If those are my only two options, I'll take the second one. All my reviews implicitly include the following disclaimers provided earlier:

Disclaimer #1: I don't know you and I don't know whether you actually want to see the opinions of every random person that makes their way to this thread or you simply want people to tell you that they share your tastes, but I'm going to assume you want my honest opinion.

Disclaimer #2: Of course all that is just my opinion, and you're entitled to your own opinion, and who do I think I am anyway, and what about me owning X, Y, and Z titles that suck ass, and yada, yada, yada, ad infinitum . . .

who would have thought this thread would have lasted this long. i guess if people keep coming in here and asking for people to rate thier collection it will go on for a while.

Everybody calm down, it's not that big of deal if somebody on the net bothers you I can't imagine your guys temper in real life. Calm down.

The Infidel 11-24-07 01:17 PM

You obviously haven't been here very long if you think what you've seen here is bad temper.

I don't think anyone's upset here, or at least not anymore upset than your girlfriend, cguardado, was in her first post.

As you all have proved, every person has a different taste, and for this particular subject, in movies. What I may like and what THFM may like will more than likely be completely different. Maybe I think my movie collection is better than his. But does that give me the right to completely put him down? No, not at all. Yes, you may argue that he asked for his collection to be rated in the first place. But he did not ask for people to talk down to him. This is supposed to be a site discussing movies right? At least we know that everyone here has that common hobby. But why turn a simple question into a war against THFM? Especially you, Yakuza Bengoshi. What gives you the right to think your collection is the best? I honestly didn't like it at all, but hey whatever floats your boat right? Just because I didn't like it doesn't mean I get to put you down for it. I also don't like your "I'm better then everyone else" attitude. Its pretty sad that you'd rather put some random person down on the internet then do something more productive with your time.

No harm done.

Most of us are sheep in real life. Throw us a patch of grass, and we'll rub on yah with love.

At first I was but I got over it. It's kind of funny to me now. I don't know how one question turned into 9 pages filled with replies.

This thread FTL.

dcrw6 11-24-07 05:16 PM

You guys can rate mine if you want. I know the quality of movies I have, but I love them and I'm proud of them. I'm just curious what comments I'll get. lol

islandclaws 11-24-07 05:35 PM

dcrw6, you got a nice collection there. I see you're a horror fiend like myself. I'll go B/B+ on yours. I would have given you an A- but you have a plethora of 2000-era DTV horror flicks, many of which are total pieces of crap. But from a horror completeist's standpoint I can understand why you might have bought them.

Ok, my turn... rate away.

Matt.train 11-24-07 06:35 PM

so what do you guys think of mine.

180 out of 672, not bad I'd say!

slabinskia 11-24-07 07:23 PM

Just for fun, here is my collection on display for everyone.

To keep with the general theme of the responses:

1) standard collection
2) you like to crimp .. munich, master and commander, memento .. all standard releases. (but you get a pass for picking up the 2D release of Jarhead!!)
3) no foreign films .. I'll probably get written up for this one, but you must be a borderline racist.
4) on the yakuza bengoshi scale, you'd probably get a D .. maybe less for your taste.

Oh please, please do me next!!!! :)

BTW, I am just joking .... but really, you could use some pre-60's and international influences ....... as we could all, I'm certain.

This is really about what you want.

I know the quality of movies I have,
Then I don't need to say anything.

but I love them and I'm proud of them.
That's all that really matters.

Oh, if you insist, I’ll give one comment: At least you live in one of the coolest small cities in North America so you don’t actually have to stay home and watch that stuff.

There’s a little good, and lots of bland and bad there. You do know, for example, that just because you liked Battle Royale doesn’t mean you have to buy Battle Royale II right? I’d rate your collection a D-, but I don’t watch my DVDs stoned so don’t go by my opinion.

Did you actually like Band of Outsiders or did you buy it because Tarantino cites it as an influence, and were ultimately disappointed?

You got six times as many romcoms as foreign films, and I bet you don’t even label yourself a romcom fan though I’m sure they’re a good palette cleanser after a long day of watching men in their underwear hold each other.

Lot of good titles there, though as you said too light on the classics I’d give your collection an A- for contemporary Asian film (too light on the arthouse releases), and a B- overall. By the way, I also think you need to reexamine the definition of “samurai” I don't think it means what you think it means.

EDIT: Damn, I just now looked at the second link of films. I stand corrected. I'd give your collection an A for Asian film generally, and a A- overall. Very nice! I'm envious of a lot of it. Got any recommendations for titles I should see?

.

That is a decent question, but not only does he site it as an influence but he named his (several others) production company after it. there are a few other french pieces in there: Breathless, wages of fear, and Shoot the piano player (Which is one of my favorites but it is not in DVDAF daatabase). Riffifi got misplaced a while back.

No, I did not buy it because of Quentin. There was life before Quentin:).

So whats up with the Warhol pieces?

And where are your french noir pieces?

thanks for the link for Shoot the Piano player. Maybe it was because i was only looking in region 1.

I've seen most of Melville and Clouzot's work and was not especially impressed with their film noir overall. Who else were you including in that category? Even "great" American film noir is a bit hit or miss for me.

Ok, I was in the art industry for 10 years and dealt with Warhol art work and many other pop and neo-pop artists. just curious.

You have a decent amount of american noir, only one Dassin, just saw all the american.

You have the american version of insomnia but did not see the orignal.

I saw Dassin's Night and the City and thought it was great, and Rififi, very good, but I don't own either.

I haven't seen enough of either, especially Goddard, to form a firm judgment, but I've found the younger French New Wave directors and their followers to be more my style.

I haven't watched the American remake yet, but I have seen the original (it's in my watched list under "very good"). However, I'm not a big fan of police procedurals generally.

Haven't seen it yet, but it's somewhere on my Netflix queue.

Matt.train 11-25-07 05:06 PM

I have Dead Man, and enjoy it very much. I recently purchased the Dead Man (BFI Modern Classics) study, but haven't read it yet. I haven't seen Fishing with John.
