I go with "A". It's the only one that requires participants actually watch all the movies. Commentaries are really just time-passers rather than actually "taking in" a movie, anyway. If it's a movie that you can only get through with the commentary (because you've seen it 100 times, or the movie is too awful), then simply choose another movie. For something irresistible, like a Joe Bob Briggs, you get to watch the movie then get some credit for the time spent with the commentary on a subsequent viewing. Commentaries are meant to be supplemental. You'd never watch a commentary on the first viewing of a film, so they really don't stand on their own. Commentary only is only half a movie. We should respect the movies.

caligulathegod 08-31-08 12:33 AM

Oh, and what did you mean by last minute? We still have a month left on my calendar.

The Monkees 08-31-08 01:41 AM

I'm going to go with C as well, I don't normally watch commentaries very often anymore, but sometimes I do.

RagingBull80 08-31-08 04:02 AM

I say C.

Doc Moonlight 08-31-08 07:58 AM

I guess I'll go with A, although I don't plan to watch a lot of movies with commentaries anyway.

Shack 08-31-08 09:33 AM

I'll go with C. Mostly so I can watch some MST3K.

Dimension X 08-31-08 09:53 AM

I'll go with B if the with or without commentary rule still applies. Otherwise I'll say C so any given movie can only be counted once.

Edit; Okay, I went back and reread this post:

So my choice is B.

I can because otherwise I'm not paying attention to it.

I vote C because I'm planning on watching Cloverfield with the Rifftrax commentary. This way I get the movie audio and the commentary and there's no way I'd watch that movie on it's own. I don't plan on watching many, if any, but if I do get into some I don't want to hit some odd limit where they magically stop counting.

Rifftrax would be the only commentaries I would be listening to, if any.

A Star Trek: New Voyages - World Enough and Tim
Dark Water
Beowulf

Next
300
A couple of Star Trek movies I don't remember the names of because they were just that good
Jurassic Park

Ditto.

Numes 08-31-08 10:46 AM

I would vote for A. It is important to me to listen to the commentary shortly after I view the film, otherwise I find myself trying to listen to the dialog or watch the film again instead of listening to the commentary. In any case, I will listen to the commentary regardless of what the vote is.

Mister Peepers - I can't possibly imagine listening to the commentary upon first viewing of a movie/show. That defeats the whole purpose of the commentary. If you don't want to watch the movie/show first, then don't watch it at all.

Darth Maher 08-31-08 10:49 AM

I vote for D. No commentaries. :D

If watching a Halloween TV special doesn't count for anything, neither should watching a movie with commentary.

I can't imagine ruining my first viewing of Carpenter's Halloween that way (from that list I assume you "Rifftraxed" these movies). That's just sad.

I'm sorry but I like Rifftrax and there's also no way I'd watch Greys Anatomy or Brittney Spear's Crossroads on it's own. I'll save that pleasure for you :)

Technically, the first version I ever watched was the TV version so it's not as bad.

Will this movie count as well

Well like it has been said this is the Horror MOVIE Challenge. A movie with a commentary is still a movie. It's like having someone sitting in the room talking while you're watching the movie.

caligulathegod 08-31-08 02:55 PM

I assume with RiffTrax one still has the regular sound up, too, and can follow the plot just like with MST3K.

Let me rephrase (because I just knew someone would be crazy enough to actually do it): A reasonable person would not be expected to watch the commentary first. If you watch the commentary first for a film you've never seen, then you are doing it wrong. Half the commentaries I've listened to the participants spontaneously and specifically tell you to watch the film first or state they they assume you have watched the film first. It is a profound disrespect for the film and also a disservice to the viewer to watch a film the first time like that. I'm not talking about buying a DVD of a movie you've already seen at the theater or on TV and watching the commentary first; I've done that. I'm talking virgin viewing.

(Was Heroes the Henry Winkler, Sally Field movie or the TV show?)

Edit: I just read the post again. Were you considering RiffTrax as commentaries when you listed those movies? I'm not sure I count those as true commentaries. I'm talking regulat filmmaker/cast commentaries where they blather on about the filming that day or how much they enjoyed working with so-and-so, or even the "film-school-in-a-can" guys. MST3K doesn't prevent you from hearing most of the dialog, sound effects and music while telling you behind the scenes anecdotes.

I just meant we usually have matters concerning the rules finalized by the time I post the thread. It's obviously not a big deal - I'll carry the poll over to the new thread tomorrow and keep it going for a couple or so weeks.

Wicked

Yes, it most certainly will:

The trailer for Wicked Pictures adult horror movie, The Wicked.

I'm betting that's a movie you can't go to the IMDB for to check its genre classification.

Thank you. Now that we've cleared that up... :)

It was the TV show Heroes.

Rifftrax is pretty much MST3K without the skits or the people at the bottom of the screen, you get the movie audio and the jokes.

Normal commentaries aren't something I've ever watched first.

I'm voting C. I don't watch commentaries either but if someone watches the whole movie with commentaries there isn't a problem with me.

You post the thread on September 1st? I always thought the thread didn't go up until October 1st. Shows how much I know.

I'm getting pumped for the challenge.
