I had the chance to see BUTB when it came to the Music Box at Chicago with Crispin Glover narrating, and it was truly a fun time - live foley sound effects, a band, Mr. Glover's line-readings (ROMANIA!), and a performance by a "castrato."
Part of me truly wants to pick up this release, but then I wonder if part of my love for the film wasn't the whole experience I had that night. I'll have to muse on this one for awhile. |
I'm finding it amusing just how many people yearn to see Salo's infamous coprophilia in hi-def on BR.

I will definitely be picking up Salo this time :)

As far as I am concerned however Pasolini's work is much more deserving of a 1080p treatment than a lot of the other crap, no pun intended, sold on the market. Ciao, Pro-B |

I just hope that people aren't buying Salo in hopes of having a future investment in their hands.
I'll purchase it if I find it cheap, but I don't think is going to have to much replay value at my house. |
The only one of these releases I'll buy immediately is the Shepitko box...a bit dissapointing that her second theatrical feature isn't in this box; and there's certainly no small amount of Shepitko material left (she directed various shorts, and a television film, a segment of The Beginning of an Era, and of course, her husband Elem Klimov's short documentary on her) that could have made this a nice Criterion proper set.
I will, however, buy The Small Back Room during the November sale, and depending on the length of those extras, I may double dip for Twenty Four Eyes. Brand is a rental, Salo I'm not ready for (I can barely make it through Watkins's War Game or Punishment Park). Still, you know, not a bad month. |

I am a big fan of Maddin's work, so naturally Criterion just made my day. I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time. Also, Salo for real this time and not an April Fool! |
I passed on seeing BUTB at the Music Box in Chicago because I didn't want to send $50 on tickets, but I regretted it.

Forgive me for not seeing the news, but what is the Blu-Ray news everyone is talking about? Did Criterion finally set a release date to put their movies out on Blu-Ray or just a "yes we will but sometime in the future"??? |

How did Criterion regain the rights to sell Salo? I'll probably pick up this movie just to see what all of the commotion was about, it'll go nicely next to my Cannibal Holocaust DVDs.
For what it's worth, the DeepDiscount price is $26.59 on pre-order, the release date is August 26th. Since it's a pre-order the 20% sale doesn't apply. |
The DeepDiscount pre-order price was $18.xx for a couple of weeks. They only recently raised it up that high. There was a big thread about it in DVD Bargains, I believe.

Rumor has it that the remaining three films are related, and may be released together.

Trilogy of Life box set: The Decameron Canterbury Tales Arabian Nights Who knows. |
Wow!!! Glad I found/saw this thread. August is going to be a phenomenal month for Criterions. A ton of good stuff. I haven't seen this many good Criterions (ones I really want/must own) in a long time (usually just one or two). I'm definitely getting Salo. I don't care how retched or disgusting it is.
