"Peanuts"
It’s your new studio, Charlie Brown. Warner Home Video has signed an exclusive worldwide home video distribution deal for the “Peanuts” library of more than 50 TV specials, with has rested with Paramount Home Entertainment for more than a decade.
Warner also will create direct-to-video features based on the “Peanuts” comic strip for release under the Warner Premiere label, along with short-form original programming for digital distribution.
The multiyear deal was made with United Media, Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, and Lee Mendelson Film Productions.
“We think it is a perennial brand, and we see consistent sales throughout the year on it,” said Jeff Brown, senior VP and GM of television and franchise product for Warner Home Video. “In addition, we have positioned ourselves as a leader in classic animation, from Looneytoons and DC Comics to our recent acquisition of Popeye.”
Indeed, Warner is considered a leader in the field of classic animation, with a line of critically hailed collector sets of classic cartoons such as “Looney Tunes,” “Huckleberry Hound,” “Tom & Jerry,” “Scooby-Doo,” “Yogi Bear” and “The Flintstones.”
Brown outlined a four-pronged initiative for the Peanuts brand.
The handful of popular classics long available on DVD and videocassette, mostly seasonal specials like “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” will be remastered and released on DVD with newly created bonus features and new collectable packaging. First up is “Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown,” due Jan. 15, 2008, followed Feb. 26 by “It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown.”
“We’re applying the same strategy we did with ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas,’ which yielded tremendous results at retail,” Brown said.
Other “Peanuts” programs that aren’t as familiar will be packaged in “golden collection” sets similar to what Warner has done with its “Looney Tunes” library.
“These will be for the core collector,” Brown said. “Much of this content has never been out before on DVD.”
Warner also will produce original “Peanuts” features for home video release under the studio’s Warner Premiere label, Brown said.
“We have no announcement date yet,” he said, “but it’s already been initiated. This will be a high priority.”
Lastly, Warner also will create original short-form content for digital distribution through wireless, electronic sellthrough and video-on-demand platforms.
“We believe that since this product originated in comic strip form, there are many applications for digital media,” Brown said. “This was one of the key points in the deal — the rights holders felt there were some digital applications, particularly in short-form, that had yet to be exploited.”
Jeanne Schulz, widow of the late cartoonist who created “Peanuts,” has high hopes for the new distribution deal with Warner.
“As we continue our efforts to maintain the integrity of my husband Charles Schulz’s work, partnership with Warner Home Video was the logical choice,” she said. “After meeting the Warner creative team, it’s clear that they have an understanding and respected dedication to classic animation, which we think will make them a great distribution home for ‘Peanuts.’”
Doug Stern, president and CEO of United Media, praised the Warner video unit’s “enormous global reach, creative foresight, marketing expertise, as well as its ability to understand classic properties.”

I assume this doesn't include the four Cinema Center Films/CBS and Paramount theatrical features? (A Boy Named Charlie Brown, Snoopy Come Home, Race For Your Life Charlie Brown, and Bon Voyage Charlie Brown)

How exciting! We might actually see some decent special features. I would love to see the commercial bumpers (if there were any) and perhaps a retrospective with the original child actors. Similar to the Gold Collection, perhaps we might even see isolated scores from the shows!

Actually, since I purchased a boxset of the three big holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) years ago, I haven't seen much of these around and the ones I did, didn't have many features on them. Here's to hoping for some packed DVDs and not 30 minutes on a 3 hour DVD.

Yeah this does sound cool. I hope they finally release You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. A Broadway musical at one point but turned into an animated film too.

I loved that as a kid and would love to own the DVD of that!

Maybe I'm missing something, but what is there to censor in Peanuts cartoons?
There are some specials I haven't seen in years, or were seldom rerun. One that sticks out in my mind is one where Lucy sprays music out of an aerosol can. As for commercial bumpers, they featured entire commercials for Dolly Madison snack cakes with the Peanuts characters.

It's available in Region 2, though, if you absolutely can't wait any longer...

I wish they'd re-release the Flashbeagle soundtrack on CD. My audio tape warbles in and out, probably because I played it a thousand times as a kid. I think I could probably sing all 10-12 songs all the way through from memory.

That would suck if this doesn't include Race for Your Life etc.

Great news! I have a shelf full of original VHS releases of Peanuts stuff that I'd love to replace with clean DVD versions.
(any clue WHAT could possibly be censored in these, since you all are talking about it? I can't remember anything that could be considered controversial, but then again this is WB we're talking about...)

I swear that if WB garbles what they say, I'm going to call and demand that they release them right.
I'd guess WB will be out of business by then due to the 2 cartoons that aren't in the Tom and Jerry set.
