It's going to be exclusive through Rhino's website. Keep your eye open!

majorjoe23 01-24-08 05:49 PM

It will be available Feb. 5, only through Rhino's website.

I'm a great fan of the series, but not of Rhino's sets. I really liked the singles, especially with the movie itself as a separate feature. Plus, you can arrange the episodes by original release date, which I would prefer to do.

onebyone 01-25-08 12:03 AM

Thanks for the update on Gila. I will keep refreshing rhino's site until then.

mgdeals 01-25-08 02:24 AM

What is it with rhino and losing licenses? GI JOE, transformers, and now this... I see a pattern forming.

I'm not sure what to think about this news. I love the show, but have already spent over $350 for the current sets, which is not even a quarter of the entire library. Season sets would be what most people want, but those would have to be huge sets. The current sets were already pricey as is, so hopefully they can get it well below $10 per movie if they do. My guess is they will release complete seasons, split into multiple volumes. I've never seen a new company that gains the rights continue an unfinished series on DVD in the same format as the previous rights owner, have you?

I hope not, but after they did something similar with the Twilight Zone I suppose it's not impossible. But at the very least our oop box sets will still retain their value!

I would love to see that myself. I wish I could print covers for my current boxset discs, but I simply cannot get that process figured out.

Plus, it will be easier to come up with the money to buy individual discs than the boxsets.

Not to go too far off topic, but Memorex makes a free application to create DVD covers and you do not need to be an expert.

I grabbed it a few days ago for DVD's from DAP Central and it works very well. Hope that helps.

I'll take a look, thanks.

I never much cared for Rhino's random, scattershot release schedule, but after buying all 12 volumes I would be VERY upset if Shout decided to put out season sets and I had to buy the Rhino releases all over again.

I agree, I have all the season sets (except I missed #9, darn it) and all the single releases, and would hate to have to re-buy episodes.

But I don't think we have to worry about season sets, they'll be cost prohibitive, and a bit large. I think they'll either go to individual release (my choice), or keep a similar set format.

majorjoe23 01-25-08 12:59 PM

If they did one new release a month, I would be happy.

macnorton 01-25-08 01:04 PM

I don't own any of these yet, but I am a fan and i have no problem with the "random" releases. I, like everyone else, would prefer them cheaper and more frequent.

Zbu 01-25-08 01:43 PM

I'm hoping they can finally take a more active role in getting most MST3Ks out and going. I'm pretty sure something can be done with the Sandy Frank edits now that the original copyright holders own it.

tylergfoster 01-25-08 08:19 PM

I say Shout! Factory does both season sets and individuals of said season sets. It would be the way to please everyone. I have yet to purchase an MST3K DVD due to the generally prohibitive price, and so if they did it this way I could pick up the seasons while those who bought the Rhino DVDs could just pick and choose.

It's up now. Here's the dvdtalk thread, and the direct Rhino link.

Yeah, I agree I'm in the same situation.

darkside 01-31-08 11:25 PM

Why does anything think Shout Factory taking over solves any of the licensing issues? I still see no way they can do complete season sets without it costing hundreds of dollars and that is only if they can get access to things like the Sandy Frank films which seems unlikely.

I would prefer individual episode releases, but I also hope they don't start rereleasing all the Rhino episodes.

If I recall correctly, Shout has an easier time getting licensing fees reduced than any other studio. I don't know the reason why but in the past shows like Freaks & Geeks and also My So-Called Life had a lot of music to clear and Shout was able to.

And I suppose complete seasons sets will be at a cheap price?...

With the Rhino sets being $35 to $40 for four feature length episodes... sounds pretty unreasonably priced to me...

I don't know if it has to do with the cost of the fees, so much. I think it's more that as a smaller, "hungrier" studio, Shout is more driven to give these projects the proper treatment, and with a background consisting almost entirely in licensing and reissuing existing product, they're just more familiar and adept with the process.

What would you have them do then for the movies that are already out there (and many out of print).

MovieExchange 02-02-08 01:15 AM

I have all the Rhino releases - all the single DVD's and the volume sets up through 7. Then after getting those I found someone with... let's say less than legal copies of everything Rhino hadn't released, with the exception of about half of the season MST was a public access show. I would gladly re-purchase everything to get well-made season sets.

Shout got us Freaks And Geeks & My So-Called Life with all the original music intact, and got the majority of the rights for SCTV cleared as well. I think they'll be likely to get the majority of the rights issues taken care of.
