I'm with you. Does it capture the film, yea kinda. But I still don't like it.

My guess is that most people who own the MOC version will not upgrade unless there are some more special features added to the Criterion version.

I had the chance to see BUTB when it came to the Music Box at Chicago with Crispin Glover narrating, and it was truly a fun time - live foley sound effects, a band, Mr. Glover's line-readings (ROMANIA!), and a performance by a "castrato."

Part of me truly wants to pick up this release, but then I wonder if part of my love for the film wasn't the whole experience I had that night. I'll have to muse on this one for awhile.

I'm finding it amusing just how many people yearn to see Salo's infamous coprophilia in hi-def on BR.

You don't need to imagine; it's on Criterion's website - $29.95.

I will definitely be picking up Salo this time :)

I also find it amusing that people went out in droves to buy Superbad on BR.

As far as I am concerned however Pasolini's work is much more deserving of a 1080p treatment than a lot of the other crap, no pun intended, sold on the market.

Ciao,

I own the MoC and I'll only be upgrading if its released on Blu-ray. As much as I love the news Criterion is releasing on blu-ray it has made me very cautious about buying new titles. I'll still get Salo and Vampyr though.

dx23 05-16-08 10:25 PM

I just hope that people aren't buying Salo in hopes of having a future investment in their hands.

I'll purchase it if I find it cheap, but I don't think is going to have to much replay value at my house.

AGameWithStones 05-17-08 04:17 AM

The only one of these releases I'll buy immediately is the Shepitko box...a bit dissapointing that her second theatrical feature isn't in this box; and there's certainly no small amount of Shepitko material left (she directed various shorts, and a television film, a segment of The Beginning of an Era, and of course, her husband Elem Klimov's short documentary on her) that could have made this a nice Criterion proper set.

I will, however, buy The Small Back Room during the November sale, and depending on the length of those extras, I may double dip for Twenty Four Eyes. Brand is a rental, Salo I'm not ready for (I can barely make it through Watkins's War Game or Punishment Park).

Still, you know, not a bad month.

I am a big fan of Maddin's work, so naturally Criterion just made my day. I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time.

Also, Salo for real this time and not an April Fool!

it was supposed to come Landmark E Street - they had posters and trailers for it - yet it never came. It played at the Virginina Film Festival - but that sold out real fast, It also played at the Rehobeth Film Festival (which I couldn't make it to).

I passed on seeing BUTB at the Music Box in Chicago because I didn't want to send $50 on tickets, but I regretted it.

Yeh, I'm not sure what I'll do. I might try to unload the BFI quick and see how much I can get for it. If I can sell it and only have to pay a few bucks more for the Criterion I'll do it.

Forgive me for not seeing the news, but what is the Blu-Ray news everyone is talking about? Did Criterion finally set a release date to put their movies out on Blu-Ray or just a "yes we will but sometime in the future"???

Their most recent newsletter announced that they'll start released Blu-Ray discs in October. http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=531071

How did Criterion regain the rights to sell Salo? I'll probably pick up this movie just to see what all of the commotion was about, it'll go nicely next to my Cannibal Holocaust DVDs.

For what it's worth, the DeepDiscount price is $26.59 on pre-order, the release date is August 26th. Since it's a pre-order the 20% sale doesn't apply.

Kory 06-06-08 04:17 PM

The DeepDiscount pre-order price was $18.xx for a couple of weeks. They only recently raised it up that high. There was a big thread about it in DVD Bargains, I believe.

It was one of the five films Criterion licensed from MGM in exchange for the use of the Raging Bull commentary. House of Games was also part of the deal. The remaining three have not yet been announced.

AGameWithStones 06-06-08 05:55 PM

Rumor has it that the remaining three films are related, and may be released together.

I wish one of them was a reissue of This is Spinal Tap. Damn, I want the Criterion disc but it's way out of my price range.

mikelowry 06-06-08 08:53 PM

I know what you mean. The MGM SE of it is good, but I want the Criterion release as well, just because I'm a completist.

Wow!!! Glad I found/saw this thread. August is going to be a phenomenal month for Criterions. A ton of good stuff. I haven't seen this many good Criterions (ones I really want/must own) in a long time (usually just one or two). I'm definitely getting Salo. I don't care how retched or disgusting it is.
