Thanks for the pics of the briefcase. Can't wait for mine!

Christi P 12-18-07 12:11 AM

Post 31 in this thread has a picture of the Blade Runner set with a goldish brown cover (and no photo of Harrison Ford). Is that one region 2?

I'm interested in the standard DVD set. Does the 5 disc set in the briefcase have the same cover art as the four disc set?

Not to you. And no one is forcing you to buy it. In the big picture, $32 for a "lost" version of the film that was never intended for public release, with lots of music from other films that needed to be licensed, with additional supplements, and yes, the briefcase and all its collectibles, I don't think it's that outrageous a price, considering.

MikeShaynePI 12-18-07 12:42 AM

I'm a bit disappointed that they would just put the regular HD-DVD and Blu-Ray cases in the briefcase rather than something like what the discs in the standard case are in. I kinda wish I had purchased the standard briefcase AND the 5 disc blu-ray, instead of the blu-ray briefcase.

I just would have liked Standard DVD to have the same options as HD and Blu-Ray: a 2-disc, a reasonably priced 5-disc, and an expensive briefcase for the die-hard collectors. The lack of a standard 5-disc edition without the toys is kind of lame.

That's a complaint I understand and mostly agree with. I just don't think the price for the briefcase is unreasonable.

There will be a 5 Disc non-Briefcase SD DVD edition released. The discs have already been pressed. The Briefcase is clearly a Christmas item this year. After they get rid of them, there will be a regular 5 disc SD edition released without toys.

Some people are willing to pay an extra $30-$40 for the mysterious "5th disc" workprint disc, a plastic briefcase & some toys. The 4 disc C.E. is very nice & less than 1/2 the price. But it will eventually be phased out when they toss in the 5th disc. I doubt they'll try to sell Blade Runner Workprint Editon as a seperate disc, but anything's possible.

DJariya 12-18-07 03:46 AM

What the hell is up with all these complaints about the Briefcase? It's obviously a very niche item that appeals to hardcore fans of the movie. I'm a fan of the movie and I personally like cool niche things like this and that's why I'm buying the Briefcase and the "Limited edition" factor also appeals to me.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it....Just buy the 2 disc or 4 disc edition. Why are some of you wasting your time nit picking and trying to discourage people who are interested in it. Buy what you think is worth it to you.

alfonsosoriano 12-18-07 06:11 AM

The complaint is that the only way us standard definition users can get the fifth disc is to fork over $30+ more dollars for the case and some pictures with plastic toys as well!

Sid Ceaser 12-18-07 07:03 AM

I'll never understand collectors. First, we get upset that we don't get enough "cool" editions here in the states and get angry that other regions get all these spiffy sets with discs sitting in heads and military bags and metal tins, etc.

Now, we start getting collectors editions here, and people are getting upset that the MSRP is too high.

Fifty bucks for a 5 disc Blade Runner set that comes in a mock briefcase with a stack of goodies is totally worth it.

And seeing that I've had to pay disgusting prices in the past for other region editions of other films (my three different Amelie tins/editions can attest to that) I'm happy for fifty clams I can get a cool set.

MrShackleford 12-18-07 07:06 AM

Do they have the briefcase at Wal-Mart?

No, the complaint is that they are not offering the 5-disc set in SD without the briefcase. They are offering the HD versions 5-disc without the briefcase. A lot of people don't care about the briefcase, extras, etc... They SHOULD be able to buy the SD 5-disc release without the briefcase. It just doesn't make any sense.

For me, I love the extras like that. I bought the BD Briefcase, but for anyone who doesn't have HD and wants the workprint, they shouldn't have to pay for extras they don't want.

Consistency is the key. That is all that I ask for in releases across formats. That is why I get so pissed when they release titles in HD without porting over the extras from the SD release. Grrr....

BuckNaked2k 12-18-07 07:48 AM

FWIW, I agree with all of the folks who wanted the 5-disc set, but not all the extras.

I used to love all those fancy collectors' sets when I first got into DVD. Later on, as my collection grew, shelf space became a premium, and I divested of all my unusual packaging.

I was really pi**ed when I learned there was no 5-disc SD set in regular packaging. As I've written before, the 4-disc set just doesn't make sense.

Anyway, I recently made the jump to HD DVD, so I was able to get the 5-set in the standard red plastic case, and it arrived yesterday. To say it's amazing is an understatement. :)

Sid Ceaser 12-18-07 09:03 AM

Just got back from the Nashua NH Best Buy, and they had about seven standard dvd briefcases on the new release table. Didn't check for HD or BR versions.

I do believe it's online only. No B&M as I understand.

mike2 12-18-07 09:22 AM

Ya I called walmart and they had no idea what i was talking about when i said blade runner briefcase. It's an online deal only.

surfingelectrod 12-18-07 12:20 PM

Is anyone else having problems dealing with the foam in the briefcase? I can't get the Digipak out without messing it up. And having to take the plastic letter out whenever I want to access the discs or toys is a pain too.

The foam was kind of pushed in on mine, but i fixed it. On the letter I just folded the part that sticks in the foam, and placed it on top. I may cut that little flap off though.

Well that's what I'm doing. Of course I can't cancel my amazon order even though they haven't shipped it, so I have to refuse delivery instead. Purchased the standard case at Best Buy (Had a $5 rewards certif to take care of the tax) and placed an order for the regular blu-ray on Amazon.

These people would shit a brick if they collected laserdiscs back in the day.

129.99 for a boxset that includes a widescreen transfer, maybe a commentary and some trailers. What people today would call "bare bones".
Add inflation to the 1993 price of 129.99( not exact math). Guessing atleast 180 bucks.

Imagine if hollywood would have kept that price point for dvds/HD?
This blade runner set is a STEAL for 50 bucks.

kevkev 12-18-07 12:53 PM

its sounds sad but i'd actually like all dvds to come in huge laserdisc packaging. and i too have to laugh when i hear people moan about paying 20 pounds for a dvd.

tylergfoster 12-18-07 01:01 PM

For those wanting to buy the 5-disc set without the briefcase I would note that the Digipak included inside the briefcase has the UPC on the back. I would be far from surprised if after the limited 103000 copies of the briefcase sell out that the digipak would be released on its own.

keith71 12-18-07 01:28 PM

I was also debating whether to buy the 4 disc set or that stupid little briefcase. What settled it for me was that I won a fifty dollar American Express Gift Check at a raffle at work yesterday. So, what did you think I did with this Gift Check? Yep, you guessed it, I went to Best Buy this morning and used it on that damn briefcase. With tax, it cost me $8.29.
I just finished watching the Workprint Version(which was the only reason I wanted that briefcase to begin with). I liked it a lot. The picture quality was only average at best, but the darkness and grain just seemed to add to the mood.
For those that bought the briefcase, did it come with a signed letter from Ridley Scott and a little drawing from Scott? Mine didn't, and I could have sworn it was supposed to come with these two things.
All in all, I imagine I will be spending WEEKS going through all the extras in this bad boy. Truly overwhelming.

If they had, then the format would not have caught on with casual consumers. And in that case, we may not have gotten a 'Final Cut' at all.

But I agree with your point. There was a time when a VHS copy of Blade Runner could've set you back $95!

coltcannon 12-18-07 02:27 PM

Got a friend who is waiting till after xmas for the dvd briefcase, who will buy my amazon order when it finally gets here. I did instore pickup at BB this morning, picked it up at lunch. They pulled the 4disc set and took more than a minute so I made $10. DVD Blade Runner Ultimate cost to me $45
