Boycotting DVDs

Are there any directors, actors, studios, etc. that you boycott and for what reason?

Mine's a big one, I don't buy DVDs from the big 6 companies because I don't like how they are attacking net neutrality. Still there are more DVDs from the alternative media than I could possibly ever watch but it is a challenge.

visitor Q 06-22-08 05:18 PM

Well at least with that clear conscience you'll be able to sleep peacefully every night. :)

And to answer your question, I actually do. Dragon Dynasty. It's a shame since I'd be all over most of the titles they've been or eventually might release.

Though any of their titles that I do own (2) I've purchased second hand.

ParadiseVendors 06-22-08 06:17 PM

I won't buy any Elia Kazan movies.

chris_sc77 06-22-08 06:21 PM

Anything Harlan Ellison was involved in.

Seantn 06-22-08 07:05 PM

Any movies made by Hitler.

I don't buy Adam Sandler movies because I think he's a no talent jerk. Does that count?

Sooooooooooo . . . I'm guessing you're a big supporter of Kim Jong Il.

Numes 06-22-08 09:49 PM

99% of the time I refuse to buy a Blu-Ray or HD DVD unless it includes all of the extras that the original DVD(s) contained. The exception is if I already own the original release(s). To a lesser extent, this also goes for SD DVD releases. There's absolutely no excuse for excluding content. Grrr... it makes me SO mad.

For me that's Will Ferrill. Can't stand the man.

SterlingBen 06-23-08 12:52 AM

ADV, much more evil in the double dipping department than Anchor Bay

Boba Fett 06-23-08 12:54 AM

John Wayne, although eventually I'll crack and end up owning Rooster Cogburn and The Longest Day.

Sure does...I avoid anything with Robin Williams, Martin Lawrence, Will Smith, Dane Cook, and Chris Tucker for the same reason.

This is both the funniest and most sadly ignorant thing I've read in some time. Orson Welles: Director... Actor... MURDERER!! Al Jolson racist? Blackface was common at that time. You should be boycotting Looney Tunes as well. But my favorite is Fatty Arbuckle. Do a little research before passing judgment for God's sake. And if you're going to boycott anyone who ever had someone die on their set, you might as well add such directors as Doug Liman, Wolfgang Petersen, Rob Cohen, John Woo and Alex Proyas. No picking and choosing allowed.

This and this.

Apone 06-23-08 04:58 AM

R4 DVDs with revised rating certificate.

riotinmyskull 06-23-08 05:10 AM

anything with larry the cable guy...it's a shame i'll never complete my pixar collection.

fitlissa76 06-23-08 06:03 AM

Awe, dude even in jest that's not cool to say about Fatty Arbuckle. His story is a sad one, poor guy. He was innocent.

Flicker 06-23-08 06:09 AM

Anything with Gilbert Gottfried or David Spade.

starman9000 06-23-08 07:08 AM

Patrick, you forgot that dude who directed Powder.

Numes 06-23-08 07:17 AM

It's intersting to see people "boycott" DVD purchases based solely on an actor. What is the qualifier? What if they have a cameo and are not an integral part of the movie? There are actors I can't stand either (Joan Cusack and Caroline Rhea come to mind), but that doesn't mean I am going to blindly ignore ALL movies/shows that they are in. I'm sure I own multiple titles with the actresses I mentioned.

Just curious if you guys are actually making your decision on the movie AND the actors or just the actors.

Lastdaysofrain 06-23-08 07:24 AM

Normally I think this kind of thing is pretty ridiculous, I watch movies on the merit of the movie, regardless of who's involved. I love the Hitcher for example and there's some GW Bush money in that movie, BUT the one place I draw the line is Victor Salva (the "Powder" guy) because not only is he a pedophile but all his movies drip with it.

So it's not so much a boycott of the DVDs, but a boycott of every giving that guy a single penny of my money. He should still be in jail

Well that would be hard to know since he is dead

porieux 06-23-08 09:53 AM

I boycott movies that I think suck, for example anything with Bruce Willis in it (with the exception of 12 Monkeys of course).

Well, see my above example. I don't like the movies he is in.
Same with Julia Roberts.....not in movies I would ever want to see.

Not for nothing, but Disney was the 1955 B'Nai Brith Man of the Year. His alleged anti-semitism was well researched and it was found that he was no more anti-semitic than any other man of his era. As far as anti-communist and anti-union, absolutely correct sir.

Is Womanizer something to boycott over?

orson welles - black dahlia killer
And I fell for it, hook line and sinker. ;)

Victor Salva is the first (and, really, only) name that came to mind for me.

And for the same reasons you list... how Disney missed the 'subtext' going on in Powder is beyond me. I don't think he could have crammed another wet, shirtless boy into that movie.

Numes 06-23-08 12:15 PM

I had no idea about Victor Salva until this thread. Powder was always a movie I kind of wanted to see. I think I will most certainly pass on Powder and any of his movies now.

Lastdaysofrain 06-23-08 12:59 PM

His crimes were also DIRECTLY releated to his films and his position as a director.

He took advantage of children on his set in his care essentially, filmed himself abusing them, and basically got off with a slap on the wrists, and came out of jail and went right back into filmmaking again.

Jeepers Creepers have some sleazy creepy subtext as well.

The guy is a certified sleaze and giving him a single cent will never happen from me.

Which is all much different than boycotting a movie because you don't like a particular actor or director's political views. Being a kid toucher isn't really a political view.

Like I said before, seperate the artist from the art, but in the case of Victor Salva, that is not an option.

PatrickMcCart 06-23-08 01:16 PM

I thought my reason for boycotting Orson Welles would have given away my intentions for that post. :D

Seriously, I think boycotting filmmakers is generally idiotic. You're not proving anything by snubbing Kazan's films. It's an empty and useless point to make. I think Woody Allen is creepy, but that doesn't change my enjoyment of Bananas or Annie Hall. I think Landis' conduct on TZ: The Movie was unforgivable, but half of his films are among my all-time favorites.

The truth is, if you shielded yourself from every artist or filmmaker that has done something objectionable (whether it's pedophilia or naming names), you'd be limited to watching Meet the Spartans and Disaster Movie.

I was reading through the posts and thinking about people's answers. I have no problem with other's opinions, and we have to realize that's all they are- opinions and personal preferences. I am a very socially liberal person, so I may choose to watch films and TV that go along with that type of view. However, like I said, I do understand that other actors and film makers have their own views also. I'm anti-gun in the real world, but I do like Magnum, P.I. and the Stone Cold series of movies that Tom Selleck has done. I've actually met him before. I could go on and on, but I'd say the only thing I boycott as far as DVD/ movies go is anything that exploits animals for entertainment, such as anything with horse racing, horse riding, dog racing, rodeo's, etc. I just don't think that is necessary, and it isn't entertaining to me, so I avoid it. So, I basically don't watch Westerns, Seabiscuit, etc.

BTW, I'm no Woody Allen fan either!
