But haven't they always been switching distributors? It was BCI for a period & Media Blasters for another, right? What's their current distributor that's going down?

Source?

If this is true I might pick up Rituals and Nightmare soon. I think those are the only Code Red titles I'm missing that I want.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found some talk about it over at AV Maniacs Forums

While I'm at it, it kind of bugs me the way the guys who run Code Red (& some other label heads, I think) are more interactive on these forums than they are through their own websites/blogs. I'm tired of going over to AV Maniacs to find out what's new with Scorpion & Code Red & Mondo Macabro.

(Sorry, I hope it's not against DVD Talk policy to complain about other forums.)

I believe there is another forum that the owner of Code Red post, where you can actually ask him questions directly, not sure if its against this forums rules to post a link, but ifs a forum called nightmare usa at laternia forum.

Some are and some aren't. I've been posting there lightly for a little while and haven't run into anyone being a jerk to me at all. I'm not sure how long it took to get approved to post. You'll get the occasional arguments in the Blu-Ray forum about what X person thinks of a transfer though.

Cliff from Shout Factory, Bill from Code Red and Don from Synapse all posted there pretty frequently. Don hasn't in a while though (probably busy).

I noticed that "Savage Streets" Amazon marketplace's prices have ballooned yet again. That mean it isn't getting a re-release?

I think some of the "Exploitation Cinema" double features are going out of print. I'm fairly certain that's the case with Where Time Began / Encounters With the Unknown, which has been gradually disappearing from online retailers.

Since the talk of a re-release, I haven't seen any updates about it. Arrow Films did release a pretty solid edition overseas (if you are Region Free) if you do want it. I can't remember if it ported all the extras over from the BCI disc, but I know there was talk of both companies using the same transfer.

Some major updates regarding Code Red.

1. Official blog post: Code Red Plans to Sell Direct to Customers

2. Re: Ghostkeeper - The director recently posted this to the IMDB Ghostkeeper board:

It's been frustrating for me too, I was expecting it to be out August 2011 but that's how it goes. Bill from Code Red called me Tuesday Feb 14 and is sending a preview copy to me which I should have in the next few days. The commentary and an interview with the "old lady", now 86, is worth the price alone, a lot of fun and insight 31 years later.

All previous copies were on VHS and made from 3/4" video, which is really crappy., this DVD is made from a real 35mm print and pretty good quality.

BTW we're having a Ghostkeeper party at the original hotel in Lake Louise sometimes soon, gonna screen it and also have a great time. Everybody's welcome, the hotel loves the movie and the original part we shot in is going to be torn down in 2013.

Hoping to shoot the sequel in Nov/2012. Sequel is set 31 years later... with the real actors and a cast and a lot more stuff.

You can catch more of my Ghostkeeper journey and other movies I made since then at my blog http://myfilmproject09.blogspot.com

Ghostkeeper DVD available

Wow, this has to be the least Code Red-oriented forum on the internet.

After Navarre stopped distributing home video, Code Red has released Ghostkeeper in limited quantities as a direct-sell-via-Paypal title. "U.S customers pay $21.00 , Canadian customer pays $24.00, Overseas customer pays $25.00." Since CR's not professional enough to actually set up a webstore or advertise this on their official web site, to buy this you have to sent your Paypal payment to [email protected].

If this sounds shoddy & you're concerned, don't worry, you can peruse the CR threads at Latarnia or AV Maniacs to see this is a real release & plenty o' folks have happily gotten their DVDs in the mail. It's rather amazing it's sold the copies it has so far, considering the complete lack of advertising & clandestine method of distribution. It's a total grapevine release.

DVD Talk's own Ian Jane reviewed the DVD. Not here at DVD Talk, but over here at RockShockPop.com .

If you don't want to buy directly from Code Red, there's some douche on Ebay selling this DVD for $60. There's also a 3rd Party Amazon seller who has it for $25, but this Amazon seller has been widely rumored to be Bill of Code Red. Bill says it isn't him, it's an "associate."

Re: Code Red releasing horror/sleaze titles fall 08, including Savage Streets!

Bill is going to be the death of Code Red, simply because he can't adapt. It's one thing to decide to start selling things through your own website but then to have your shopping system be nothing and not advertising anything. How inept does one have to be to have that as your business plan?

SethDLH 05-11-12 11:26 AM

Re: Code Red releasing horror/sleaze titles fall 08, including Savage Streets!

I ordered 2 discs from him last month, they arrived fast and in good shape. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again, though it is a bit of a hassle how he's currently running it.

Re: Code Red releasing horror/sleaze titles fall 08, including Savage Streets!

Yeah, I don't think it's a scam or anything but the execution of how he does it is silly. I'd love to see him try to explain how he runs things to a bank if he were ever trying to get a loan.

Bill: You see, I don't advertise anything, so everything spreads by word of mouth from fans through message boards.

Banker: So then the customer goes to your site and orders the movies?

Bill: Not exactly, I literally don't have anything at the website that you'd normally see from someplace that sells anything. Things like what we sell, prices, a way to order, etc. What I do is have people send me an email to my yahoo account, I tell them a price and then they paypal it to me.

Banker: ...

He could do something as simple as just selling stuff on amazon marketplace or ebay and have a better shopping system.

Some of his patient supporters have suggested this. Again and again.

Some of his antagonists have suggested the opposite: that he actually is an Amazon seller whose name appeared on their Amazon invoices.

Whatever, that's not the issue.

Listen, I ordered Ghostkeeper, I received it quickly, it's one of Code Red's better DVD efforts, I'm personally satisfied with this DVD and this transaction. I think this current Paypal-by-Yahoo selling approach is yet another in a long line of Code Red's numbskulled marketing decisions.

The folks I'm not so sure benefit from this direct-selling model are the filmmakers whose films, in CR's post-Navarre era, have even less distribution than before, which means far less opportunities for new people to discover their films. They're not making any less money with this new model, I don't think anyone expects profit from Code Red, but they expect their film to be seen, or be given the opportunity to be seen, by a certain number of people. Ghostkeeper's director is taking it all in good stride, humbly grateful that his film's DVD finally saw the light of day but still wishing it could have been sold by Amazon.

Any thoughts about how the the filmmakers should feel?

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi 05-11-12 03:31 PM

Re: Code Red releasing horror/sleaze titles fall 08, including Savage Streets!

Personally, if I were the filmmaker I'd be pissed off since anyone with an email address and paypal could distribute it the same way. To get it up at Amazon, there's just a form to fill out. I've done it before, it's not that difficult. As dumb as it sounds, they could have probably gotten a better start distributing it themselves by doing a project at kickstarter.

I guess some blame falls on the filmmakers since they didn't bother to ask how Bill would handle it.

Hmm, interesting. Living Deadpan, do you know if the prices you cited for Ghostkeeper include shipping? If so, I'd consider it, though it's more than I like to spend, especially for a movie that's more of a decent curio than anything outstanding. The new print looks like a major improvement on the atrocious previous DVD release, caps of which I posted in one of the recent "Guess the Movie by Screenshot" threads.

As to the director's intention to remake the flick, I'm of two minds about it, as I told him in an exchange on IMDb. If he improves the aspects of the original that were lacking (flimsy story and weak acting, mainly) while retaining the uniquely creepy flavour of the movie (which I highly doubt he can recreate), then he would have a winner. I would have left well enough alone if I were him. The original's a pretty good movie.

Those prices do include shipping. I haven't ordered my copy yet but will soon. I think he said he originally had 500 or so.

Thanks - ordered a copy. I was pleased with the quick turnaround during the "secret sale."

Looks like Savage Streets will be sub-licensed to Scorpion Releasing and part of Katrina’s Kat Scratch Cinema line.

DVDaf has the cover and release date as Sept 18, 2012

Bigger pic of the cover HERE.

I did not know there was a Katarina's Kat Skratch Cinema line. Is there more titles announced for this line? And is it replacing the Katarina's Nightmare Theater line?

Re: Code Red releasing horror/sleaze titles fall 08, including Savage Streets!

The only other title listed under this line so far is Ator The Fighting Eagle. I would only guess they will continue to release horror titles under the Katarina's Nightmare Theater line.

Katrina's Nightmare Theater shows a release date of July 24th for both The Hearse/Blood of Dracula's Castle and The Day After Halloween so it looks like it's sticking around.

It's too bad they decided not to go the Blu-ray route, they have a couple of titles I likely would have purchased.

+1, I think blu-ray releases would be popular enough to turn things around for Code Red. On Code Red twitter tweets seemed decided opposed to high definition.
