Wow, we got a terrific e-mail from reader John Kelly, who we're grateful to for sending us the tip. He points us to a YouTube video (embedded below) that features Firefly's "Kaylee", Jewel Staite (currently seen on Stargate: Atlantis), answering questions at the "Supanova" Convention held last weekend (March 29-30) in Melbourne, Australia. She's talking about the possibility of whether a new story could ever be done for Firefly, picking up after the events of the feature film Serenity. She says that she thinks the door is still open to it, and establishes that "if they called I would be there in a heartbeat". She points out that there is still a lot of demand for the show, and that the studio recognizes it. In the process she dropped this bombshell:
"I just heard that they're re-releasing Firefly, a special edition of Firefly in a box set. They actually asked me if I was able to come down to L.A. and do a commentary in the Spring at some point. So I think that would be fun"
Nice! The existing Firefly DVD set continues to be a good seller, and has a good number of extras. But that wouldn't stop many fans, myself included, from double-dipping on a special edition release if it had enough new goodies on it, and at the right price.
Here's a look at what Staite says; listen for yourself:

This pisses me off. Unless the extras are so overwhelming or they're going to announce the show's return, I'm not giving Fox another penny for this show.

There's no reason to think that a re-release would be country-specific.
They'll probably to audio commentaries for every episode this time, and do some cross-promotional retrospective with the film, just as the film's DVD release did with the show.
Perhaps extended versions of episodes is also possible? Restore the original Prologue shown on FOX at the time of airing?

Meh. If FOX wanted to really impress us they'd foot the cost of a new tv movie or miniseries. As much as I love FF, I'm not giving those show-cancelling, milk-it-for-all-its-worth bastards any more of my money.

Jewel also says something to the effect of, why the hell are the studios re-releasing this stuff. Just make another Firefly installment.
Unfortunately, this could be just bait to buy the "Special Edition".

Ugh - I've already bought Serenity three times: The first release, the HD release, and the 2-disc SE. I've read that Universal was impressed by the sales of the 2-disc enough to seriously consider new episodes and/or movie - straight to video or theatrical - either way, make new the installments already!
