Please rate my humble little collection of dvds that I scrapped up...;)

It isn't a bad start...again I am biased because there is a lot of overlap in my collection. That is a good B there bud.

Also I am going to give you an A- for your animation. There is a lot of cool Japanese films in there and anyone who has Triplets in their collection is Ok by me.

I'm not going to rate it because obviously we have different tastes, but I was suprised at the eclectic mix you have there.

I'll rate your collection as A-, only because I would like to see you narrow it down to under 300 DVDs (I have about 600 DVDs, but I narrowed my main ones to under 300). It's hard to judge a collection when someone has everything!
You basically have a lot of older films than I do. I love your foreign DVD collection though...

Hey, for me the rating is secondary(go ahead and do so....), what I'm looking for is suggestions on what I haven't delved into yet. For instance..I KNOW I'm missing some film noir gems...but am not sure where to start...

Just way to mainstream for my taste & IMO you have a lot of really questionable stuff. I mean, all the Bring it On Movies? Chuck & Larry? Paulie? Then Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama, which is so out of place in a mostly family oriented colelctoin.

You do have some solid, classic films but not many.

I would highlly recommend you get the first Film Noir Classic Collection, & watch Out of the Past first. Or rent, if not blind buy Ace in the Hole, it seems to be the movie for me, that works the most when I try to get friends into noir.

El Cid seems like a great classic you may enjoy & a great DVD release.

The recent Sabrina re-release is fantastic, try some more classic romantic comedies, also Love Actually seems like something you may like, it's actually a really good movie. Beautiful Girls also.

And you desperately need some Hitchcock in your collection.

So many acidic one-liners in that one. "I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons."

Your collection completely rules.

I didn't look through the whole thing, so maybe you have these, but I didn't notice them & was surprised that you didn't seem to have them.

Elevator to the Gallows, one of my all-time favs & the best film score pretty much ever.

Touchez pas au grisbi - Jean Gabin so completely rules in this movie. Jacques Becker's only pure noir, it's fantastic.

The Silent Partner - An awesome forgotten neo-noir from the late 70s. Stars Eliot Gould who is fantastic as a mopey smuck who gets in way over his head in a robbery scame. Such a great crime screenplay

I have them both - there's a separate sub-section for Criterions. I wish Elevator had come with a CD of the score, a la Anchor Bay with Repo Man and Suspiria.

I've been meaning to check this one out for a while - it's on my wish list.

well there's some similarities but I think I'm a bit more tolerant of uneventful films whereas you're a bit more tolerant of mainstream comedies :)

as for the size, the problem is there's many films that I dont like overall but love little parts/scenes/aspects of.

and Welles' The Stranger would also fit your collection.

"A" for quantity, but "C-" overall (low grade for being an exact replica of what would be found if I was browsing through Blockbuster Video)

Your collection is nearly identical to mine. As I said earlier in this thread, B+ (I gave mine a B-, which in retrospect was probably a little lower than it should be), room for improvement (like mine) in a few areas, but it is a really good collection.

Cmon Blockbuster? I dont think Blockbuster carries much by Kieslowski or Rohmer. Netflix maybe. And looking at yours we have a lot of the same titles. Except I have no interest in Animated stuff or Anime like you do.

All the Blockbusters i've visited carry all the Criterions (maybe not Salo or Sweet Movie). Criterion doesn't make a difference to me anyway. I'm more impressed with someone who owns some Criterion dvds rather than someone who has all the Criterion dvds, because someone who owns all of them is just buying them for the label...

We do have a lot of the same titles, that's why I would grade my collection in the "C"s as well. Yes, I have a lot of animation and foreign dvds, but I wish I could get my DVD collection down to less than 100 (I have over 600 DVDs). I'm all for quality over quantity.

Some people are impressed and give high grades for the "library-type" DVD collection (quantity over quality). While others like me are more impressed with small DVD collections with quality, non-typical films in their DVD collection.

A DVDtalker with a perfect DVD collection is someone like PRO-BASS, GIGGLES, or GILES...

I totally agree with that you said about Criterion. I in nooooooooo way own ALL criterions. I dont even think I have 75. People who buy the entire collection are ridiculous. A lot of those movies just suck.

I do wish my collection was smaller. But sometimes I get the mentality of "eh its only 3 bucks." So I just buy and buy and buy. And then I look at some of the piles of unwatched stuff and Im disgusted with myself. Haha.

I guess it's my turn. I'll just jot down some thoughts as I scroll through:

-Apocalypse Now! Great film, great DVD
-Nooo! You have the Assault on Precinct 13 remake but not the original?! (I'm a stickler about inferior remakes)
-I'm really not a fan of most of these Hollywood comedies & action movies
-Children of Men, best film of 2006 IMO
-Nooooo! As a HUGE fan of the original Dawn of the Dead (and Romero's zombie films), to only have the remake is heresy! (then again, I consider it heresy to own the remake period, haha)
-What in god's name possessed you to purchase Gigli?
-Some good stuff from Spielberg & Scorsese
-No Country For Old Men. Masterpiece.
-*ahem* Only the Psycho remake?
-Shaun of the Dead rules

Your collection reminds me of a friend I used to have. He shared some really good taste, but he also had lots of comedies I found horrible, and couldn't fathom why he thought Saving Silverman the funniest movie ever made.
