El Cid - 1/29/08?

Previously mentioned in conjunction with the Weinstein Company's announcement of three specialist labels earlier this year (along with several other titles)...
The first release from Miriam will be 1961 film El Cid, which has not yet streeted on DVD. El Cid stars Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren and explores Spanish hero Rodrigo Diaz. Others in the Miriam pipeline are Fall of the Roman Empire with Loren, 55 Days at Peking with Heston and Circus World with John Wayne.

Additionally slated for the label are Pedro Almodovar’s Dark Habits and What Have I Done to Deserve This? and Akira Kurosawa’s Madadayo.
Now mentioned by Movies Unlimited...
One of the films most requested at Movies Unlimited, El Cid (1961), the epic produced by Samuel Bronston and directed by Anthony Mann, finally lands on DVD in two different versions with a spectacular new transfer. Charlton Heston plays the title role of Rodrigo Diaz, a disgraced Castilian knight who leads the Spanish people against the invading Moors from North Africa in 1060. Sophia Loren, Raf Vallone, and Herbert Lom also star in this spectacle that boasts gorgeous scenery (to go with gorgeous Sophia), thrilling battle scenes, and a sweeping historical story. There are a pair of two-disc sets on the way: El Cid (Deluxe Edition), with interviews, commentary, trailers, and more, and El Cid (Limited Collector’s Edition), with all the bells and whistles, plus a special book.
and listing on Amazon for January 29th, 2008. I imagine full details will be emerging within the next month.

(Thanks to the Criterion forum for the info)

Hopefully both will be available next year.

This is very good news.

By now, El Cid and Fall of the Roman Empire are the two main reasons I didn't part with my laserdisc player. The other reason is the Turner colourized version of King Kong (1933), which will probably never be transferred on DVD for reasons of political correctness.

I will be glad to replace El Cid with a version that doesn't have eye-watering aliasing and rather tired colours. Same for Fall of the Roman Empire. 55 Days at Peking, although not as memorable a film, will certainly be a welcome addition to my collection.

I'll probably pick up El Cid. Now maybe someone will release Taras Bulba, which has been my "most wanted on DVD" for a little while now.

Are you talking about the Criterion laserdisc? I seem to remember it looked pretty good, and it was mastered from the restored film that Mirimax had put into limited theatrical release....

Yes, the Criterion. And, come to think of it, the aliasing wasn't nearly as bad as The Fall of the Roman Empire with its thousands of rippling marble steps in the Roman forum scenes. But the fact remains that the limited definition + the very very widescreen format + the fact that there were no anamorphics in those days = a very tiring experience. But the stereo surround sound was gorgeous (on both films)!

I'd been in for that. And I'm still waiting for both The Black Shield of Falworth and Sign of the Pagan.

Yes, the limitations of the format would be a factor here for sure. FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE and 55 DAY AT PEKING were released by some label that I cannot remember and may not have been on par with Criterion. I actually think I still may have all 3 of the these on laserdisc.....

But either way, I don't think ANY of the tranfers were abysmal by any means.

I've never seen El Cid and look forward to it. I really am looking forward to "55 Days at Peking."
