MST3K Library Changing Hands

Apparently Shout! Factory is taking over Mystery Science Theater 3000 on DVD.

The series lasted 11 seasons and includes 198 episodes, all of which are ultimately bound for both DVD and digital distribution through Shout! Factory.
Given the fate of set 10, I'm a little skeptical that we'll see every episode on DVD, but if they make an effort to put out more, faster, I'll be happy.

Cameron 01-23-08 09:24 PM

could be great news, but they still have to secure all of the movies for distribution

Dane Marvin 01-23-08 09:31 PM

WOW. Shout! puts out great products. This could be very good news for fans like myself. Huge news...

tylergfoster 01-23-08 09:33 PM

Oh god. If Shout! Factory makes good on putting every movie on DVD I can die a happy death.

MasterofDVD 01-23-08 09:46 PM

I'm hoping that they see a demand for re-releasing the previous sets in the near future. I just never got around to buying the previous sets and by the time I was ready it was hard to find a number of the ones that had been put out.

darkside 01-23-08 09:53 PM

This is great news. Shout factory puts a lot more effort into their releases.

slappy 01-23-08 09:53 PM

Hmmm... interesting...

All sorts of MST3K news has been popping up as of late... and I'm intrigued.

I didn't realize until just now (from reading Shout! Factory's wikipedia entry) that so many former Rhino executives now work there.

Seems like a good fit... I guess time will tell.

darkside 01-23-08 10:03 PM

The weird thing is Best Brains killed Mike Nelson's deal with Rhino to do the Film Crew DVDs and he had to take the project to Shout Factory two years later to get them released. Now they are moving to Shout Factory as well. Weird.

You never know, they COULD work wonders in the "rights" department. After all, they managed to keep the musical acts in the SCTV episodes...

milo bloom 01-23-08 10:58 PM

I have every official DVD release so far, and I hope Shout! keeps folks like me in mind and doesn't force us to buy a bunch of double dips.

The Monkees 01-24-08 01:40 AM

I'm very happy about this. I've been wanting to buy these sets for a while now. I hope there are more episodes per set and a lower price, that's all I ask for.

MTRodaba2468 01-24-08 01:55 AM

Fantastic.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to feel about this until they give us some idea of what they're going to do.

starman9000 01-24-08 06:39 AM

I only have a few of the original sets and a bunch of the singles, but I wouldn't mind double dipping if they came in something closer to season sets.

DVD Giant 01-24-08 09:02 AM

Season sets would be mightly costly...but still worth it. Like mentioned above, I have every official release aswell.

Ms. M 01-24-08 09:15 AM

This will hopefully be good news for MST3K fans, many of whom were displeased with the Rhino releases. There are still a lot of releases they could put out that are public domain or could be easily acquired. One fan put out an extensive list of which episodes could be released that can be seen here (http://forrestcrow.proboards47.com/i...ad=1152828151), though it was designed with some thought for Rhino's contacts.

The thread you requested does not exist! Where has this list gone?

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi 01-24-08 10:11 AM

Just because some movies are public domain doesn't mean they have the rights to use them. Music could have copyrighted or they may have used a different version of the film, like a tv version, which might not be public domain.

Dane Marvin 01-24-08 10:55 AM

My hope is that Shout! continues to release sets -- but for a cheaper price. And perhaps releases them more frequently/consistently than Rhino did. It's kind of scary to think about all the possible types of releases they could do. I certainly don't want to re-buy anything.

DVD Giant 01-24-08 11:47 AM

It's already bad enough that I have to re-buy set 10.2 for the extra episode.

majorjoe23 01-24-08 12:18 PM

You don't have to rebuy 10.2, Rhino announced they would be selling it seperately through their website. Of course, that was before this was announced. Who knows if it changes anything.

EDIT: It's still on, with a release date of Feb. 5 through Rhino's website.

Dane Marvin 01-24-08 01:32 PM

Yep, you don't have to buy Vol 10.2 just to get The Giant Gila Monster. Although I will be buying the whole set because I sold my Vol 10 on e-bay for $180 last year. I sure am glad I did that now.

Same here. Could be good. Could be bad. Could be more of the same.

Was it this post?

Hopefully, Shout continues the 4 movie sets, preferably in similar looking packaging (although I wouldn't mind a switch to individual slim cases).

onebyone 01-24-08 05:06 PM

Has anyone seen The Giant Gila Monster solo disc up for preorder anywhere?

It's going to be exclusive through Rhino's website. Keep your eye open!

majorjoe23 01-24-08 05:49 PM

It will be available Feb. 5, only through Rhino's website.

mrpeavey 01-24-08 06:18 PM

I'm a great fan of the series, but not of Rhino's sets. I really liked the singles, especially with the movie itself as a separate feature. Plus, you can arrange the episodes by original release date, which I would prefer to do.

onebyone 01-25-08 12:03 AM

Thanks for the update on Gila. I will keep refreshing rhino's site until then.

mgdeals 01-25-08 02:24 AM

What is it with rhino and losing licenses? GI JOE, transformers, and now this... I see a pattern forming.

I'm not sure what to think about this news. I love the show, but have already spent over $350 for the current sets, which is not even a quarter of the entire library. Season sets would be what most people want, but those would have to be huge sets. The current sets were already pricey as is, so hopefully they can get it well below $10 per movie if they do. My guess is they will release complete seasons, split into multiple volumes. I've never seen a new company that gains the rights continue an unfinished series on DVD in the same format as the previous rights owner, have you?

I hope not, but after they did something similar with the Twilight Zone I suppose it's not impossible. But at the very least our oop box sets will still retain their value!

I would love to see that myself. I wish I could print covers for my current boxset discs, but I simply cannot get that process figured out.

Plus, it will be easier to come up with the money to buy individual discs than the boxsets.

Not to go too far off topic, but Memorex makes a free application to create DVD covers and you do not need to be an expert.

I grabbed it a few days ago for DVD's from DAP Central and it works very well. Hope that helps.

I'll take a look, thanks.

redskull 01-25-08 12:05 PM

I never much cared for Rhino's random, scattershot release schedule, but after buying all 12 volumes I would be VERY upset if Shout decided to put out season sets and I had to buy the Rhino releases all over again.

I agree, I have all the season sets (except I missed #9, darn it) and all the single releases, and would hate to have to re-buy episodes.

But I don't think we have to worry about season sets, they'll be cost prohibitive, and a bit large. I think they'll either go to individual release (my choice), or keep a similar set format.

majorjoe23 01-25-08 12:59 PM

If they did one new release a month, I would be happy.

macnorton 01-25-08 01:04 PM

I don't own any of these yet, but I am a fan and i have no problem with the "random" releases. I, like everyone else, would prefer them cheaper and more frequent.

Zbu 01-25-08 01:43 PM

I'm hoping they can finally take a more active role in getting most MST3Ks out and going. I'm pretty sure something can be done with the Sandy Frank edits now that the original copyright holders own it.

tylergfoster 01-25-08 08:19 PM

I say Shout! Factory does both season sets and individuals of said season sets. It would be the way to please everyone. I have yet to purchase an MST3K DVD due to the generally prohibitive price, and so if they did it this way I could pick up the seasons while those who bought the Rhino DVDs could just pick and choose.
