I've really only purposefully updated two titles (not counting the ones that I got free with the player of which I had no choice in the matter). My criteria would be a significant improvement in AV quality and if the film is a huge favorite of mine. However, I also consider whether or not the DVD I have of the same film is some sort of limited edition that I don't like to handle very often (limited packaging, etc.). Silly, I know, but still a small factor for me.

Both sides should have worked it out when there was still time, and it's a shame that greed (from both sides) won out.
For some reason, I refuse to buy the PS3. I'm not a big video game player, but I do like sports games, thus why I bought the PS2 when it was released. The PS3 has had one messy release, however. Like I mentioned earlier, PS3 has been a big advertisement for Blu-Ray. Some PS3 games run slower than the same game that's on the Xbox 360, the online is messy to say the least, and the menu screen isn't that good, IMO. It is a great Blu-Ray disc player, and it up-converts SD DVDs beautifully, but it was supposed to be the next generatation gaming system, not the next generation movie player.

Like most have said, I only plan to upgrade my favorite films. I'm not quite ready to dive completely into HD. I'm not crazy about the packaging and they don't get all those cool special editions. I have bought a few Blu-Rays, but I don't get the same feeling of buying a good 'ole SD DVD. Not mention some of the things I have on SD DVD will probably never see an HD release. Right now it doesn't look like much other than mainstream Hollywood releases are getting the HD treatment. That will prbably change, but I don't see it in the near future. I know it takes time to get a format going and that's why I'm pretty good with my SD DVDs. Right now

If a Blu-ray becomes available, I upgrade, every time. It's as simple as that.
Sure, I might wait around for a BOGO or other sale, but the upgrade is inevitable.
As for HD DVD, I consider it to be irrelevant, and will continue to patiently wait for its exclusive titles to come to Blu-ray.

I only upgrade SD's to HD if the PQ is vastly improved or there are new special features not available on my SD, and usually this is only for films that I REALLY like. I'm not going to upgrade something I only marginally like because there is an HD version out there. I only upgrade SD to a newer SD if the newest one either is a new cut, has lots of deleted/alt footage or comes in some new bad-ass package that I can't resist.
