doesn't it say how many episodes right on the lower front? what does it matter how many discs if you know how many episodes?

Is this an annoying mistake that we'd want to have fixed or something that might become a collectible in the future?

I just called and they said that they would be calling me back either later on tonight or tomorrow morning on how they are going to handle it? I hope so because I just bought it an hour ago at Best Buy.

I will be buying after work...dying to know from those who have seen...what does the alternate opening credits sequences look like? Are they not of the poop-deck, with the doors that open and close on the credits?

They start with the Paramount Logo replacing the TV "aap" logo, but then jump to the plain white "Popeye" TV title card, and then return to the original episode title & credits. The editor did not realize that the Popeye section needed to be replaced also.

As this is not a disc "Recall" but a replacement program, don't expect the stores to send them back for replacement copies. I would suggest purchasing the DVDs now. If you are unhappy with the alternate title sections, then call for a replacement. I would not wait in hopes the new discs will appear on the store shelves. That would require them to sell out of all existing copies in the distribution warehouses.

Most likely many viewers will not care about this, but historians will want the corrected discs.

Well, I have to sadly say I'm not that impressed with this. The first set seems far superior in both quality and "mutterings." The first set was much funnier, too. I sat through most of the shorts on this (which they're calling "episodes" now) and hardly broke a smile. Seems to have less Bluto, too, during these years. I skipped ahead to watch the two with Popeye's Poop-Deck Pappy, but those seemed inferior, too.

Did something change in the production department during these years? A change in writers, or animators?

Hmm. I may just pass on this. Like you, I love the first set and I figured Vol. 2 would be a no-brainer. But the little homework I have done for this set hasn't been real encouraging. I'm a big fan of Popeye vs. Bluto brawls, and it sounds like the focus on that conflict starts to taper off at this point.

I wonder how the cut-off points for the shorts on each volume are determined?

I just got a phone call and they are expecting to send out the repacement disc in 8-10 weeks with a prepaid envelope so you can send back the old one.

Yup, that's exactly how they played it with the Tom & Jerry replacements. Classy, this way you're never without the product.

That is nice of them, but I'm curious - what do they do with the old ones? I mean, I understand sending it in beforehand as proof-of-purchase, but it seems like a waste of postage to mail it back after the fact. Also, what if you don't send the old disc back? Do they bill you or do you have to give them a credit card number to initiate the whole replacement process?

They never got a credit card # from me. They got my name, address and phone number and that's it. So if I was to be dishonest and not send back the defective one, what would happen? I'm not going to, because I just need 1 disc that has the correct entrances on it.

Any more impressions on the content of this set? I'm still on the fence with Vol. 2.

Thanks for the information about the replacement disc. Just called a few minutes ago to request one for my set I just got from Barnes and Noble.

It's worth it just for Goonland, The Jeep, Bulldozing the Bull, Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, Wotta Nightmare, Hello How Am I?, and It's the Natural Thing to Do. There's a lot I don't recall seeing on TV, but those seven are gold. "Natural" is easily the most bizarre of all Popeye cartoons.

I'm about 10 "episodes" into the set and I'm digging it. There was a shift in these years - they shifted production from New York City to Florida, and the tone shifted as well. They ended up moving back to NYC. But while the tone is more slapstick than violent they're still quite good.

Another thing, was when Gus Wickie died (he was that great voice of Bluto from 1935-1938 - the guy with the deep, rich voice) they had a hard time coming up with an adequate replacement. They finally found someone they were happy with in the early 40's and he stuck around for quite a while. But for the years in between, Bluto was often missing.

Even so, this set has some rarely shown shorts, there have already been 2 or 3 that I don't remember ever seeing. I may have seen them 25 or 30 years ago, but I don't remember them.

The War time Popeye cartoons are pretty darned good, so set #3 should be really cool.

Some good feedback on the content, but I am still undecided on purchasing Vol. 2. The 'toons sound great for the most part, just don't know if I can part with money for the number of shorts included. What's the scoop on the Popeye and Friends series:

Is it as bad as the majority of folk say?

Was looking on ebay for a Popeye Vol. 1 Best Buy tin. Was shocked to see only one with an asking price of $120. Are people actually willing to pay that?

I finally received my replacement disc today! I had forgotten all about it. It took over 4 monthes to receive it. Anyone that is waiting looks like they are finally getting mailed out.

I got mine today as well. I completely forgot about it and completely forgot why I was getting it replaced in the first place. Oy.

Yeah I got mine in the mail today as well and now they want me to mail the old one back. Well the problem is that I don't know where I have Popeye Vol 2. Oh well.
