Having a link to your collection in your signature
This is just something I've been curious about. I think I added a link to my collection in my signature around the time I started trading with other members in the exchange forum. It made it easy to see what I had and link others to my "wishlist", etc.
I've noticed a lot of members have this and a lot don't. I was wondering about the reasoning/motivation for some to include it and some to choose not to? Not that there has to be one, or that one even has to have an online catalog of their dvds in ther first place. I am not sure I would have ever have done it, if not for the trading aspect. Still, I do enjoy checking out others collections, getting ideas from members with like interests and occasionally, having my eyes opened to some titles I may not have looked into otherwise.
Thoughts?

I have it to show my tastes in movies in case someone thinks I am an uptight movie snob. I enjoyed the Godzilla remake and Lost In Space. I enjoy some awful movies as well as TV shows that barely lasted a single season.

I'd never bothered with a signature before now, but after reading your thread I went ahead and stuck it in there. Nobody at this forum will really gain anything from looking at my collection since it's pretty small, but at the other forum dedicated to movies I post at I've always had it in my signature. I guess just to give people an idea of what I'm like. And at the other forum I'm at, "Rate My Collection & Recommend" threads are pretty common, too.
I dunno, it's something I'm fairly proud of (it's a pretty impressive collection for myself being only a 19-year-old college student who has only been buying DVDs for 13 months) so I do like to display it. I think most people feel the same, that they take pride in it.

I don't because I doubt that DVD Talkers look much at the collections in other people's siglines. I send the link to friends who might want to borrow movies.

I like having a quick link to my collection for viewing and updating. If anyone takes the time to look through my collection, that is great too. Maybe they will see a movie they missed or forgot about.
I occasionally look through other collections in the signatures to see how people organize their collection and see if others have similar tastes.

I put the links in my sig so I don't have to remember them if I'm on someone else's computer.
I used to have the worst time linking to DVD Aficionado (or however the hell you spell it--see I still don't know).
When I first put them on, I had under 100 DVDs so it definitely wasn't to show off on this site.

I do it to prove I'm better than anyone else.
Seriously, I check other peoples collections if they post something I like or agree with (that's how I found out Giggles and I have almost the exact same tastes and collections), or to check out titles I may not have heard of from posters I respect (like TomOpus), or to laugh at what stupid people waste their money one (name withheld).
I may never have had my collection online if I didn't pay my daughter to type them all into DVDSpot (which is why I have to suffer with 2 Fast 2 Furious and other pieces of crap being displayed).

I actually do check out other people's collections from time to time. In turn, I like to offer the same option.

No, most programs/sites require member login to edit a list. You're sharing read-only access, actually, it's not even 'read only access', it's just a link to a semistatic webpage. Of course, if they guess or know your username/pw, all bets are off.
All of the above: easy way to check my own inventory, or support a tradelist, and I know some people are curious and like to check out other peoples lists (as do I). And because (most) everyone else does it too

Oaky, just for giggles I tried to move the OPs "400 Blows" dvd to another category and it says that I did in the link he provided in his signature. I moved it to his "owned/comedy" category. Was that a real move or just something I can see? The reason I ask this is that I put alot of time into my list and I would hate to link it to my signature and then have someone move all of my movies around and/or add and delete movie. To me it looks like that is a possibility right now. But maybe the OPs link is not set up like it should be?

Nope it's not in owned comedy for him (it's just owned), but if you have a collection and were logged in, it moved it to your owned comedy (I just tried the same thing with Aeon Flux which is now listed under my owned-animated).
When I'm not logged in, the move and other options don't show up, so even though it is the OPs collection showing up, it's my collection that's effected.

I have it so I can quickly check my collection. Comes in handy when there is something posted in the bargain forum I'm interested in.
Sometimes I forget if I ever picked something up or not.

I put a link to my collection in my signature partly because I didn't want all the hours it took typing out those UPC's for DVDSpot to go to waste. I'm also proud of my collection and I like being able to show it off to others on top of having a quick link in case I'm at work or on another computer.

I used to have one, but got tired of updating it. One of these days, I'll get back to it.

I just joined the HD world so I figured it was a good time to start fresh with a new DVD organizer, I rarely updated all of my standard DVDs, so now I plan on staying up do date with a fresh start. So now you all can see my massive new HD collection, which hopefully will be rapidly growing.

It's a great pre-dating screener.
