I remember going to see Close Encounters in the theatres in 1977 with my father and we were both completely blown away with this movie. We must have went to see it close to 10 times at the movies, of course I am in for ANYTHING new with the movie. One of the best of all time.

Where did you hear this? I'd buy this several times to get all the extras, but I haven't heard anything yet.

I think one of the new extras is a trivia track, so we'll miss out on that anyway (if we go with the SD).

Dvd times is reporting that the R2 sd dvd release will have all the bluray extra features. http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=66253

This was out early at the Fair Oaks BB today. Didn't buy it yet, waiting to see if someone gets an exclusive.

RD1973 11-13-07 01:35 AM

Can anyone confirm what's on the R1 Bluray that's not on the R1 DVD? So far, it looks like its just the trivia track and the photo/artwork galleries.

I hope he replaces all of the guns with walkie-talkies. ;)

JLBkret 11-13-07 09:36 AM

FYI Walmart has the soundtrack cd as a bonus with the Ultimate Edition. The Walmart I went to today had the set for $29.96 with the bonus cd.

Giles 11-13-07 09:52 AM

I hate you Walmart - if I were buying the standard DVD of the film I'd bite, but for the Bluray, Amazon's my route.

10x better box art work.
Does that count?

wm lopez 11-13-07 03:02 PM

How's the transfer?
Did they do away with that brownish look the last dvd & laserdisc had?
Or did it have the blueish tint the Critirion laserdisc had.

OldBoy 11-13-07 04:41 PM

does anyone have a definitive list of what is and isn't on the various movie discs? basically, the differences in cuts?
which is the best cut also?

So it is official that Cameron's information was faulty (with no offense intended)? I see no indication of the Blu-Ray's trivia track or any other bonus being made available on the SD release anywhere--is this correct? The SD CE3K is the same version everywhere?

The DVD came with a timeline foldout that shows you the different scenes between the 3 versions. Its pretty neat. The quality is pretty good so far. Watched the SE and DC so far. DTS is awesome!

lamphorn 11-13-07 06:50 PM

Best Buy was advertising this as being 24.99 on their website, but I went today and it's 34.99.

Seeing as the special features are minimal, I'm going to stick with my copy of the Director's Cut till I figure out which HD format to go with (which will be a long time from now).

Doh! I went to three Wal-Marts today and forgot to look for this.

It wasn't out with the new releases, probably buried in with older titles if they even had it.

Also, has it been confirmed that no other retailer got a bonus disc for this? I can affirm that there is nothing at BB, but didn't see it at CC or Target.

I only saw the BR and SD by themselves at CC and BB, and neither at Target and Walmart.

Any bonus with it at CC?

No, but the packaging itself was in better condition there.

I can only speak for locations in Waterford Lakes in Orlando but at my Best Buy they crammed the SD into those new release shelves damaging each side, so I had to have them bring one from the back.

cardaway 11-14-07 09:13 AM

Are reviews posted anywhere? How about just the full specs and extras? Seems to be a lot of confusion over what was included.

That's what I'm waiting to see. I haven't found a review yet...

I'm mainly wondering if I can dump my existing 2-discer. Are all of the extras carried over?

jmj713 11-14-07 09:33 AM

The best price is obviously at DD 20% off.

Actually, it's about a buck cheaper at DVDPlanet, which also has a 20% off coupon.
