Star Trek: The Next Generation - Complete Series
(Combination of TVSODVD and Amazon)
CBS/Paramount's new Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Complete Series DVD release is on-the-way for an October 2nd release, and can be pre-ordered from Amazon at a current discounted price of $395.09 (which is a notably higher pre-order cost than it was at Amazon a month ago). It will contain all 7 seasons of the show, plus a new bonus disc with new extras produced just for this release.

Looks like it'll take up less space than the seven season box sets, so that's a plus.
Of course, I saw several of the season sets at Sams for $47, which makes the complete series $329.
Once this hits the DDD 20% off sale, it'll be pretty tempting.

That will be years from now. The masters for TNG and DS9 and Voyager only exist on SD video. They were all completed on NTSC video. Even the compositing of effects shots was done on video at 480i SD resolution.
Every foot of film for 24 episodes of each of the 7 seasons would have to be re scanned and re edited from scratch. Even with the effects shots, each element would have to be re scanned and re composited. Add to that not all of the effects shots were models shot on film. Things like the phasers, transporters, light creatures, etc were all done in a computer at NTSC resolution, so all of those things would have to be completely re created from scratch.
This means going back and finding the editing logs, if they still exist, and trying to figure out which takes were used for which shots. (sometimes they will use part of take one and part of take 6 for example)
Thats a LOT of work and a TON of money. Not saying it can't happen but it will take YEARS. It's taking CBSDigital 2 years to do the new CGI FX for just 3 seasons of Trek:TOS. For seven seasons of TNG with many more FX shots per episode....?

I also might be interested if it drops in price or via DDD's sale, since I haven't already purchased, as the price now is not all that much of a savings seeing as how you could buy any/all seasons for around $50.

I'd be interested in it if they ever put the SD-DVD transfers on higher capacity HD/BR discs... I'm not interested in the HD picture quality, but simply reducing the number of discs.

I'm a bit 'meh' about this release, but the space savings and bonus disc are plusses.
If I find it for a great price, I'll bite (and then finance it by selling off my existing sets). But I'm not in any hurry.

I like the look of the set, but the price is just too high for me. I've only watched a handful of episodes, and liked every one, yet the cost is a hurdle.

I mortgaged a small house to get all seven of the original releases on DVD.
Any idea what the going rate is for used season sets? Will I have some money left over if I sell the seven and get this?

It looks *much* better for accessing discs than the first time around. Too bad I already own the first set. Good for newcomers who want it (though I'd probably be waiting for a price drop as well).

Whew, pretty but pricey. Hell I just got season 3 of Original Star Trek for $25

People on amazon are saying in the reviews that this set has quite a few problems. Especially they are unhappy with the packaging. Has anyone any opinions on it? Especially with the deal at bn.com
