They would have to be. 49 eps. on 7 discs. Unless they're compressed down to 7 hours on one side of a disc. Don't known about re-issues but the original double sided releases don't have any issues. If problems have been reported with these may be worthwhile to track down the first releases.

They do when you want to load them into a carousel player

Actually, the original pressing of the second season is defective - namely the second disc ("The Inheritors, Part I"). Maybe some people got their discs to work, but there were enormous amounts of complaints at the time and Sony quietly sent replacements if you contacted them. The newer pressings seem to be OK, but problems with dual-layer, double-sided discs are very common -- which is why no one uses them anymore, as far as I know.

Considering I paid $20 a piece for the original season sets, which contain the exact same discs, I think this is just a way to jack up the price and get it back in stores.

Actually, the very first pressing was not defective. If you bought it right when it came out, you received a good set. That first pressing sold out relatively fast and it was the following pressings that were defective and received all the complaints.
