Precisely.. and we got to admit.. there are really "real" peopl who bite such?

They found a niche in the rental market!

Why? Im pretty sure some of you here whenever renting a movie at your nearby Blockbuster or Hollywood video, you will always come up with a fellow customers who asks store associates if they happen to have this "movie" (which is currently out in theatres)...

Major example:

Well just wait until you see the Asylum's movie.... 100,000 BC (seriously)

The average joe ( or the dumb renters).. would easily bite on this as soon as the 10,000BC trailer pops out in general media (TV, Newspaper Ads, Billboards).. 100,000BC? wow!

Ayslum's marketing style, I guess is to answer this market.. and it seems to work brilliantly!

Well, ofcourse, negative criticism is innevitable especially to us who are that familiar and talk about it in messageboards like this.

You would think that these renters would learn to avoid anything with Asylum written on it, and that Asylum would come up with a new production company name for each release.

The production company means nothing to the average renter.

I saw some of their "War of the Worlds" with C.Thomas Howell it was OK but not great. They seem to be the big distributor for the Sci-Fi Channel movies.

[edit to add:]Someone has got to make those films that go in the $5 or less bargain bins.

This always baffles me. I understand that not everyone cares about movies in the same way we do, obviously this is a DVD-based site. But still, I don't understand how even the most casual movie watcher can't figure out the concept that a movie opening in theaters isn't (usually) going to be on DVD the same day. Or that the movie they saw advertised with Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise in those tv ads isn't the same movie that's sitting on the Blockbuster shelf with C Thomas Howell listed as its star, despite the similar title and artwork. I mean, if they are at the video store renting in first place you'd think they would at least have a *basic* idea of movie stars and theatrical-to-video release patterns.

When I was thirteen or so, I was with my grandmother and she bought me the new Ebert Movie Yearbook and as I was reading it, she asked me if it had Dante's Peak in it because she just saw it-- Dante's Peak having just been released theatrically the day before. These people exist DRG, they exist

Average Joes don't just try to buy movies that have just been released theatrically--they also try to buy movies that have never been on DVD before. I was browsing in a Suncoast video about 7 or 8 years ago and a guy came in and asked the clerk for the Star Wars trilogy. When the clerk told him it wasn't yet available on DVD, the guy flew into a rage and said the clerk was an idiot and he'd just go get it at Walmart. The clerk wished him luck as the guy stormed out of the store.

Back to the topic of Asylum studios: I'm gonna sound like a snob, but I think if you can't tell the difference between Monster and Cloverfield or AVP and Alien vs Hunter, then you deserve to get burned.

I remember this happening with the release of United 93. The same week United 93 hit theaters all hundred copies or so of Flight 93 were rented at Blockbuster.

Luckily, Flight 93 is an interesting and fairly moving documentary.

Flight 93, I believe, was an A&E original movie.

Oh wow...

This is the same company that once specialized in small independent films, and they had a tie-in with Hollywood Video that would exclusively carry their DVDs. They released some really good films back then (Chicks Man, Dill Scallion, Art House).

I'm even quoted on two of their DVD boxes. I can't believe this is the same company.

Hey, War of the Worlds 2 has Christopher Reid, "Kid" from Kid 'n Play! That trumps having Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg all by itself!

Hmmm, it appears you're right. I could have sworn I watched a documentary that basically pieced together every minute of the flight with interviews from the surviving family members intercut with actors portraying what was happening on the plane. What the hell did I watch?

I actually rather enjoyed "King of the Ants"
Me too, not one of Gordon's best but still a really good movie. George Wendt did a good job in it.

This may not be from Asylum, but they are also pushing the limit:

Sadly, ripping off comedies would seem too high-concept for The Asylum. They only seem intent on making sci-fi and horror ripoffs despite the fact that they don't have the budget to do anything with special effects.

That's hilarious- I'm gonna have to check that out. I call the 3 direct-to-video American Pie movies "Canadian Pie" since they were filmed in Canada (usually when a movie's made in Canada, it's because it's cheaper to do it there.)

My dad consistantly asks me to pick up movies on dvd weeks, if not days after they are released in the theater. no matter how many times i tell him there is a process, he doesn't understand. He also watches regular TV stretched to fit his widescreen HD and tells everyone how wonderful watching HDTV is, and before he had the widescreen TV 1-2 nights a week he would ask me to adjust the settings on his TV because while watching one of my DVDs the screen would "shrink" and he would have black bars at the top and bottom. No matter how many times i explained it to him, he would not understand. After i moved out, he called me to tell me some of his channels were messed up on the bedroom TV and he had called the cable company to complain and they were sceduling for a tech to come out (he was watching a channel showing widescreen programing on a standard tv).
These people exist, and sadly, I am their offspring. please dont hold it against me...

I've rented a few of them. Most sucked, but it was worthwhile to have on while reading something. No need to pay attention to plot, just look up and chuckle every time there is a loud noise.

I saw Transmorphers and War of the Worlds. As people may bash on them, they really aren't that bad. I've seen worse. I would also like to happily say there are at least 2 original things in Transmorphers.

This is actually a legit Aussie film called "48 Shades"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0476519/

Not a great film by any means but deserving of more than that horrible title and cover art

You're thinking of the 2005 Discovery Channel film "THE FLIGHT THAT FOUGHT BACK", not the A&E one called "FLIGHT 93". Two entirely different rip-offs - oops, I mean "films".

Plan Bee has been out since October of last year and is not done by The Asylum. Rather it was released by Allumination Filmworks.
