At the most, he'd have two copies of one disc, assuming he were to find that disc

He'd have to first buy a new set in order to have a receipt, since I think he said he got his original one from Amazon.

Simple math.

He has a copy of season 10... missing disc 3.

If he were to buy a copy from a store, open it... and then take out the 3rd disc. Then bring it back to the store with the receipt, they would only exchange it for the same title...

Thus, he ends up with 2 copies of season 10.

You could go to various used CD/DVD stores. A lot of them have TV/DVD sets where you can buy the individual discs.

You can check amazon.com (sometimes marketplace sellers sell individual discs) or even ebay.

If worse comes to worse, just buy a new one when there's another FOX sale on Simpsons sets. They happen often now.

YOU lost it.
YOU should buy a replacement set if you want to once again have a complete set.
YOU should NOT lie about it, or buy a second set, take out the missing disc and try to return an incomplete box.

It's not up to Fox to send you a replacement for something you lost.

Come on, people! Take ownership of your actions...

Personal accountability on this forum?!

I'm with you, but most will probably blame Circuit City or Microsoft.

What are you, nuts? This is the Age of Entitlement! Everyone is entitled to get as much as they can as often as they can while paying as little as possible, and they're exempt from whatever rules and laws may exist because they're So Special. Don't suggest otherwise, or you might damage their self-esteem.

In my experience, some stores (such as Wal*Mart) will allow an exchange without a receipt, as long as you are picking up the same title (and if it's unopened, they give you the choice of store credit as well). Therefore, depending on the store, he may not have to buy a new copy just to have a receipt to return the defected copy.

With that said, though, I not condoning it. I'm with 12th, in that he's the one that lost it, therefore, he should pay for a new copy anyway.

And maybe I understood the original suggestion, but the way I followed it is he has the set at home missing a disc. He goes to the store, buys a new set, takes that disc out, returns the set with the missing disc. They would make him get a new set, and if they are like stores I go to, they would open it up right there to "check to see if the DVDs are all inside it" (though you know they are just opening it to make sure you don't bring it back sealed and get cash back).

He'd have two season 10s.

Of course, he'd have two season tens with all discs...he could pawn one off on Ebay and cut his losses, I guess.

Ouch. Was this in reply to Smithers? Because he wasn't advocating anything shady or underhanded. He genuinely wants to get a replacement disc from Fox...he didn't say for free, or display any sense of entitlement, nor did I see any indication he wasn't willing to take ownership of his actions. He then suggested he could buy a replacement set as a last resort.

If I were you, Smithers, I'd probably just buy season 10 when it goes on sale again for twenty bucks or so. Then I'd sell off the single discs on Craigslist or something...you never know who else out there is missing a disc from their set and wants yours...and cut your losses. Even if Fox charged you for a replacement disc, I bet it would be over five bucks and then you add shipping and handling onto it...you'd probably be spending ten bucks for one DVD (if they sold them individually). Better to buy a whole new set when it's on sale for twenty bucks.

Shit happens, people lose things.

I'm willing to pay for that individual disc, how could Fox (and any company) not have a system for this?

Yea, that's what I was thinking.

Exactly. What do these studios do with sets that have defective discs in them? Throw away the good discs too? It would make sense to hang on to them to sell as replacements to fans who damage/lose a disc.

I don't know but I suppose they must throw away the good discs. I can tell you this; season sets are sold as a "unit" and replaced as a "unit". I agree it is preposterous but I'll tell you one even stranger. I purchased Deep Space Nine (the entire series) and I had one bad disc in one season set. Yep, you guessed it... they (DDD) made me return the whole damn series and they replaced it. I shit you not. Even worse, the same damn disc in the replacement set was also bad. I gave up at that point and contacted the studio for an exchange but even they swapped the entire season. Better than the entire series but still... I agree it is a waste but I suppose it is less costly for them than having to hire people to manage individual discs.
Still, that doesn't answer the issue of individual replacement discs for sets does it? As far as I am aware they do not exist. I would love to be proved wrong.

And they very well might recycle the good discs from defective sets back into complete sets to sell later on.

Or either that they just don't care. I am sure the DVD production is cheap enough and they figure in the cost of defective sets when calculating the price to charge the customer, so I guess in a way it's already been paid for when you replace the entire set.

I had an experience like you, but with a CD set. I had ordered the Bubba the Love Sponge CD set (which was packaged like a DVD box set) and one of the CDs was defective. It looked like the surface of the DVD got burned, literally. There was a brown spot on the silver part you could see from underneath. I contacted the company that put them out several times and never got a reply. All I wanted was the individual disc, or at least the CD they sold apart from the set to add to my set. Again, I never got a reply (and I tried frequently because it was a limited edition set and I was afraid they would sell out before I could replace the CD), so imagine my shock one day when a whole new set arrived on my doorstep and they never asked for the other set back.

Sorry bout my earlier post, didn't read the rules... :P

I called the Fox Home 888 number and the person who picked up seemed to have no idea about any replacement program.

I am missing disc 2 of Firefly (lent it out and it got lost). I've been casually watching ebay for the past few months - I never thought to call Fox. If a replacement is not available separately from them, I guess I'll just have to ebay the rest of the discs and purchase the set again. Of course, disc 2 has my favorite episodes...

(sorry, yet surprised no one else came up with this response yet.)

I'm seeing an opportunity for a new internet community based on pooling our incomplete (because they are missing a disc or two due to loss or damage or unplayability) DVD sets and setting up a database of haves and wants in order to eventually be able to exchange one for another.

If people do indeed end up having to rebuy an entire set just to replace one or two bad or missing discs, then they would have the other usable, but superfluous discs that would be useless to them, but prized to others who are missing just that one disc from the set. If they could get credit for sending in their unneeded discs and spent it in the form of getting someone else's unneeded discs from another set, it would seem to be mutually advantageous.

Get in on this idea now, before Ebay buys it and starts charging for the whole thing.

Why is this even a thread? You lost it, go buy another one.

It's an acceptable thread. The OP was looking to buy a replacement.

It was all the encouragement to lie and steal from a store that was my problem (which wasn't brought up by the OP).

I've lost a couple of discs by loaning them out. Still don't have aliens 3 disc from my quadrilogy. It makes me sad. Damn room mate.

wonder if that link to the fox replacement would be useful. I'll try em.

I hate to sound like a prick but I agree- you lost it, sucks for you, go buy another one. My strongest advice is being more careful. I have a pretty large DVD Collection as well & I’ve never lost a disc before, my collection might not be as large as other but still.

I know I sound like an a**hole but the truth hurts.
