The Car ------> 5/08/08

Looks like Universal is re-releasing this long OOP gem the same day as MST3K:The Movie

Weird, wasn't this an Anchor Bay release?

Having been forced to live in Utah for one year, I will buy this to support my love for the car that runs over the people that live there.

Oh, thank god. I saw it at a used store the other day for 80 bucks and I was just leering at it.

I loved this movie as a kid. I'm sure it hasn't held up well (like Orca) but I'll pick it up for under $10.

Goddamn! Thank you Uni! I (foolishly) lagged, and missed, the AB release. This one will be added to my collection on release day. Great news.

Did Universal license any other titles to AB or was this a one off?

Several movies were licensed to AB. Some of the titles they licensed out:

Army of Darkness (the most famous example)
Where the Buffalo Roam
Repo Man
Two-Lane Blacktop

...and several others. In some cases there is no reissue as of yet, but in others superior editions (Repo Man has an SE and Two-Lane Blacktop just got the Criterion treatment) have been made. Unfortunately with the 371 AOD releases by AB, all of them beat the crap out of the in-print Universal disc (and HD version from what I've heard).

This upcoming releases of THE CAR and the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER movie has me hoping stuff like MATINEE (another long-out-of-print release) might not be too far behind. I watched it one last time about two weeks ago, then flipped it on ebay (but not before scanning the cover, which repro'd the original poster painting, just to be safe) since it feels increasingly likely that it'll turn up in the near future.

Was the GROUNDSTAR CONSPIRACY another Universal title released through Anchor Bay? Or was that Image, too? I have vague recollections of seeing that somewhere not long before it went out of print. Be nice to have a second chance at it.

I liked the HD Combo Disc in that it has the best picture quality you can get on AD, and I don't mean the HD-DVD side (I don't have an HD-DVD player). Universal, having done a new transfer for the hi-def side of the disc, also created a new anamorphic widescreen transfer for the SD side, and it blows away both Anchor Bay's and Universal's previous transfers by a mile. Colors are great and it's very nice. Of course, few will want to shell out $30 for an SD-DVD with no features but if you can find it used and not scratched for less or grab it in a BOGO then it's nice.

Universal probably licensed quite a few others on top of those already mentioned, of any studio they seem to be the best about licensing their films out to other companies (there are lots on Criterion too, like Dazed and Confused, Fear and Loathing, Videodrome, etc).

I just noticed that WB is re-releasing Macon County Line on 5/8 as well. Pretty good day for long neglected movies.

Wish they would put out Ode to Billy Joe along with it.
