Bravo airs commercials, unfortunately. I'm not sure that there was ever a version of this released in widescreen. IIRC, even the laserdisc is in fullscreen.

Actually:

http://www.dvdlaser.com/search/detail.cfm?id=24748

and for those who don't want to read all of that...

"To set the record straight, the Godfather films were shot at 1.66:1 with the intention of having them projected at 1:85:1 by masking the top and bottom of the image. Die-hard fans are dissatisfied with the standard 1:33:1 full screen presentation the films, but it was at the insistance of Coppola that it be presented this way and we have never been able to pin down a specific shot or a specific scene where the framing interfered with the his concepts."

cheers,

i had thought that this may had been what was holding it up...since it was full frame for tv and every other release, no WS element of this cut was available. perhaps putting it all together.

and while the above article is interesting, I would think that paramount would want to capitalize on the future of WS televison and HD content for both broadcast and hard copy formats.

perhaps the televison airings will get people talking again about this cut and get things moving

Anyone know, which version of the trilogy was included in the VHS Gift Set that also contained the Coppola autograph?

EDIT: never mind I found a listing for it on Amazon and it appears to be the 25th Anniversary Widescreen VHS, not the "Saga"

It's never happening. I don't even think it's on Zoetrope's radar.

Its too bad! I had the VHS copy of this way back when and loved the re-editing into the chronological order of the story. I too can only hope that Coppola will one day release this on DVD!

You know, I'm reminded of the blurb that I read on the laserdisc jacket of the extended version of Dances with Wolves. I'm going from memory here, but basically Costner says that after DWW became a success, the studio was kinda looking for a sequel or something to cash in on the property. They settled instead on the home video release of extended cut.

Seems to me this situation could apply here. Instead of re-selling the same three movies over and over again, why not take the opportunity of having all that newly restored footage, gathering up all the deleted scenes, and making the ultimate chronological cut (with no TV censoring)?
