Thanks and I'm glad it's 2 discs. When buying them at Columbia House, they make for one hell of a deal.

That's weird, back in November, TVShowsonDVD reported that volume two would be from 1938-1943, not 1938-1940, and that it would include over 55 cartoons. I wonder why they changed their mind?

Deco King 02-22-08 07:15 PM

I'd like to ask the question again : when will the first Fleischer Betty Boop cartoon Franchise Box Set appear?

Disc-Flipper 02-22-08 07:20 PM

How many sets will it take to complete the Popeye series?

The average person would rather spend a little $$$ at a time instead of instead of a lot of $$$ at one time. I wanted the Popeye Volume 1 but there's been other sets I wanted ahead of it. If they would have released that in 2 (2 disc sets), I would have probably gotten it by now.

I assumed it would be around 4 sets. If my numbers are correct, there are 234 theatrical shorts. (108 from Fleischer, 126 from Famous). With this new set being so thin though, I'm guessing it'll be around 5 or 6 sets total.

MrBlud 02-23-08 12:10 AM

These are the proper cartoons and in the right order correct?

They just chopped the set in half right?

bluetoast 02-23-08 12:30 AM

Right, they're still going chronologically.

Ask Lionsgate, who has the rights via the Republic libary that Paramount licensed to them so they could do absolutely nothing with it (and the rest of the Republic library).

Or write to Criterion since they have licensed from both Paramount and Lionsgate.

I used to watch Popeye every day in the morning for as long as I can remember on cable in the 80's. Anyways, I'm sure the episodes were heavily syndicated, but there was one episode in particular, the "Aladdin" episode that I distinctively remember two completely different animations in particular portions of the episode. This was not just cut differently, it was different dialog and animation in the episode.

Anyone familiar with this? I would love to have this mystery solved after almost 20 years! :)

joltman 02-23-08 07:18 PM

To be specific, there were 220 five-and-a-half-minute shorts from the 1960 series. some of them have been released on public domain releases, specifically this release which included 85 of them.

dvd-4-life 02-23-08 07:44 PM

Yep I have that set. There are a few more in the Poyeye animated movie that came out a few years ago.I would guess that WB would release 40 in a 2-disc set.

All three of the two-reel Fleischer Popeye cartoons had footage re-used in 3-4 Famous Studios "cheater" cartoons. They re-edited the cartoons, added new animation with Popeye and his nephews, all to fit one reel. I think Aladdin was split into two cheaters since it's the longest of the two-reelers (over 20 minutes).

Ethan VanSciver 02-24-08 02:21 PM

I guess I'll echo what a lot of other people are saying here: I would like another 4 disc set, please.

The first Popeye release was on of the best DVD releases of 2007, in my opinion. It hooked my eight year old son on POPEYE, the Fleischer stuff at least, and we were both looking forward to volume two.

Do you really think it's about the cost of the set? The Looney Tunes Golden/Spotlight collections have found a good solution for that.

Tardo317 02-24-08 04:04 PM

Are the shorts on Popeye the Sailor: 1938-1940 Volume Two "muttering" Popeye cartoons or did Fleischer do away with his comical gibberish after 1937? I can't get enough of those!

Big Worms 02-24-08 04:24 PM

Let's hope for another BB tin.

Oh, I think I can safely say that you will have the mutters well into 1943.
