I Spy (TV) Box Sets
Please forgive me if I've placed this in the wrong forum (mods, please move this, if necessary). I have a question about the I Spy TV series box set DVDs. Apparently the shows on the DVDs aren't in any particular order. Here's an extract of a review on Amazon of one box set:
My question:
I appreciate the reference to "I Spy: A History and Episode Guide to the Groundbreaking Series," which looks interesting but expensive. I understand that the episode "Affair in T'Sien Cha" was to be the pilot, but was instead shown midway through the first season. Outside of watching that episode first, wouldn't the original air dates be the "proper order" for viewing?
Read "I Spy: A History and Episode Guide to the Groundbreaking Series" ... then watch these episodes in a whole new light.
For the three box sets from Image, the DVD transfers are very good; the Robert Culp commentaries are well worth hearing; and you can use the above mentioned book as a guide to the proper order that the episodes were intended to be viewed - which will enhance the viewing experience.

I have the idividual discs instead of the box sets they are pretty much in broadcast order except for the ones they skipped to put on the last two discs(these are the ones written and/or directed by Culp with commentary). There is no ongoing story arcs. Each ep. is standalone. There is a character played by Kenneth Tobey who shows up more than once but those are in order. The pilot isn't introductory in any way and you can't tell it from any other episode. The original airdate for each ep. is on the cover of the singles, sets may have it to. I'd just print out an episode guide from epguides.com or someplace and use that if you want to watch them in exact broadcast order.
The show was shot on location(Hong Kong, Greece, Mexico, etc.). In order to afford this they had an entire season's scripts written before any filming began. They would go on location and shoot the exteriors for the entire season and come back to studio and shoot the interiors. When you watch it you will notice they are in Hong Kong for several episodes in a row and then switch local for several more in another country. It's a great show with very high production values. Almost like watching a feature film. Enjoy!!

Oh, I remember the show well. One of my all-time faves. The Amazon reviews said something about the shows not being in order, and then the review I quoted mentions the book and "proper order"; I was just wondering if there was anything to that. Thanks for your reply (and I'll check out epguides.com).
