Title: Popeye the Sailor Starring: N/A (Animation) Released: 17th June 2008 SRP: $34.98 Further Details: Warner Home Video has announced Popeye the Sailor: 1938-1940 Volume Two which includes 31 uncut and remastered shorts. The 2-disc package will be available to own from the 17th June, and should retail at around $34.98. Extras will include commentaries, Popeye Popumentary featurettes, an Out of the Inkwell: The Fleischer Story retrospective documentary, the feature-length movie Gulliver's Travels, vintage audio recordings, radio interviews, and more. That's weird, back in November, TVShowsonDVD reported that volume two would be from 1938-1943, not 1938-1940, and that it would include over 55 cartoons. I wonder why they changed their mind?

I used to watch Popeye every day in the morning for as long as I can remember on cable in the 80's. Anyways, I'm sure the episodes were heavily syndicated, but there was one episode in particular, the "Aladdin" episode that I distinctively remember two completely different animations in particular portions of the episode. This was not just cut differently, it was different dialog and animation in the episode.
Anyone familiar with this? I would love to have this mystery solved after almost 20 years! :) |

To be specific, there were 220 five-and-a-half-minute shorts from the 1960 series. some of them have been released on public domain releases, specifically this release which included 85 of them.

Yep I have that set.There are a few more in the Poyeye animated movie that came out a few years ago.I would guess that WB would release 40 in a 2-disc set.

I guess I'll echo what a lot of other people are saying here: I would like another 4 disc set, please.
The first Popeye release was on of the best DVD releases of 2007, in my opinion. It hooked my eight year old son on POPEYE, the Fleischer stuff at least, and we were both looking forward to volume two. Do you really think it's about the cost of the set? The Looney Tunes Golden/Spotlight collections have found a good solution for that. |
Are the shorts on Popeye the Sailor: 1938-1940 Volume Two "muttering" Popeye cartoons or did Fleischer do away with his comical gibberish after 1937? I can't get enough of those!

Warner Home Video is advising consumers who purchased Popeye the Sailor 1938-1940 Volume 2 DVD that two shorts on Disc 1 have an alternate opening credits sequence. For any consumer who wants to have disc 1 replaced with the original opening credits sequence, please contact Warner Home Video at 1-800-553-6937 so that a self-addressed stamped envelope can be sent to you for return of your current disc. Please note that the replacement discs will be sent to you in approximately 8-10 weeks. |
