How likely is a future Criterion release for Cronenberg's Scanners?

Wonder if they'll put out an Alan Smithee multipack. Burn Hollywood Burn, The Birds 2: Land's End...

My main problem with WB's multipacks, particularly the TCM ones, is that some of the titles were formerly double-sided discs with additional titles you don't get with the TCM sets. They're useless if you want the Frederic March version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde or Mystery of the Wax Museum.

The MGM/Fox 3-packs are preferable if only because each film comes with its original disc. It's decidedly inconvenient, however, that they don't list the special features on the back, so with some films you don't know if it's the bare bones or Special Editions (The Howling, for instance). I have the Motel Hell/Wrong Turn/Needful Things triple feature, and the Wrong Turn disc is 2-sided with all the bonus features, but I know the "Terror From Above" set has the original "20th Anniversary" edition of Alien (though, for soundtrack & sound design enthusiasts, it does have 2 isolated audio tracks not carried over to the 2-disc Collector's Editions).

Spot on. Anchor Bay seems to be heading in this direction as well. Aside from their new productions, they've basically become the Evil Dead Reissue Company. They dropped a lot of titles on that last list. I was surprised even the Hellraiser & Hellbound anniversary editions are going OOP, is Anchor Bay letting go of their Hellraiser rights too or is this a ploy to get more people over to Blu-ray?

I noticed they were getting rid of their Divimax editions. Creepshow 2, Children of the Corn, Dead Heat....

Let's hope Blue Underground doesn't follow this pattern too. Right now they're merely stagnant. I saw an interview with Bill Lustig where he said they're going to focus on remastering their "pearls" for Blu-ray rather than acquiring new titles (economical concerns).

Wrong. Mcarver does this on his own just as a service for people who
come to dvdtalk. He doesn't have to do the list ever again if he doesn't feel like it.

I don't like seeing huge chunks of catalog titles going out of print, but I can sort of understand why they do. Most of these titles are probably so low-demand that they only move a couple of dozen units a year and it's not worth the expense of keeping them in print.

DVD sales are down, and sales of catalog titles in particular are down, so it shouldn't be surprising that studios aren't digging into their catalogs these days. With Circuit City and Suncoast out the picture, and Best Buy, Borders, and Wal-Mart shrinking their DVD sections, there isn't a whole of lot shelf space in retail stores these days.

That's fine. I'd rather him not do it at all if it's not going to be done right. It's just a waste of time on his part.

Now that you know in your mind that this thread is a waste of time, you can save some of your valuable time by not reading or posting snide comments about someone who puts a lot of effort into these updates.

For your information, studios often make the decision to discontinue a title well before an official announcement. They often just quit making the disk without telling anyone and telling retailers the disk is on "back order." Eventually they put out a formal announcement.

I'm sure that if you researched thousands of obscure titles every week, you could sometimes spot a pattern that might indicate a DVD was going out of print. Or it just might indicate the warehouse was running low and the studio hadn't gotten around to manufacturing some more. Or it could indicate something else. Since you'll be saving so much of your time by not following this thread, I'm sure you can investigate away to your heart's content.

I find this thread a valuable resource and it has on more than one occastion tipped me off to buy a movie that I wouldn't have been able to find a month or two later. I'm very appreciative of mcarvers's work here.

Here's an even better idea... go find another board to troll and quit trying to piss off members here who have been providing valuable information.

Taking into consideration the fact the mcarver has been dutifully posting price reduction and out-of-print lists on this board every week for years, I'm sure that he's using the best, most current information available to him.

Why be a jerk. Just let us that use this info use it. Go about your business. It seems that you have a lot of time on your hands to whine so what about you pick up the slack if you can do better.

Personally, this is one of the few threads that I check religiously. Regardless of how timely the information is, just knowing certain titles are OOP is of value in and of itself. It tells me to keep my eyes open at second hand shops, etc. I've also lost count of the number of titles that it did tip me off to, well in time to score a low price.
