap. Just my opinion however.

More importantly, HBO really needs to stop releasing these sets with extra material after we all fucking bought them already! I got lucky because I held off on The Sopranos, but with Deadwood and this coming out, (and I don't know if there is any additional bonus material) why should I keep buying if I am going to get screwed down the line later?

Exactly...the loyal fans who purchased these sets year after year get shafted down the line. But the studios aren't stupid, they know that by adding fancy packaging and a few exclusive features, it could possibly get us to buy the same seasons over again.

Do you really think that anyone is going to shell out the kind of dough HBO charges for these series sets (not to MENTION the added cost of Blu-ray) blind? If so, they deserve to be pissed off.

I agree. I'm pretty much done with them until they do Blu-ray releases.

i will pick up the season 5 set and be done with it. i really cannot bring myself to rebuy this series (as well as the sopranos) just because of some new-ish packaging and new extras. if new extras are created, i would hope that HBO would offer them separately for sale for those of us that have supported these releases previously.

I am not sure I follow. I am saying there isn't really going to be much of an improvement with The Wire in Blu.

Although you do bring up a good point. But what happens to the fan who does get into the series with the season sets, only to find out that the complete series set has more to offer? That is my beef.

I've been meaning to pick up the sets -- I'll be buying this.

My point is the quality is the quality. If it was shot on film will is undebatably guaranteed to look better on HDM than on SD DVD simply because Blu can match the resolution of film better.

I'd prefer it on Blu-Ray as well, even if it's still 480P: the whole series could have DTS-MA and it would be on less discs.

I have been patiently waiting since I started watching the wire during season 2 for the complete set. can't wait to re-watch it all over again.
