Close Encounters of the Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition 11-13-07

"the first home video release of all three versions of the film: the 1977 original theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical special edition and Spielberg's director's cut, released in 1998."

Looks like a 3 DVD disc set? Also will be on Blu-ray.

nateman 07-26-07 07:02 AM

Excellent news
I don't even have this movie on DVD yet. I have this movie on VHS for christ-sake, & it's nice to finally see a good DVD release for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This is very much like the E.T. DVD release that had the original theatrical version & the re-mastered one. That was a very good set & hopefully this will be just as good.

AGuyNamedMike 07-26-07 07:25 AM

Yeah! I'm still sweatin' the special edition on VHS. Between this and Blade Runner, I reckon it's time to get a Blu-ray player.

Zen Peckinpah 07-26-07 07:42 AM

Are more Spielberg HD movies a possibility? I think so, with this being the first and not Always (like with SD).

Bleddyn Williams 07-26-07 07:46 AM

As regards a blu-ray edition - can this be for real? Spielberg held off DVD for a very long time to let player numbers in homes reach a level he deemed worthwhile before releasing any of his titles. This seems way too early for him to enter the HD game...

Geofferson 07-26-07 07:49 AM

Hopefully a commentary this time. ;)

alfonsosoriano 07-26-07 08:26 AM

Sweet, I don't own either previous copies, so I'll get this one. I loved the film.

Giles 07-26-07 08:51 AM

yeah but what are the extras ?? - the SE DVD has a great feature length documentary and deleted scenes (that Columbia didn't grant permission for Criterion to include on it's laserdisc release).

milo bloom 07-26-07 10:44 AM

I'm going to have to sell internal organs this fall to pay for this and the BladeRunner suitcase. Maybe we can get this one packaged with a box of instant mashed potatos?

tofferman 07-26-07 10:50 AM

I'll gladly double dip on this release, and it's become very compelling to acquire a BD player now. Great news!

Cameron 07-26-07 11:04 AM

now cmon universal with the HD jaws...

Egon's Ghost 07-26-07 11:57 AM

the original cinema cut, too? Holy crap.

30 friggin' years? Double holy crap.

islandclaws 07-26-07 12:02 PM

I don't think I'll upgrade on this one. Unless they announce some ultra-cool features I'm fine with the original 2-disc set. It's got just about everything I need.

That's the best news of all of this...Sony releases CE3K and Universal responds with an "Oh yeah? Here's JAWS!" A win-win for multi-format owners like myself. ;)

ReduxGuy 07-26-07 12:28 PM

*keeps fingers crossed the DTS track remains*

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

Except for the best version of the film! ;)

Dane Marvin 07-26-07 01:10 PM

Something told me to pull the old 2-disc version off my DVDSpot wishlist and I almost picked it up a couple times recently through Columbia House. This is awesome news!

It's not all that different. Not different enought to justify a double dip, IMHO.

MTRodaba2468 07-26-07 01:42 PM

I just mentioned in another topic that I already have the 2-Disc edition that's out, but I'd upgrade if this featured the different versions of the film, so my plans are confirmed.

The only thing I'm wondering is if I should hang on to the 2-Disc, because the documentary on the 2nd disc is quite good. Unless the new set carries over the extras from the 2-Disc set, I might want to hold onto it...

ericmylad 07-26-07 03:07 PM

Here is some early info about the extras for both releases. Seems like there will be more on there than what's listed though.

Matthew Chmiel 07-26-07 03:51 PM

I'll upgrade if the new set retains the DTS.

However, it's a shame that the Blu-ray release will have more extras. Fucking Sony.

I will be getting this since the 1977 version is the best version of them all in my opinion! A set like this is what I have been dreaming would be released, and I can't wait!

I hated the 1980 version - how does the '77 version differ from the '98 one?
